I keep forgetting. Why did they throw all their men at these two settlements? They retreated from Kharkiv and Kherson to throw more men at Bakhmut.
    Why was this happening again?

Prigozhin has been attacking Bakhmut for close to an year.
For all his bravado, he has not a single win to show.
Recently, he finally admitted he cannot take Bakhmut - after a limited counter-attack pushed his forces out of any progress they had made for the past two seasons.
So he attempted to push past the city by taking Soledar.
      And failed, repeatedly.
Finally, after much screaming from Prigozhin, Putin intervened on behalf of his attack poodle and ordered Shoigu to help him.
The regular army went in hard and pushed into the southern half of Soledar, suffering heavy casualties.
That's when Prigozhin started spamming about having taken Soledar and doing so only with Wagner units.
Because the truth is, he has been exposed as weak and in his world, weak people get disposed of - or even worse, kept as wiener slaves.

He's not an imaginative leader. He uses the top-down hierarchy system, throws lots of men at problems, and wastes a ton of ammo just to advance. Typical Vatnik.

yes, but salt mines are very stable. You can't bomb them even with bunker buster bombs. Salt mines are perfect ammo dumps. Since Eastern Ukraine is a flat steppe without forests is such ammo depot a enormous strategic advantage.

They might be trying to tie up Ukie resources to prevent them disrupting Russian lines elsewhere as they rebuild their conventional forces. Russia is for the most part culling it's prison population. Until recently not utilising what remains of its decent formations. it makes Wagner complaints about lack of support from the army start to make more sense beyond inter factional rivalry.

Regular army/VDV/Naval infantry is stepping in now as it sees an opportunity to get a long awaited victory now that the penal battalions have worn down Ukie position.

It's basically a more morbid version of a PR stunt. See how much media attention is on Bakhmut ,the only place where Russia keeps seriously attacking and advancing (if only by an increment of metres) instead of all of the other places where Russia has switched to defensive posture and is constructing fortifications afraid that Ukraine will be able to smash their lines again? Bakhmut is nothing more, but a great distraction from the fact that Russia has lost fate in being able to defeat Ukraine.
Oh, and that narrative that the goal of the Bakhmut operation is to bleed Ukrainian army dry? Curious how various shills only adapted it months into the battle, as if they were trying to retroactively justify why it was taking so long

Bait or are you genuinely moronic? It is mathematically impossible for Ukraine to suffer such casualties in Bakhmut alone.
In fact, Sergei fricking Shoigu himself said in late September that Ukraine has suffered 60k dead and 50k wounded and Bakhmut was already in full swing by that time. So are you saying Ukrainian losses have more than doubled since then in Bakhmut alone or is the Russian minister of defense a NATO shill now?

Its a logistics hub and would, theoretically, allow for further advanced into Donetsk, but seeing how they are struggling there I can't even imagine how long it would take to conquer a major city

Funnily enough it was considered essential for attacking Slaviansk/Kramatorsk through the M03 from Izyum and Bakhmut, they lost Izyum and i think it has become some weird sunk cost thing. It has absolutely no strategic value outside of being a above average sized settlement.

They need propaganda victory with many casualties, a tradition I would say
      >Soledar
It's a step into closing Bakhmut in pocket, YET it's capture for Russians and loss for Ukrainians means nothing really, It would get troublesome if Russians would capture city next to it Krasna Gora. Even lose of Soledar is marginal victory due to the fact that Ukrainians have now river on their side and high ground.

additionally even if RU would capture Bakhmut they still have 3 larger or similar in size cities to capture after it, and I guess at least that UKR already prepared those positions with mines and defence structures.

Because /chug/ can't simp for anything other than the worst losers, and the Russian regulars actually had some success around Soledar when they swung around to show Prigozhin's pederasts how it's done.
