Oryx and the US estimate put Russia at losing 10,000+ vehicles.
So even if you count mechanized units dying alone, it definitely is higher than 40,000. Infantry has been the most battered element this war, their deaths definitely add up.

To use that information we would need to know what percentage were just abandoned/broken down vehicles dragged away by a ukie farmer, what percentage were just a mobility kill without casualties and abandoned etc.
Not that I think Russian vehicles have very good crew survivability rates, but if the discussion is about trying to get accurate casualty rates then you'd need to take those into consideration.

Russia has been attacking into Ukrainian defenses for the most part. This generally results in more casualties for the attacker. Especially in instances where the defender can use entrenchments and strongpoints. The rest of Russia's campaign has mostly involved them getting constantly ambushed. Only two major Ukrainian offensives have occurred One was a complete rout (Kharkiv) and the other (Kherson) resulted in the Russians running away after about a month. Neither was a long grinding campaign where Russia had a defensive advantage and was able to attrite Ukraine for a long period at a favorable rate. Other factors that help reduce casualties:

      1. The decrepit state of Russian medical care. Reporting from soldiers that they lack proper casualty evacuation, sending injured soldiers back to duty, leaving their injured soldiers behind to die, widespread medical issues like Hep and HIV, etc..

      2. Widescale reporting on the Russian lack of proper training and frontline equipment. The Golden Hour + Platinum minute means the difference between life and death. Ukraine has better medical equipment and training for troops.

      3. Ukraine has nearby hospitals and proper casualty evacuation. They have specialized donated medical facilities and supplies from the west for traumatic injuries. Russia is sanctioned and lacks the foreign exchange to prioritize medicines.

      4. Ukraine is getting help from western hospitals for the gravely injured and those needing long term care.

      5. OSINT data shows a 3-to-1 loss ratio of vehicles which translates well into casualties and deaths.

      6. Video evidences shows much higher Russian losses.

      7. Statements from Russian sources about high casualties versus Ukraine. Statements from Ukraine about high Russian casualties.

      8. Ukraine has been donated high quality equipment (tents, stoves, generators, coats, boots, etc..) to avoid non-combat casualties. Russian is sending guys out in stolen sneakers.

      Keep Coping.

To be fair Kherson was like that. Not sure if you remeber but Ukies tried to capture Snihurivka for at least month and in the end they only got it when most of Russians already retreated.
I also remember the constant back and forth around Kyselivka.

You are shown by countless OPs showing Russian soldiers being killed by the hundreds daily through a combination of incompetence, malicious neglect, and Ukrainian battlefield skill and yet somehow manage to continue living in the willful fricking denial of it.

This is something I was actually thinking some time ago, if these guys actually started checking all the points we have presented here, watched guys like Peru instead of UH LE GAYMER!!!LEL!!! and used it as a sensible base for military reform they would have probably managed to at least take over most of Ukraine by now, instead they chauvinistically keep being contrarianists and attempting to deny reality despite how much it's hurting them.

I would say we should stop telling them in the remote case they were willing to do some introspection, but then I remembered if one of them even suggested that they will call him gay or degenerate so I guess we are good.

These morons would have you believe that Russia is sending wave after wave of human meat into fortified defensive positions, desperately trying and gain ground, but it's not the case at all.

The SMO has been extremely slow and methodical in its advance. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that the Russians have made widespread use of feeler/probe drones to sniff out entrenched positions and then used air superiority and artillery to blow the hell out of it before sending in any actual men. We've all heard the "They said they'd take Kiev in a month" meme, but it's a moron talking point; Russia has stated that's not the point of what they're trying to do, and what they've actually been doing in practice for the past year confirms that.

Here's the truth: The US administration is just using this as a way to launder money and make Raytheon and Boeing another trillion dollars. The Kiev regime is completely subservient to this end, and doesn't actually give a shit about its people, its country, or winning the war. They're going to keep sending men to the front until the amount of death and desertion reaches a critical mass, and then they're going to cash out. There's already talks of handing over the eastern part of the country to Poland (Lviv is half Polish anyway, from what I understand) and then they'll sell out to the EU, make some kind of big rebuild/economic "restructuring deal" which turns the country into a debt slave of the IMF.

