      >I am assuming when it translated to "maize" russanon is referring to crop dusting aircraft.
WW2's Polikarpov Po-2 had the nickname Кyкypyзник (Kukuruznik), from the Russian word kukuruza meaning maize/corn.
The same nickname was adapted later to Antonov An-2.
Both of these planes were adapted to serve the role of crop dusting aircraft.

Most accurate translation of Kukuruznik would be something like Maizer or Corner (morphology analogous to fish -> fisher which in russian would be ryba -> rybak).

But yeah, google translate translates kukuruznik as maize.

Modern electronics and munitions would still be expensive, modern air defense are even more capable against these, and a slow low flying prop plane is an easy target for javelins and stingers. Not to mention, the tooling and expertise to make these are probably not extant in Russia today and would require at least a year to even begin manufacture. So no, stupid idea. Also Gepards would eat these alive.

If we're talking costs then we're talking stupid plans that won't work, if Hinds get wrecked so will these IL-2 modernizations, any modern GTA system from even the cold war invalidates WW2 planes hence why no modern military considers them for near peer.

My idea to send stealth shaped spitfires doesn't sound so silly now does it.

Is there any reason why a stealthed up prop wouldn't work? (Other than not being fast, I mean by geometrically).

              Anonymous

Mostly it's an issue cause it's made of wood not composite, and the propeller is on the front.
If it wasn't for the propeller (Let us hypothetically pretend they do not frick with stealth) they absolutely would work if you had it angled right, though general engine efficiency has increased significantly since the griffon engine so you'd probably be able to fit a smaller engine for the same HP, or a much beefier engine to make up for the loss of aerodynamics.

So make it out of composite, it'd be stronger even, angle it properly and you can make anything have a smaller radar footprint.

Yea right, I'm think a low observability heavyweight stealth prop would be great for cas/recon cheap and feul efficient aswell.

I wouldn't call them viable, but they're pretty fun to theorise, and considering how cheap they can be they make cost effective drones for now too, though I imagine small jet engines might start getting cheap af with 3d metal printing so I don't see it staying viable forever.
And if we can crack miniaturised rotation detonation for light UCAVs, man that ISP would be baller.

I hate this argument. Planes were still expensive as frick back in WW2 and pilot training still took a long time too (if you wanted them to survive more than a week anyway). Its like giving a Sopwith camel to a pilot with 2 weeks training and sending him into the battle of Britain just because it's cheaper than a spitfire.

There are two airworthy IL2's in Russia, and 9 (including later variants) in display in museums in Russia. One display model in Serbia.
The UK has two (One flight worthy), and the US has 3 (One flightworthy)
An La-5 wreck is in storage at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, Virginia, there are no other variants that I know of.

The UK and the USA could Lendlease the Ukrainians just as many as the Russians could field.

I seriously doubt the numbers are that low. That's just the ones noteworthy enough to bother listing somewhere.

Unlike the U.S., the Soviets didn't destroy perfectly good airframes after WW2 just to protect their MIC and civilian aircraft manufacturers from the huge overhang of surplus.

I think his discount Bayraktar's $100,000 cost estimate goes out the window when you cram in those modern electronics which Russia doesn't seem to have. Also if they had guided munitions to arm them those expensive Sukhoi's wouldn't be using dumb bombs.
A low cost aircraft like this wouldn't be a terrible idea if they could build it but it's not going to happen near as fast or as cheap as he thinks and using old WW2 fighter hulls is moronic.

      Anonymous

      > goes out the window when you cram in those modern electronics which Russia doesn't seem to have.
Also, the engines. As far as I’m aware, there’s not a single company that makes 1500+ horsepower piston aircraft engines from scratch. And if they do, it’s certainly not in quantities sufficient for military use. So you’d have to use a turboprop. In essence, you just made a Russian version of the Suoer
Tucano. Except it would cost more than the Tucano, because it’s not being powered by the small-block Chevy equivalent of the aircraft engine world

I think people over estimate AA's ability to clear the skies, both sides are making extensive use of Su-25's and attack helicopters 7 months into this war. Would these aircraft take casualties, over time yes but they would fly a lot of sorties before hand.
Of course actual WW2 fighters would be borderline useless as would a CAS aircraft without pgm's. I don't think Russia doesn't have the technology or capacity to quickly make a Super Tucano type aircraft and certainly not in the numbers needed.
They'd be better off putting that money into getting the air force they have left to work as it is supposed to, producing pgm's and trying to refurb aircraft in storage.

