Was it confirmed to be a Ka-52? I heard it was but I also heard it was an Mi-26.

If a full Mi-26 was shot down the vatshill posting on /k/ would be insane. Which to be fair, it has been...

Yesterday's helicopter shootdown. It was initially reported as an MI series helicopter, but it was admitted by Russia to have been a critically endangered KA-52 model.

Russia is going to have to start a breeding program or they're going to go extinct.

Last I checked (probably six months ago), it had been independently verified that at least a quarter of all the Ka-52s ever built had been destroyed

Endangered species. There were about 98-120 at the start of this, and 40-50 have confirmed shot down. Add in the ones damaged beyond repair, lack of pilots, russian maintenance and there's a last male gator singing a mating song to no one somewhere.

There will always be a role for them. When pike and shot gave infantry a hard counter to calvary charges it didn't end calvary, it simply meant they had to be used strategically at times of advantage. Same shit here.

You can't just fly in to destroy the enemy like before, but you can move in to rape an enemy that is outrunning its defense umbrella or one that has had its umbrella and AA degraded.

You'll just use them with more disposable drones and use them more sparingly. Small spotter drones, possibly fired overhead by artillery, MLRS, or even rotary wing rockets, will feed back the locations of AA systems, which then get hit by by precision guided artillery or more rotary wing. Once AA is degraded, then the rotary wing can move in, with pilots in them using drone wing men for more exposed support.

Throw some laser interceptors on choppers and some last ditch EFP AP and they can become more robust too. That will take longer because the tech will need to shrink and new powerplants will need to be installed, but we're already seeing it for ground systems and fighters.

When you can take out AA at a distance with drone spotters/sensors + stand off weapons and neutralized MANPADs, you can still use attack choppers effectively.