Meanwhile, the US ruling class will have made a ton of money, added a portion of Ukrainian territory to NATO, and created a useful puppet regime that lords over a no-man's-land full of hostile neo-Nazis right on Russia's doorstep. Zelensky can keep drumming up anti-Russian sentiment in the EU (separating Europe from Russia's natural resource exports and making them even more dependent on the US). The Donbass will be annexed by Russia, just like Crimea was, and this will be used as a convenient pretext by the Kiev regime to engage in terrorism against Russia, with just enough degree of separation from NATO to avoid nuclear war.

honestly this entire conflict is a pretty grim spectre of things to come

I think a lot of people think war over the years has become less deadly because of things like drones and missiles - but in fact war is becoming even longer and deadlier. More general fatalities, relative fatalities, etc are all very high for both RU and UA, even taking into account their positions as attackers/defenders

The estimated death toll of WW2 is around 80-90 million with a world population of 2.3 billion. if another large scale conflict were to break out today, it would last twice as long and result in about 6% of the world population dying (480 million deaths)

I honestly think the Ukrainian claims of nearly 200,000 Russian dead are an underestimation if anything. We probably passed the 200k mark months ago.

They're only counting Russians that they kill in battle in their estimates. If you're wounded and evacuated back to Russia only to die of your injuries days or weeks later, you're not counted. If you freeze to death or drown after your trench gets flooded, you're not counted. If you desert and get executed by Kadyrovites, you're not counted.

Honestly, I don't think even the Russian leadership has any clue as to how many have died because I don't think they care enough to bother keeping track.

Despite the 'muh death of empires' thing Afghanistan is full of weak fighters who only are really capable of slow grinding guerilla tactics and not actual open warfare, and their "victories" were mainly due to the fact that Afghanistan's geography is the perfect defensive land aside from Switzerland and Jungles. In Ukraine you have a mostly component modern fighting force that will go into conventional warfare AND irregular warfare while Russia is at its absolute weakest militarily.

Afghanistan has only really been the graveyard of the Soviet Empire, all the others lasted many more years and eventually collapsed from unrelated reasons (Alexander from failing to room a successor, Britain from the World Wars, America from having worse interethnic relations than the Balkans, etc.).

The Greeks lasted until they got pushed out by steppe peoples and then had an Indo-Greek kingdom for a while (outlasted the ptolmies by like 30 years).

Russia is facing a conventional military opponent in addition to an entire country up at arms against them in Ukraine.

Keep in mind that historically the USSR has both undersold AND oversold their casualties.
E.g. a lot of Russians who died fighting against the USSR were recorded as "Germans killed him in a prison camp".

That's pretty low, especially compare to russo-Ukrainian war.

He cut out the top kek
      >Afghan security forces: 66,000–69,095 killed[62][63]
      >Northern Alliance: 200 killed[64][65][66][67][68]

      >Coalition: Dead: 3,579
Wow ivanovitch, great work. You’re even more moronic than the ANA, which 24 months ago I would have said was the most embarrassingly incompetent military on the planet

Are Russian convicts actually Ukranians? Because that's the only way that comparison works...

That includes 20 years of occupation, this was the invasion. Russia is still invading Ukraine, we can compare the occupation figures after they manage to capture Kiev and topple the government.

Russian doctrine has always been fricking moronic.
    >thrust tank/afv column forward
    >no intel
    >no reconnaissance
    >no infantry support
    >frick your screen, Ruri
    >any infantry support is riding on the tank and gets chopped down by machine guns almost instantly
    >blunder into an ambush
    >vehicles get picked off by atm and atgms
    >3-4 soldiers killed at a time
    >shitty comms, logistics and precision cas ao zero help for the poor fricks who dismounted
    >mass artillery strike the position hours or even days later
    >repeat

Add a zero and its closer to the reality. 200,000 - 300,000 is a more realistic estimate.

An Army equipped with tanks, heavy artillery and strategic air defenses having greater Russian killing potential than goat herders armed with AKs and some donated stingers really shouldn't be that surprising. And that's before they got actual high tech shit like HIMATS.