If only Russia still had lots of cheap ww2 era prop-planes this wouldn’t be a horrible idea.
I mean, they’re currently using helicopters with precision long range FLIR for pitching up and firing unguided rockets without even seeing the target and 50 million dollar planes with dumb bombs and rockets.
You’d be a whole lot more effective with just a basic prop-plane and rocket pods. Also way easier to evade missiles.
    Tell me why I’m wrong

Propeller aircraft are not only extremely visible on radar but are very distinct. They wouldn’t be resistant to missiles at all and would be far more vulnerable to cannon SPAA which would shred them if used in any real capacity.

Stingers don't cost $200,000. Also all the Stingers Ukraine is getting were paid for in like 1978.

With this Russians moronic idea, we have an alternate reality where the greatest hits of WW2 are used in tandem with thermals. Prop dogfighting is back on the menu, a la Korea 2.0. the last age of the prop fighter will be in Ukraine.

moron here. Wouldn't a whole bunch of WW2 style fighters with MGs, operating outside Russia's AA envelope, be a cheaper viable defence against larger UAVs like the Iranian suicide drones?

I don't really see how it would be?
Getting some dude to fly takes more shit than just stuffing a drone controller inside a similar plane. That's without mentioning that the training and maintaining that same dude is additional constant cost.

I could see an argument for it if your country is such a shithole that it can't produce drone stuff so shoving a conscript inside a toy plane is the only option, but seriously, even africans can make drones.

Realistically, how hard and expensive would it be to put a remote piloting system into these old as frick aircraft?
    >motorized stick and throttle controls
    >remote weapons release
    >gauges converted to digital display
    >one camera for flight, one for aiming
You manage one good hit with a bomb and it has massively returned on investment, granted the RC system cost less than $100K to implement.

      >be to put a remote piloting system
Depending on quality and producer can go from couple hundred bucks to millions
      >into these old as frick aircraft
Well, that's tricker, but mostly because finding any of those in flying condition outside a museum would be a miracle in and itself. And if you are starting reproduction why not make it into an actual drone chassis while you are at it?

        >just build a drone lmao
This is the obvious choice, but I have doubts Russia would be able to build acceptable drones from the ground-up at this point, where you could Black person rig some remote flight controls with significantly greater ease.
        >finding any of those in flying condition outside a museum would be a miracle in and itself.
This part escaped me. I keep forgetting Russia is far less concerned with keeping up old aircraft than other nations. I'm willing to bet the US could field a hundred or so P-51s if there was ever a need, but Russians can hardly keep up their currently fielded aircraft.

There are stereotypes like Russian Boers and morons but in general they are a small minority, in general it reads like a mostly Russian website. It is Frank and realistic, but also cynical. They talk about ways to fix thier army, I like it because it's a different kind of /k/. It isn't any more brainwashed or filled with dysinfo than here as far as I can tell. Give it a visit, your Google can autotranslate whole websites. Visiting dvatch has given me a good laugh more than once.

Problem with dropping to 200mph is the time in skyline over any manpad (which always around CAS targets)is sufficient enough to get lock and fire. Hence jets even low never get manpad they've been and gone before lock and fire.
The A10 goes fast enough and is armoured enough to avoid and sustain manpad size hits. Operating as CAS in a small locality with heavy sead against larger buk etc that can down it, the A10 will have, in relation to the quantity of munitions it can drop per hour, with near front short runways, and its upgraded targeting pods on par with the advanced multirole jets, means the local air impact is unmatched and unresistable. With Ukraine showing harm usage on its rus shit, once this is demonstrated at creating an effective sead, Ukraine itself will need extra airplatforms to deliver CAS. So the requirements are more for Ukraine, since the USAF assign nil value to front line CAS, give half to Ukraine in lend lease so they can drop enough iron on the Russian lines
