Russian armored push in Avdiivka gets stopped by mines

Uhhhh zisters what's going on? Didn't our drone plant the russian flag on top of the slag heap? I thought the battle was over?

Real talk, is the trash heap still contested or have ziggers actually piled up enough bodies to climb it?

        so that's their strategy

          Anonymous

It's the only strategy russia has that still somewhat works. If 100 slaves die to take 1m, just throw a few thousand more

        Anonymous

There is ostensibly a flag up there, but there hasn't been any footage of a single zigger actually being up there, so either
        >A) the guys who planted it got shredded, so they can't post their images
        >B) they planted it with a drone
        >C) it's actually just CGI (the flag appears inconsistent)

Like day 1 or 2 they made it to the heap, as shown by the corpse halfway up it. It was probably then. As the telegram said then, they made it to the top, but all they got was artillery and death.

          Anonymous

what is even the point? anyone at the top is just going to get shredded by artillery and FPVs

Really there is no good tactical or strategic reason to take the spoil heap. This isn’t 1916 anymore and there’s no need for artillery observers to be placed on top of it. The fact Russia is wasting so many men and vehicles to take a fucking unmanned hill is a testament to their unbridled retardation.

              Anonymous

I thought that there was (some) advantage to being able to place your cannon artillery in elevated positions, especially in massive flatlands.
Am I retarded for assuming the trash heap had real utility?

I feel like any arty up there would just get himarsed instantly, its not exactly a hidden location.

Yeah makes sense…wild that this whole offensive has been for virtually nothing.

                Anonymous

While I'm not an artillery guy, and this is only looking at it from a geometric point of view, if the maximum range for artillery is achieved by firing at 45 degrees, then for every foot of vertical height the cannon goes up, you get an extra foot of horizontal length
In reality a firing arc is not an even parabola, and a million other things mean this is not exactly how things will work out, so I would assume you'd gain less than a foot of range for each foot you elevate your artillery
But in any case this small advantage in one location is almost certainly not worth ten thousand souls and hundreds of vehicles, and as anon has said, spotter drones exist, and anything that is actually put up on top of the hill becomes an extremely obvious target for superior Ukrainian counter battery, which all makes one think that this was for propaganda and saving face rather than for any strategic or tactical purpose
In other threads when anon has asked how anon would take this hill, the correct answer is to not take the hill, to just ignore it and move on

                Anonymous

That makes sense to me, thinking about it more I can’t imagine that the elevation of this heap is that significant a factor, and there’s no cover on the top so it would be a disadvantage to be up there and so exposed.

of course it's a worthless place like bakhmut

Both Russian and Ukrainian doctrine still includes the use of human recon units for artillery spotting. The use of precision artillery shells relies larging on laser targeting. Drones, although useful, are limited both by cloud cover affecting their targeting lasers and ECM. This actually really important because of changes to Russian artillery strategy has severely reduced the accuracy of their conventional artillery bombardments.

              Anonymous

The argument I see is that the Russians will set up defensive positions on the hill and "control" the area for miles.
There is no reason to occupy the scrap heap, and it's impossible to fortify.
Like yeah, you can see further on top of the hill than on the ground, but that goes both ways. The second you climb that hill top you are spotted by literally every single Ukrainian for miles, and you have nowhere to go for cover. It's the exact opposite of a strategic position; it's a hill you go to die on.

something like this probably. fwiw even if they take the trashpile i dont think this offensive is going anywhere

It's for passive observation. If you have to send a drone out every time you want to check out a location then you're: Giving away that you're scouting that area tipping off the enemy, and likely to miss information because you're briefly looking through an area during a limited amount of time.
Passive observation means you can just keep a guy or two posted up there with a pair of binos and a radio constantly watching for movements. It's this that will make the logistics of resupply harder as this guy is likely to spot the incoming vehicles and call for artillery on the highway etc, or notice that a spoiling attack is being staged by the defenders and tell the guys down the line that they're going to get raided pretty soon and to prepare.

The issue for the Ukrainians now is that from the heights of the slag heaps and surrounding areas the Russians can hit ALL supply lines with even 80mm mortars and if you have them on both sides even with 60mm mortars. Lots of roads are now in fagot atgm range and of course artillery too.

It's just too much works for himars to keep everything suppressed, now it's either the Ukrainians take back the heights near adviivka or are going to be forced into a gesture of goodwill like the Russians in Kherson when their supplies were under too much enemy fire.

Anyway how can the Ukrainians prevent this from happening without using human waves as the Russians are doing is my actual question which I don't know how to give an answer to.

      Anonymous

yes anon the mortars will simply be too high up for counter battery. and like... the trash heap is, like... so stinky so the ukrainians are going to be as far away from it as possible! did someone say ewwwwwwwww? hahaha!

      Anonymous

They can kill the forward observers using drones because there's no cover on that hill and destroy Russian artillery systems using their range advantage. Russians can't really put anything up there because it'd be completely suicidal.

It's a dead zone right now, it was only useful for the AFU because they do have better artillery and it wasn't heavily contested before.

This isn't even a security zone, it's literally a fucking FO post, and it's usefulness isn't symmetrical in any way.

Soledar fell months before Bakhmut, it turned out to be inconsequential. Avdiivka holds less value than either.

        [...]
Nah it's fucking over. They also wasted tens of thousands of men but eventually took Bakhmut. If this was going to be a Vuhledar style failure they wouldn't have made any gains at all and called it off by now. Since they're making gains and continuing to attack the shit show is going their way.

        >Nah it's fucking over.
        Not even remotely.
        >They also wasted tens of thousands of men but eventually took Bakhmut.
Yes which was a complete disaster and lead directly to Wagner falling apart and rebelling.
        >If this was going to be a Vuhledar style failure they wouldn't have made any gains at all and called it off by now.
        Vuhledar lasted longer than this
        >Since they're making gains and continuing to attack the shit show is going their way.
Losing a brigade in 10 days for the edge of a trash heap is unsustainable, it is absolutely not "going their way".

Anon, lets not make delusions and rewriting history. Bakmut, from the outside perspective, was a fucking PR win for ukraine. It took almost a year to take, it, every week, news about russians failing to take bakmut. For 10 months, the failure was shown in 4k 60fps. And to top it all of, when it was finally taken, the man responsible for it made the lulzy run for moscow, undermining any political power it might have had. The whole thing made the russians look weak.
