Russian aircraft accidentally releases missile after interacting with RAF jet

how the frick does this happen?
I suppose either the master arm was on or they went through the trouble of manually just dropping the missile? Does anyone have insight into how this would have gone down?

https://nitter.nl/Faytuks/status/1583055074455977989

Apparently it happened on September 29th, the RAF jet was an AWACS plane.

given that it is Russia I 100% believe the technical malfunction thing. the only question is whether it malfunctioned in holding on to the missile or malfunctioned in firing the missile.

I mean it said released not launched so probably that lol. The AWACS plane would never be able to dodge a missile if it got launched accidentally unless it somehow missed which is even more embarassing

It wasn't a fricking AWACS aircraft, it was an RC-135. Same 707 base platform, different fitout, totally different mission.

          >Same 707 base platform
C-135s use a different airframe based on the Boeing 367-80 that preceded the 707 and 720.
It's shorter and narrower than the 707 with a different wing design

It's not absolutely unheard of, in the '60s a B-52 was killed in a training exercise by an AIM-9 that launched from stray voltage, which is why they use captive missiles for training now. I could imagine that for whatever Russian reasons the missile launch circuit became energized inadvertently

Soviet Union and Russia are different. One was at parity with NATO and could out produce anyone in the world and the other desperately clings to the scraps of the other as it desperately loses relevance.

Soviets really tried to be something great and nearly succeeded, Russians are just kids playing in their grandfather's uniform.

            >Nearly succeeded
The soviet union limped along as a superpower for its entire existence running off the resources they were able to extract from the 'Warsaw pact' countries they annexed. An empire that large doesnt just go bankrupt overnight, they couldnt afford any of the races they competed in against the West. The rest of eastern europe has spent the last few decades recovering from that while russia has continued the downward spiral it inherited because its leaders and much of the population doesnt want to let go of the socialist fever dream.

It increases the gravity of the situation if they have a similar ‘mistake’ in the future. It won’t simply be a misfire on an asset that can’t fire back- it will be an immediate return of fire as soon as they perceive being fired upon. It’s difficult for Russia in the sense it adds tension when they really don’t need any more risk of conventional warfare with the west.

Flying an escort just means that British planes will be getting to do something useful during maintaining their flight hours instead of spending it on training. You could make a very dumb argument that this is a win for Russia in that they're spending less time training, but they're hardly straining UK resources to the point where they won't be getting enough training, and this is yet another area where Russia is pushing themselves closer to a war with the West which is something they really, really don't want.

            Brinkmanship works both ways.

Putin has repeatedly backed down when called on shit or pushed: lol was only joking, NATO is overreacting!
It's possible to put him back in his box if he's handled correctly, you've seen the nuke threats be walked back and disappear already. This is one more way to fence him in.

Every time he sees that escalation (or even accidental possibility of escalation) is met with force, he walks it back and that path out of his doom is closed off. As more and more options are locked away by the clear availability of force in response to his threats of force, he grows more desperate and the opportunities multiple for his underlings to decide that their safest option is to remove him and negotiate.

It seems like they spread NATO's attention on shit like this with no repercussion.

            >they spread NATO's attention on shit like this with no repercussion
NATO can afford the attention because escorting an aircraft is a very low-effort activity and the people doing it would be idle otherwise.
Russia now has to worry much more about their air patrols over the black sea and if they get tempted to match the NATO escorts, it pulls air assets away from the war.

This, but its task is to produce and then persistently update and "Electronic Order of Battle" - as in, use all those emissions it's sucked up, to determine what units are where, what they're equipped with, who's in command of them, who they're in communications with, what their detection radius is on various sensors, what range they can employ weapons, etc, etc. All that intel the Ukies are getting from NATO is predominantly ELINT seasoned with radar and visible imagery. The reason the Russians lost so many general earlier in the war is because Ukraine knew not only where CPs were but also when to hit them.

100% he was showboating for the crew. Barrel roll/roll over the plane/climb-out/loop over the plane, and one of the missiles was just poorly secured and fell off as the crew was watching.

All of their not-fricked-up planes are assigned to more important duties dumbfiring anti-ship missiles at school playgrounds, and Russia is huge so maintaining any semblance of border security takes a lot of planes. Aside from the ones literally shot down they probably had to strip a bunch more to keep others flying because the sanctions prevent them buying some of the parts. The Russian Air force is only a few dozen donated Gripens away from losing control of their own skies.

I think they probably still have loads of SAMs in place.
The airspace is still plenty spicy, it's just not going to have a lot of dogfights in it.

    >Sergei was flying drunk and in a moment of patriotic fervor got uppity with an R-77
    >actual technical failure, shitty Russian maintenance resulted in missile coming off the rails by myself
    >there was a no-bullshit but failed A2A engagement, and everybody involved had second thoughts about starting WW3
Testament to the absolute state of Vlad's military that I seriously can't tell which one of these possibilities accounts for what happened.

    >how the frick does this happen?
It's called high tensions. It's how wars start when morons refuse to deescalate. This why people are talking about nuclear war. A nuclear power feels threatened and is at a heightened readiness status. Someone somewhere misinterprets a HATO action somewhere and whoopsie daisy here come the IBCMs.

This wasn't an accident, the pilot fired on purpose.

I am guessing the pilot fired without locking on to frick with them and then everyone started downplaying this because it would be a major incident so both sides pretend it was an accident.

In Russian defense, their KA52 fired rockets at journalists in a military exercise.
As sophisticated and failsafe their tech is it tend to malfunction sometimes. Like these rockets that do a U-turn and returns to sender.

No, it wasn’t. And the missile most likely was fired deliberately.

If a missile arms and won't disarm, it's SOP to eject it somewhere safe so the fricker doesn't blow up when you land. It's also normal for you to ditch the missile if the armcomp can't tell you whether or not it's disarmed. Which is more common than you think -- circuit boards get dislodged by high-G maneuvers, or old wiring shorts out, or whatever.
