how the frick does this happen?
I suppose either the master arm was on or they went through the trouble of manually just dropping the missile? Does anyone have insight into how this would have gone down?
https://nitter.nl/Faytuks/status/1583055074455977989
Apparently it happened on September 29th, the RAF jet was an AWACS plane.
>tried to shoot down British plane
>50 year old missile plunged into water instead
>oops... was of accident comrade, da?
>50 year old Russian missile can't shoot down 60 year old British plane
Russia bros! Not like this!
given that it is Russia I 100% believe the technical malfunction thing. the only question is whether it malfunctioned in holding on to the missile or malfunctioned in firing the missile.
>accidentally released a missile
So it just fell off or something?
I mean it said released not launched so probably that lol. The AWACS plane would never be able to dodge a missile if it got launched accidentally unless it somehow missed which is even more embarassing
It wasn't a fricking AWACS aircraft, it was an RC-135. Same 707 base platform, different fitout, totally different mission.
>Same 707 base platform
C-135s use a different airframe based on the Boeing 367-80 that preceded the 707 and 720.
It's shorter and narrower than the 707 with a different wing design
Yeah I know that, I was just trying to put across in simple terms to the multiple people in the thread who thought it was an E-3.
aeroplane sex is weird
>every fricking happening
It's such a shame we can't have nice things about current events
>We don't know, but it does happen, not often but it does
I always wondered why it didn't happen more often, the hard-point must undergo a lot of strain during manoeuvrers.
That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
Well, how was it untypical?
well there are a lot of these planes going around the world all the time and very seldom does something like this happen, I just don't want people thinking that Russian aircraft aren't safe
Was this Russian aircraft safe?
Well obviously not a missile a "fell" from the aircraft and nearly triggered world war three killing 300 million people and the world entered nuclear winter. Its a bit of giveaway, but I'd like to make the point that is not normal.
It's not absolutely unheard of, in the '60s a B-52 was killed in a training exercise by an AIM-9 that launched from stray voltage, which is why they use captive missiles for training now. I could imagine that for whatever Russian reasons the missile launch circuit became energized inadvertently
You didn't get the joke, did you? Too keen to show off your knowledge rather than think, then chuckle.
Go watch this
and worship at the feet of Clarke and Dawes. RIP
Frick I'm autistic
So what sort of standards are these Russian aircraft built to?
Oh, very rigorous aeronautical engineering standards
What sort of thing?
Well the missile's not supposed to just fall off, for a start.
Uncle Vanya has the tools to fix his broken Su-27s in between fixing the engine on his tractor (tractors if he has been at the vodka before noon).
Did they fly the awacs out of the environment?
The front fell off
Well, the missile fell off in this case by all means, but it's very unusual.
How unusual are we talking about here?
Well very unusual, you see most of them are built so the missile doesn't fall off.
>accidentally
I would normally call bullshit on 'accidentally', but some of the videos from this war have really changed my opinion on Russia's competence.
THIS BUSINESS WILL GET OUT OF CONTROL, IT'LL GET OUT OF CONTROL AND WE'LL BE LUCKY TO LIVE THROUGH IT
Based frazzled Admiral Painter enjoyer.
"Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan."
Well he was wrong about that wasn't he. They invade whole countries without a plan.
It's ironic how US media and Hollywood sold russian commies as evil but competent thugs, with Red October, 4th protocol, Firefox, Ivan Drago, etc. but also "good" russians which didn't want to be commies anymore, just having a ranch in Montana.
The eastern euros were telling us that most russians, commie or not, were butthole rapists and thieves, and we didn't listen until this war.
Westsplaining is one helluva drug.
Nah it's entirely rhetoric in an attempt to pull Russians into the western sphere.
It worked.
How many Russians do you think left the USSR lmao, Russians have been suffering from people leaving Russia for over five decades
I've met quite a few "good" Russians. I met them all outside Russia of course.
Soviet Union and Russia are different. One was at parity with NATO and could out produce anyone in the world and the other desperately clings to the scraps of the other as it desperately loses relevance.
Soviets really tried to be something great and nearly succeeded, Russians are just kids playing in their grandfather's uniform.
