They probably lack the intelligence gathering capabilities to accurately locate Ukranian deposits

They likely never invested in the intelligence for that because Ukraine was supposed to roll over and die in the span of three days.

No they did the problem was the agents just stole all the money.
Big reason there was a huge FSB purge and half the intial invasion plans imploded was they thought the FSB had laid all the ground work they reported on but it was all lies and they actually pocketed the money.

I don't know, it does seem to me there's a strategic decision to use precision missiles to target civilians rather than military targets. I don't know if it's Putin, but I'm betting it is, since most military leaders know you can't bomb a country into submission. But someone higher up thinks it'll be easier to bomb civilians into submission than it is to bomb Ukrainian tanks and win militarily.

        Anonymous

It's a "decision" forced by the reality that they don't have the ability to locate and strike military targets deep in Ukraine. Powerplants don't move.

Yeah, but couldn't they invest in intelligence gathering instead? Recon drones and such?

We have no idea what Russian intelligence capabilities are on that front. The materiel Russia wants to target is likely constantly on the move and rapidly dispersed, that means there aren't many great targets, they're hard to find, and hard to kill with inaccurate Soviet missiles and Iranian drones.

Still, a bomb that goes off in an apartment building only bolsters morale on the other side. And those missiles are expensive.

Yes. They clearly underestimated Ukraine's ability to resist and the West's willingness to supply weapons. Their initial plan did somewhat account for this with a rapid invasion that would knock Ukraine's legitimate government out of the eastern parts of the country, but that did not succeed.

It's funny when you look at Russia's recent military history.

The west largely sat by during the Chechen wars, seeing it as Russia's problem. Ergo Russia learns the west is okay with indiscriminate civilian bombing.

In the Russo-Georgia war, Russia instigated a border conflict siding with ethnic minorities that hated Georgia, de-facto taking that territory. Georgia wanted to join NATO, and the west largely backed them, but within a week France negotiated a ceasefire in the name of peace and stability. Also in this war the report got back that Russia needed to modernize, shift away from a soviet command infrastructure and conscript army. Here Russia learned invading a country keeps them out of NATO, and that the west will give you what you want in the name of stability and peace.

In 2014 when Russia annexed Ukraine they learned the west will leave Ukraine out to dry rather than risk war with Russia, and they'll let them keep annexed territory.

The problem however is Putin like all dictators thinks that if he keeps getting away with this shit, it's because he's a based genius and he poops gold, and that if he keeps escalating broke democracies will keep letting him get away with it.

The problem is the western ruling class are brain-dead manchildren who didn't learn from fricking WWII that appeasement never works. Literally a fricking repeat of Hitler, only this time Czechoslovakia managed to fight back 1v1 despite the West's backstabbing. If Putin succeeded in taking Ukraine, he would have invaded Baltics within a year, triggering WWIII much like the invasion of Poland triggered WWII. The west owns Ukraine unlimited dicksucking till the end of time for preventing WWIII.

Well the problem was like with Hitler, the west assumed that Putin was a rational actor. That while he's certainly a bad guy and no friend of democracy, he ultimately preferred peace and stability to war and chaos, ergo appeasing him as beneficial towards preserving stability, which is the number one important thing to western capitalists. The problem is that Putin is in fact not a rational actor, because he was given everything he wanted and decided to invade Ukraine anyway, and when the west realized he couldn't be bargained with, they've gone all in on opposing him.

I think it's a lesson that's been forgotten cause you've had a lot of 'reasonable autocracies' in the current era. Like China and Saudi Arabia. Bad for democracy, but they prefer stability to chaos, and the prefer to do business than instigate conflicts because they both benefit from the status quo.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone whose paid attention to Putin. He believes in a zero-sum game. That by definition if Russia fails it is to the wests benefit, and if the west suffers it is to Russia's benefit. It's why he's paying a bunch of internet trolls to post conservative memes.

The US broadcast the formation of a materiel command in Ukraine, and the Russians would rather not kill US personnel in volume, which striking those nodes would do. It's an escalation mechanism if required. For now, they just kill eqpt operators and field command as it happens.
