      Real question:

How many combat-capable troops does Wagner even have left? Will this even make a material difference on the ground?

        Anonymous

Vaginer was pretty much the best they had on the ground. With them gone, the only decent troops remaining are what's left of the VDV, and those won't last out the year either.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if they try the same human wave tactics again when the Cadaverites arrive to their positions in Mariupol. Except this time it'll probably be Shtrafbat (penal battalions) formed by the Puccian MoD who will take the place of the cannon fodder while the Cadaverites and what's left of the VDV act as blocking troops and mop up.

The goal was not to take it. It was to reduce the West's supply of gunpowder, which succeeded

why would you mine a fricking tree? do they think they're fighting squirrels?

        Anonymous

Trees are often hugged for cover from drones and generally are useful at stopping certain calibre rounds. So you hug the edge (aka off the road) and set off the mine as you walk past.

these Black folk mine fricking everything out of spite. they've been caught mining dead bodies before too. It's in their modus operandi.

        Anonymous

I am guessing that the cable we're seeing snaking out from the mine is crossing an open area they are expecting Ukies to drive through, the idea being that once you get deep enough innawoods, any direction you turn will have a tree explode and fill you with splinters.
of course, this is still admitting that you expect the enemy to be seizing your territory shortly...

I don’t understand why the Europeans are being such feckless, unenthusiastic contributors of material to Ukraine.

Like… in America fricking with Russia is tradition. And there’s the Budapest memorandum.

But the Russians are like… Europe’s next-door neighbor. If anyone was going to be invaded, it would be them. Poland and the Baltic states are taking this seriously, but how is Western Europe (Spain, France) and Southern Europe so lacking in camaraderie? Germany is doing OK, but damn do they drag their feet.

Huh. Maybe I’m tripping and I just haven’t seen the assets on the field yet.

Alright. Let’s see how the counter-offensive goes.

I maintain that all European parties should be contributing way more unless they have a secret desire to go to war with each other on the continent. (Seems unlikely.)

Italy more than contributed their fair share, especially self propelled guns.

Why are they pulling out? They surely have enough forces to stop the counter-offensive? I was reading today about how they delivered 'hundreds' of T-90M 'Breakthrough' tanks to the commands in Ukraine. What the frick? Ukraine has barely 100 western MBTs.

That doesn't explain why they're pulling back. Are they pulling back so Ukraine has to spread thin clearing out the territory and then do a counter-attack? I keep being told the Russians have loads of reserves and stuff so that must be it.

Yeah the same one Ukraine just droned major oil facilities on both sides of despite not having advanced yet. That bridge.

Fricking Vatniks are going to deliberately put themselves in a self regulating POW camp with no supplies/food like the Japanese in WW2 and they're acting like it is a good thing.

        Who knows. Might be:

        1. Disinformation from the Ukies to create panic among Russians
        2. Disinformation from the Russians to induce an attack where they want
        3. Russians clearing out non-essentials to make it easier to defend/supply long term
        4. An attempt by Russia to retreat to prewar borders and make a more credible nuclear threat
        5. A real problem with Russian logistics that cannot be resolved. It might be better to retreat to more defensible lines that can be more easily supplied than risk destruction of irreplaceable equipment by holding extra terrain and cities which siphon manpower and risk partisan activity

I'm sure there are others. I don't think it is insane to retreat, but it runs counter productive to retreat after building all those entrenchments. My guess is #3

I pick this one. First it begins with random missile and drone strikes everywhere. Then come the partisans. Then the army pokes the weak spots, then breakthrough. Then good will gesture. Just like last time.

I think it’s Russia giving Wagner notice that they’ve outlived their usefulness as a combat organization. So like #3, yeah.

I am absolutely boggled. This has to be a trap, right?