>Nearly succeeded
The soviet union limped along as a superpower for its entire existence running off the resources they were able to extract from the 'Warsaw pact' countries they annexed. An empire that large doesnt just go bankrupt overnight, they couldnt afford any of the races they competed in against the West. The rest of eastern europe has spent the last few decades recovering from that while russia has continued the downward spiral it inherited because its leaders and much of the population doesnt want to let go of the socialist fever dream.
tf you on about, Russians don’t even want to be in Russia and routinely trash talk their homeland, and this war just exposed how no one is on board and lack of national pride and patriotism.
Marko Ramius was Lithuanian you uncultured swine.
Ramius didn’t want a ranch in montana.
Oh, they had a plan. It was "Let's do Hungarian/Czech coups again, it'll be over in 3 days."
What they didn't have was a Plan B.
Problem with that sort of undertaking is that there's no real way to make a plan B. You either pull it off, or you end up looking like a massive moron.
FIRE FIRE FIRE ON THE FLIGHT DECK
FIRE ON THE FLIGHT DECK FIRE ON THE FLIGHT DECK, ALL HANDS LEND ASSISTANCE
>Russia stated it was due to a technical malfunction
Dare I say, the missile is smoking?
>accidentally
They want to scare away the NATO flights monitoring them
The only policy change is the UK now sends typhoons to escort AWACS over the Black Sea, as per this has just made things worse for Russia
>Russia has once again made things harder for themselves
New day same shit
And how's UK spending resources on escort missions bad for russia?
It increases the gravity of the situation if they have a similar ‘mistake’ in the future. It won’t simply be a misfire on an asset that can’t fire back- it will be an immediate return of fire as soon as they perceive being fired upon. It’s difficult for Russia in the sense it adds tension when they really don’t need any more risk of conventional warfare with the west.
It seems like they spread NATO's attention on shit like this with no repercussion.
You might be right Anon, truthfully it’s hard to tell who this is more negative for - if either side fully crosses the line any conjecture like this goes out the window anyway.
The UK has been running Eurofighter flights for years, and it wastes a ton of flight hours just on civilian events, and now that will probably stop a few times a year.
Nothing has changed really.
Civilian air shows are being cut to meet emissions targets.
Flying an escort just means that British planes will be getting to do something useful during maintaining their flight hours instead of spending it on training. You could make a very dumb argument that this is a win for Russia in that they're spending less time training, but they're hardly straining UK resources to the point where they won't be getting enough training, and this is yet another area where Russia is pushing themselves closer to a war with the West which is something they really, really don't want.
Brinkmanship works both ways.
Putin has repeatedly backed down when called on shit or pushed: lol was only joking, NATO is overreacting!
It's possible to put him back in his box if he's handled correctly, you've seen the nuke threats be walked back and disappear already. This is one more way to fence him in.
Every time he sees that escalation (or even accidental possibility of escalation) is met with force, he walks it back and that path out of his doom is closed off. As more and more options are locked away by the clear availability of force in response to his threats of force, he grows more desperate and the opportunities multiple for his underlings to decide that their safest option is to remove him and negotiate.
>they spread NATO's attention on shit like this with no repercussion
NATO can afford the attention because escorting an aircraft is a very low-effort activity and the people doing it would be idle otherwise.
Russia now has to worry much more about their air patrols over the black sea and if they get tempted to match the NATO escorts, it pulls air assets away from the war.
>his underlings to decide that their safest option is to remove him and negotiate.
call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm positive that Putin is already dead. He died a few months ago of cancer and his cronies are using his army of body doubles to continue the war while they each figure out exit strategies.
The two escorts are capable of wiping out the entirety of russian air force alone.
And what they got is Typhoons escorting AWACS now.
Ah yes because firing missiles at NATO planes will definitely scare them away and not bring nuclear armaggedon if one of them hits the target. Brillant plan Sergei.
No one said it was a particularly good plan.
Right I remember when the nukes flew when the Soviets shot that U-2 down.
>jettisoning your missiles surely will scare off the HATO pilots
lol
they're now speedrunning towards pre-cuban missile crisis cold war
>be me, russian pilot
>see bribing awacs
>decided to spook him by painting him with my targeting radar
>press button which is supposed to turn on targeting
>it fires one of my air to air missiles
>missile was not armed, crisis averted
It's not AWACS - it was an RC-135 Rivet Joint ELINT platform.
I know what an AWACS does, what does ELINT do?
