That's 4% larger. There is no debate. It's over.

moron here. Can someone actually explain the difference between these two tank guns for me? Does barrel diameter translate into increased power? I imagine that the amount of explosives, the length of the round, ect matters too, but then that begs the question of why we ever moved on from 105mm instead of just building increasingly more powerful guns with the same bore diameter. And then you have some claiming that 130mm is the way of the future. Meanwhile whoever is designing the M10 Booker decided that 105mm is enough. I don't get it. Is bore diameter a limiting factor in how powerful the gun is? Is 125mm more powerful than 120mm or not?

      >does barrel diameter translate into increased power?
it influences the maximum diameter of shell you can use, just like with small arms, although almost all tank guns fire sub-caliber munitions now so it doesn't really matter, and the western darts are better than the old Soviet crap, and the new Russian darts don't exist at all

it does make a slight difference for lobbing high explosives at buildings, which the American 120mm straight up isn't designed to do lol because we have air power for that

Nuh uh. That's not what the Russian WT devs said.

saying that the fancy new Russian darts that have parity with current American darts exist is like saying that the new HE round for the Abrams for use against buildings that's just entering production exists

The 105mm literally got ammunition so good it surpassed 115mm ammunition, even though the 115mm gun was really good.

A lot of 125mm ammo is actually worse than the latest 105mm ammo

Its a matter of diminishing returns, If you increase the pressure you are going to get hugely increased wear on the gun and will have to massively strengthen the pressure bearing areas so it doesn't burst. This increases exponentially with higher pressure, whereas muzzle energy actually has diminshed returns the high the pressure gets. Better to keep the chamber pressure at a moderate level and increase the bore size, which increases the area of pressure acting on the projectile.

Theoretically you could squeeze more energy out of a 125mm more easily, but remember its russia.

Bigger round = more space to cram in propellant (and payload for HE rounds), and bigger diameter thus better performance for HEAT rounds.
Bigger rounds are also usually longer, so you can have longer thus better performing sabots.
Of course, higher quality rounds can squeeze a lot of value out of the same diameter, and since bigger diameter guns can't use your existing stock everybody waits for significant increases before switching.

Losat was the true anti everything weapon, it was just too early

It costed too much back in the day, now you can build laser seeking missiles for the price of a used car and with a missile you can customise it far more than a dart

For heavy duty era that can degrade darts you can just make the losat slightly longer without even increasing the rod lenght and make it detonate too early

It can also take down helicopters and low fying aircraft just because how damn fast the missile itself is

The M60A2 and M551 also had 152mm guns rather than 155mm, which is weird for American vehicles.

I mean, a few of them exist, but they aren't being used in Ukraine
saying that the fancy new Russian darts that have parity with current American darts exist is like saying that the new HE round for the Abrams for use against buildings that's just entering production exists

This was always ridiculous and pissed me off, in large part because it seems arbitrary as to which vehicles and variants get late war/experimental/uncommon ammo and which ones don't.
Also, even non-classified publicly known estimates 120mm ammo like M829/A1/A2/A3 vs 125mm ammo show 120mm is better so whatever Gaijin is smoking I'd love to have it.

That's because 3BM59/60 can only be used in the T-90M and 3BM69 can only be used in the Armata due to size constraints of the gun and carousel autoloader.
It's honestly baffling that the Russians just doubled down on carousels and didn't copy the Leclerc bustle autoloader like everyone else, knowing penetrator length will probably create the exact same problem again in the future.
