it's extremely common to just wear one on the side you kneel/stop falls with. kneepads are not comfortable over long periods of time, especially not if it's hot or you need to run a lot. watch out for guys globally wearing just one or the other at the ankle.

When you are shooting from the left shoulder and kneeling on your left knee during CQB, I wore pads on both sides. If not, the concrete would seriously frick you up.
When you are out in the open I wore only on my right because I would not have to switch shoulders. My MAIN reason was that it interfered with shooting from the kneeling supported firing position(where the elbows/tricep meets the knee). Which is by far one of the most common ones.
