If Russia doesn't take Bakhmut by the end of 5the week its over, they will never be able to take it. Mud season is starting NOW, and makes offensive actions are basically impossible until the ground turns from mud back into earth.

I think the next major event in the war is going to be Ukraine's spring offensive. Of course, we don't know when that is happening, what area they plan to attack, and what role Bakhmut plays into it all (stalling and slaughtering Russians, I suppose).
Either way, whether Bakhmut falls or not within the coming weeks probably doesn't matter much, because it has mostly served it's purpose. The offensive will be the next big thing.

If that's the case they may actually just hold onto Bakhmut still. If the plan was always to hold it till the offensive starts then what's two more months after seven?

          >If that's the case they may actually just hold onto Bakhmut still.
That seems to be what they're doing. I think they planned to abandon Bakhmut months ago, but because they've been able to hold on to it for much longer than predicted, I think they might actually try to hold on to it as this point, because they're getting so close to the spring offensive.
I'm still 50/50 no that though. I wouldn't be surprised if let Russia have it at this point. We'll see.

Yeah, that's the problem with trying to analyze anything at all. While Russia is easy to predict, Ukraine is keeping their cards close to their chest, which has worked out well for them in the past.
We know something is going to happen, based on the predicted spring offensive, so it's hard to tell if and/or why they're pulling out of Bakhmut, and what role it has played in their overall strategy.
I mean, the obvious assumption which I think most of us can agree on, is that they've used Bakhmut to grind down and kill as many Russians as possible, while taking comparatively few losses. The question is whether or not they're pulling out now because they can't hold on to Bakhmut anymore, or because it has served its purpose. Then there's the third, but less likely option, that they intend to hold on to it, because the spring offensive is so close that it's become viable. If they attack elsewhere in force, Russian forces will be diverted, and Bakhmut will no longer be threatened.

I have a guess what the Ukrainians might be up to.

They're going to force the Russians to use way too much ammo at the same time they strike Russian ammo supplies AND production. The Russians run out of ammo in the area, and are forced to flee.

He was doomposting a few days ago, but his latest reports suggest no retreat is taking place and that the Ukrainians have stabilised the situation on the flanks and they will hold the city as long as it's feasible

Yeah. The one the Ukrainians blew up was in the center of the city and it wasn't a road bridge, but a railway bridge, based on what I read. Admittedly, I didn't look too closely into it, so feel free to correct me.

Mud season doesn't matter for Russia's new tactics (pinoneered by Wagner) of predominantly relying on light infantry inflitration and human wave assaults.
Incidentally, these tactics are uniquely suited to take advantage of Russia's main advantage (manpower) and ideally suited for slow, grinding advance into the densely settle area beyond Bakhmut.
Unless Russia runs out of manpower, food and WW-2 era artillery, they will continue to slowly advance forward.

Mud season does not turn the ground into a marsh, especially not on roads (unless you happen to be in Sibir or some parts of Poland and Finland, where it does exactly that). Light infantry can continue to advance normally unless the front stalls and the continue movement over the same ground turns entire fields into giant mud traps.

why would ukranians take huge casualties? 100-300 a day dead and wounded ukranians around bakhmut is nothing when the kill rate is 7:1

40,000 wagner casualties alone around there, most are prisoners of course, but bakhmut is definitely tying them up

How likely is that the ukies dug tunnels to enter and exit the city as they please and make it pretty much impossible for the vatniks to be 100% safe from ambushes coming out of a random bM2its of rubble?

The entire town is built on top of a salt mine complex with miles and miles of criss-crossing tunnels.
It's a clusterfrick, and a perfect opportunity to do some ambush attacks or tunnel rat shit. They probably have an underground exit route even if russians cut all the roads.

Not even a vatBlack person sympathizer, but wasn't that the same cope at Soledar? Sure it was costly for the assaulting Russians, but they did eventually throw enough meat to take it, salt mine neo-vietcong tunnels or no.

What has capturing Soledar done for them? It's cost thousands or tens of thousands, only to get them closer to capturing Bakhmut. What will capturing Bakhmut get them?