>ELINT
Electronic Intelligence / Intercept
> giant plane, usually an old 707
> loitering in the sky
> hoovering up signals intelligence
> usually have linguists on the plane
> or are downloading intercepts in real time to ground stations
> usually both
>> hoovering up signals intelligence
>> usually have linguists on the plane
Yea when I did my ASVAB in high school the airforce tried to get me to agree to sign up as an airborne cryptologic linguist since I had really good language scores and several years of Chinese language study.
Seemed dumb to enlist though since you know, college.
detect electro-magnetic signals
basically sniff out anything sending out electronic radiation, be it comms or radar but mostly the latter iirc
This, but its task is to produce and then persistently update and "Electronic Order of Battle" - as in, use all those emissions it's sucked up, to determine what units are where, what they're equipped with, who's in command of them, who they're in communications with, what their detection radius is on various sensors, what range they can employ weapons, etc, etc. All that intel the Ukies are getting from NATO is predominantly ELINT seasoned with radar and visible imagery. The reason the Russians lost so many general earlier in the war is because Ukraine knew not only where CPs were but also when to hit them.
You are talking to tourists, so they don’t have a fricking scooby. Don’t educate them, their ignorance allows everyone else to know they’re tourists and ignore them.
Only "accident" was the missile failing to ignite. We are all on the cusp of WW3, sitting on a powderkeg with the russians playing with matches.
Let's just get it over with and grind moscow to a fine dust before the nukes fly.
Bitch, if he had been firing at the plane:
1. They wouldn't have been in a position to see the missile fall off, since he would've been behind them in firing position.
2. He would've fired another/strafed it.
100% he was showboating for the crew. Barrel roll/roll over the plane/climb-out/loop over the plane, and one of the missiles was just poorly secured and fell off as the crew was watching.
The wording used is "released a missile in the vincinity of rc-135 beyond vision range", so they didnt visually see the missile dropped/launched/whatever.
Black person, WW3 is already on since 2014, go back to sleep.
>WW3 is already on since 2014
The battle for Taiwan has in fact started already with the west fighting China by opposing Russia, in Ukraine.
>Let's just get it over with and grind moscow to a fine dust before the nukes fly.
You won't. Nukes will fly if Russia thinks nukes will fly. You may get to grind what's left after, but not before.
It’s like that incident with the fleet of the damned and the British fishing boats they shot at
RAF Pilot: I would've been mighty pissed if that missile actually worked, mate.
>accidentally released
That sounds a lot like, "Fell off."
I'm gonna guess the fighter was showboating it just came off when he pulled a couple g's.
/k/opers on suicide watch
actual mental illness
/misc/ is a containment board for a reason. It's like a mental asylum.
Tie me to a missile and fire it at /misc/
How about we don't tie you to the missile, but instead increase the warhead?
>just letting them know that their stealth technology is weak af
oh no nonono don't tell him about the kh101
jesus christ. the most pathetic dregs of humanity in a single board, what a sight to behold.
>just letting them know that their stealth technology is weak af
>none of the aircraft involved are stealth
Did the guy read 'spy plane' and think it was stealth?
None of these people are military autists.
You are too used to /k/ which despite its moronation, is at least is pretty good at someone recognising a plane or something.
The greatest collection of Low IQ, High self-regard morons on the web.
I'm racist and I hate /misc/ so fricking much
God i love /misc/ so goddamn much, they are the very definition of based morons, they dont even do anything and just look how rent free they live in all of the sois heads that seethe ITT.
Truly the /k/ope board.
Low effort bait
Being such a shit that people complain about you doesn't make you based.
You have to at least be funny doing it too. Otherwise you're just enjoying this because you're jealous of anybody who isn't a complete failure like you.
>writing this post
Your parents change the subject whenever their friends ask how you're doing
>
/misc/ is an antifa board you nazi ucro scum
Huh? The stormBlack folk scared all the tankies off the board. You can still find them in PrepHole though.
I have been lurking and posting in /misc/ since 2014-2015. It has had a genuine degradation in IQ for several years. You could unironically post a picture of an inspect-altered Washington Times article that says the exact opposite of the genuine article, link the real article in the first post, and no one would click the link to even check what you say in the OP until ~100 posts in if that. It's fricking wild.
