Can't. They'd have to enter sovereign territory of the Russian Federation, and that'd be illegal. Unless you're willing to issue a legally binding permission in writing.

What have Ukraine to do with anything? This is Russian internal affair.

Their inaction makes them a passive supporter of this terrorist spread. Maybe America will think twice before arming Ukraine.

I think we’re seeing act 1 of the counteroffensive. This will distract a lot of Russian troops and demoralize the general population even more. A front will likely be opened up in the next 48 hours

      Anonymous

      >moronic
You're the moron here. Russia will be forced to use as much force as possible to solve this problem and make the border impassable in the region. Which is only possible with some serious reserves allocation to protecting Belgorod. Reserves that don't exist, meaning troops who are supposed to hold the line in Donbass or Zaporizhya will be forced to leave their positions. By allocating minimal resources Ukraine is creating a hole in the front it can use for the counteroffensive.

      Anonymous

      >implying that's not what they're doing
Russia can only prevent incursions like this by reinforcing their own turf, and every bit of manpower or materiel used for that is one less holding the line in Ukraine

        Anonymous

yeah normal cops don't have a chance once you start using artillery, drones or aviation
they can deal with small groups of sof if they only have small arms, an infantry platoon will be a serious problem and once you get past infantry company size you need a 3:1 advantage with rifles to hold ground
infantry battalion and up, or anything above a mechanized/tank platoon and you're completely helpless to do anything without calling in your own artillery or army

Good. I have an excuse to repost this:

Hold onto your babushkas, folks, because today's weather forecast is as unpredictable as a Kremlin press release. We've traded in our usual cats and dogs for something a little more… avian. In a meteorological twist that has even our seasoned weather balloons quaking, today's forecast is calling for a 100% chance of Russian helicopter showers.

No, you didn't mishear me. Today's precipitation won't be the usual drizzly disappointment or even the occasionally exciting golf-ball-sized hail. Today, we've upped the ante - it’s Russian helicopters. So, grab your umbrella, your Kevlar vest, and, just to be safe, maybe a crash helmet.

We're expecting the helicopter shower to start around the same time as the morning rush hour because, let's face it, the commute wasn't Kafkaesque enough already. Visibility will be low, mostly due to the unexpected rotor blades whipping up a frenzy, so drivers are advised to keep their wipers on high and their eyes on the sky.

The storm should reach peak intensity around lunchtime, right when you've decided to risk it all for that falafel wrap from the food truck down the street. We recommend you seek shelter, perhaps in a deep, sturdy bunker. Remember: delivery exists for a reason, and today, that reason is falling Russian helicopters.

By the afternoon, conditions should improve somewhat. Instead of a torrent of helicopters, we're expecting a light drizzle of debris – nothing to worry about, really, just the odd rotor blade or fuselage fragment. If you’re lucky, you might even find a souvenir for the kids.

Now, for those of you with outdoor plans, let me be clear: you're braver than I am, and probably a little unhinged. But don't let the Russian helicopter forecast completely rain on your parade. After all, it’s not every day you get to tell your friends you survived a Helicopter Hurly-burly.

What if - hear me out - what if the West is actually at a point where they want to give Russia a taste of their own medicine?
Sure, no Western weapons may be used to strike Russian territory. And I am pretty certain Ukraine will stand by that.
But this attack is carried out only by Russians. And say, a sort of Peoples Republic of Belgorod were to be declared - that would not be Russian territory anymore, right?

  51. 10 months ago

This is fricking dumb. It does not help Ukraine's situation at all, it just means if Monke wants to declare full mobilization or some other drastic shit, he can genuinely claim Russia is being attacked and this is a defensive war.

      Anonymous

They’ve already done and claimed that? Kherson was officially incorporated into Russia and another uncrossable red line was declared. Then nothing happened

      Anonymous

He can already do that. Donbabwe, Luganda, Zaporizia and Kherson are all part of the Russian Federation, and parts of these oblasts are illegally occupied by the NATO lackey Banderite Kiev junta

      Anonymous

First of all, it does benefit Ukraine strategically, read

      I'm assuming the latter
      >make a ton of noise to spook Russia
      >leave before any meaningful response can be made
      >Russian government now has to choose between diverting resources from the front to reinforce border regions, or losing face by doing nothing/allowing it to happen again

Secondly, who gives a frick if they conscript 1 million more mobiks, they are not transformes who can convert themselves to tanks or aircraft. Russia still lacks the offensive capacity in the field, and that's not going to change even if you have more poorly trained infantry.

I assume it's just a slavic thing. And in this case I assume the colors were chosen to depict all of Russia as one entity, to make them feel like the USSR, and to make Ukraine look like they're personally invading Russia. And to call them nazis probably.

pull units from the line and pray the Ukrainians don't attack (which presumable is the entire point of the raid in the first place), use the reserves the Russians should have if they're competent (lol?) or scramble whatever part of those remaining 10% just to scare away the raiders.

Today is a good day. Pro-Ukrainian Russian militias are going hog wild on Russian lands that turn out to be remarkably void of Russian Army forces. They are probably not many enough to hold the area in question, but in terms of absolute ruckus they should get a lot of bang for the buck.

why chose this axis? Either it's a distraction or the defense must have been particularly weak just there. Seems odd though, far from major Ukrainian towns (and probably equally stretched supply lines if they intend to hold those towns). The other possibility is a Belgorod thunder run, but in that case they chose a long way round

Why is it a suicide mission? They aren't that deep into Russian territory. Ukraine likely has Artillery and support available to cover them. In fact, it could be a trap the other way. Bury some mines. Booby trap some houses. Have "on-call" artillery available to hit Russian armoured vehicles when they counter-attack.

From the air, they are supported by reconnaissance drones of quadrocopter and aircraft type, which provide objective control.
            >At the moment, measures are underway to block and destroy the enemy with the use of artillery and aviation.

They're not that far from the border and so far it seems like they've little to no opposition to stop them from just turning around and leaving whenever they want.
I doubt they have any intention of actually holding the ground; if they even just spook the Russian military into diverting resources from the frontline then it's a significant strategic gain regardless.

For those asking about the strategic significance:

    1. Help Russian war effort? Unlikely. Russians already support the war to the extent it matters. Russia needs shells and tanks, neither are influence by war support. Further, the raids undermine the Kremlin's narrative. "why is Ukraine taking towns in Russia, why can we not stop this".

    2. Russia has very little more it can do, short of nukes, to escalate. They have committed every war crime imaginable. They have pushed every resource to the front. They can mobilize more troops, but they will do that eventually anyway. Russia is likely just going to have to sit here and take this.

    3. Psychological pressure. Ukraine is almost certainly going to attack towards Melitopol. They can't hide it and it will be extremely difficult to get Russia to move troops away from where they want to attack. Disguising troop movements will only do so much. That is why this attack is clever, they're putting Russia into a strategic dilemma. 1. Defend the whole line from raids which will take huge numbers of troops and equipment 2. Allow "Free Russians" to take Russian territory (which helps them defend Ukraine from shelling) and massacre small groups of Russian soldiers. Neither option is good and both benefit Ukraine. The cost of such a defense is asymmetric, a small group of "Free Russian" soldiers can attack anywhere, which means you have to defend everywhere properly, which takes a lot of manpower. In Naval terms the concept is known as "Fleet in Being"

    3. This isn't the only place Ukraine is applying psychological pressure. They're doing it in Bakhmut too. Attacking the flanks and trying to encircle it. Given the costs Russia paid to take Bakhmut neither option Ukraine is presenting is good: 1. To defend the flanks they need more troops which can only come from areas Ukraine wants to attack. 2. Losing the city after such a long campaign would be a huge blow to public morale. Both benefit Ukraine.