It’s almost as if concerted efforts to destroy the board over the last 6 years by multiple different groups have been taking place.
>the most mentally stable dane posts on /misc/
>how the frick does this happen?
We don't know, but it does happen, not often but it does
https://www.dw.com/en/spanish-nato-jet-accidentally-fires-missile-in-estonia/a-44993518
So this explains why there was multiple Typhoons over the black sea last night or so.
>how the frick does this happen?
Does russian incompetence really surprise you at this point?
Ah, so this is why fighters are flanking the awacs lately.
Ah yes, the 707 platform, the Russian airforces main prey.
All of their not-fricked-up planes are assigned to more important duties dumbfiring anti-ship missiles at school playgrounds, and Russia is huge so maintaining any semblance of border security takes a lot of planes. Aside from the ones literally shot down they probably had to strip a bunch more to keep others flying because the sanctions prevent them buying some of the parts. The Russian Air force is only a few dozen donated Gripens away from losing control of their own skies.
>The Russian Air force is only a few dozen donated Gripens away from losing control of their own skies.
I think they probably still have loads of SAMs in place.
The airspace is still plenty spicy, it's just not going to have a lot of dogfights in it.
Kek, that Russian pilot must have shit himself. He knew he nearly triggered Article 5
>accidentally releases
Literally me with my first three girlfriends. I'm glad I have something to empathize with regarding the Russians
Haha, imagine if his zoomer squadron decides that his new callsign should be Coomer.
>Sergei was flying drunk and in a moment of patriotic fervor got uppity with an R-77
>actual technical failure, shitty Russian maintenance resulted in missile coming off the rails by myself
>there was a no-bullshit but failed A2A engagement, and everybody involved had second thoughts about starting WW3
Testament to the absolute state of Vlad's military that I seriously can't tell which one of these possibilities accounts for what happened.
Russian aircraft shit itself
The missile realised it was not a civilian airliner and self destructed
its probably just dropped its fricking fuel tank or some shit
Russia said it was an accident, so maybe don't make assumptions.
>how the frick does this happen?
It's called high tensions. It's how wars start when morons refuse to deescalate. This why people are talking about nuclear war. A nuclear power feels threatened and is at a heightened readiness status. Someone somewhere misinterprets a HATO action somewhere and whoopsie daisy here come the IBCMs.
>whoopsie daisy here come the IBCMs.
DO IT homosexual
>Interbontinental Colistic Missile
>InterBaric Colonic Mass
>how the frick does this happen?
This wasn't an accident, the pilot fired on purpose.
I am guessing the pilot fired without locking on to frick with them and then everyone started downplaying this because it would be a major incident so both sides pretend it was an accident.
I'm thinking the same.
>Russian has a moment of humanity
>Does a friendly wiggle to the RAF
>accidentally fires missile
>shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit
>world ends in nuclear hellfire before you get back to base
>but the RAF guy also gave a wiggle
>so it's all good
>wiggle plane at RAF pilot in friendly gesture
>missile falls off
>RAF pilot wiggles and drops a missile too
Just a negligent discharge. Happens all the time to people on this board
In Russian defense, their KA52 fired rockets at journalists in a military exercise.
As sophisticated and failsafe their tech is it tend to malfunction sometimes. Like these rockets that do a U-turn and returns to sender.
>OH GOD I'm GONNA FOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
>I'M FOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG
>Russian Pilot
>Probably
> Apparently it happened on September 29th, the RAF jet was an AWACS plane.
No, it wasn’t. And the missile most likely was fired deliberately.
i'm pretty sure this is why the UK deputy defence minister was summoned to DC immediately and without warning
Yeah a flash to bang time of weeks is certainly immediate. Imbecile.
If a missile arms and won't disarm, it's SOP to eject it somewhere safe so the fricker doesn't blow up when you land. It's also normal for you to ditch the missile if the armcomp can't tell you whether or not it's disarmed. Which is more common than you think -- circuit boards get dislodged by high-G maneuvers, or old wiring shorts out, or whatever.
Pilotoviki was of just recovering from hangover, was total accident, you see.
Why don't Ukraine shoot down russian aircraft over Black sea or anywhere near Ukraine?
They dont have the capability I believe
Why won't NATO supply them with? Especially since russian are posing threat to NATO surveillance planes.