That isn't really my argument, frankly I think even IF, and that remains a big IF at this point, Russia captures Bakhmut that there isn't really a readily apparent follow up they can make from there, particularly with mud season about to hit full force.

That still doesn't change the fact that I think the supposed strategic significance of the salt mines is being overstated. Bakhmut isn't like Mariupol where the remaining Ukrainian defenders have an obviously heavily defensible area they can fall back to, hold up in, and conduct operations out of for months on end.

My theory is that Putin realized it was a mistake and to survive he needs to get all the warhawks killed and make it so painful that his withdrawal later would be seen as heroic and a relief. Because warhawks will blame him for starting and losing the war while others will just carry on

Assuming the Russians are actually sending those to the front, it's going to be fun to see which tank will get destroyed first. A western tank or an Armata. Based on the extreme rarity of the latter and the fact that Russia is probably going to keep them in the back to avoid a propaganda loss, my bet would be on a western tank getting destroyed first, simply because they'll actually see combat.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Russian pranks on their own army

The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Monke's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from popadanets literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Special Military Operation truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Putin's existencial catchphrase "I'm gonna regrooop!," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Surkov's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Z tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

It doesnt have a bore evacuator. It doesnt need one, because the crew is sitting up front, isolated from the turret compartment. It means that the T-14 can throw its turret and then drive away.

      Anonymous

"They might deploy better tanks in an effective manner somewhere along the line", however incredulous a possibility that is, is infinitely more valuable than "they drove the only three they had onto anti-tank mines and it turns out they're made of wishful thinking and aluminum, lmao". Once the T-14 is *provably* demonstrated to be the paper tiger we all reasonably expect it to be, that's a big loss of both morale and useful uncertainty.

and this ofc assumes they can get them to move under their own power and whatnot, so, yknow...eh

I’m wasting my time posting analysis here, but what can I say? I’m addicted.

The RuAF lost militarily last year with the failure of the Kiev Encirclement operation. Due to lack of supplies / readiness they stalled out before completing the encirclement. Emergency delivery of NATO anti-tank weapons (plus Ukrainian weapons) caused horrendous casualties and loss of equipment. RuAF likely rebelled or was close to rebelling so the government had no choice but to call them back. Total defeat. And they NEVER recovered, they remained defeated to this day.

What’s been happening since last year is that they shifted the burden of infantry fighting to the separatists, probably as a deal to bring them in officially into the Russian Federation. The separatist territories were emptied out of men in a giant mobilization. They were just as bad as their former Ukrainian countrymen in training, command, etc, but NOT in weapons and supplies. RuAF, though defeated, could still operate artillery batteries which they did — attack targets, doing counter-battery, and provide organic fire support for separatists. Ukrainian guns would only attack targets, NOT do counter-battery, and, critically, not offer any organic fire support. Ukrainian troops got very weak, insufficient small tube mortars for fire support. This ultimately resulted in continual loss of territory by Ukraine. If the RuAF’s guns were better and hit things there may not be Zelensky government by now.

While Russia has made some tiny gains in the east, they've lost most of their initial gains, aside from the southern corridor spanning from the Russian separatist areas to Crimea, and I assume this is the area that the spring offensive is going to target, because it's going to be very difficult for Russia to reinforce it.
Russia's strategy at this point relies almost solely on artillery and human waves, and neither is sustainable. They're already forced to conserve their artillery due to expending most of their reserves, and with their lack of progress and equipment shortages, their human waves are likely to run out, as fewer people are going to be willing to throw themselves into the meatgrinder. The only thing that could temporarily boost Russia's abilities to fight in Ukraine is actually declaring war, which would lift most restrictions and provide them with far more manpower. But even that isn't going to be enough at this point.

      >What’s been happening since last year is that they shifted the burden of infantry fighting to the separatists, probably as a deal to bring them in officially into the Russian Federation.

Not exactly. The modern russian infantry doctrine appears to be strongly eugenic - garbage people (ukie rebels, prisoners, thirdworld people from churkastans) go in first, while pure blooded slavs are directing things and running complex weapon systems. The US armed forces has adopted a similar doctrine with its focus on recruiting mentally ill sexual deviants, insane women and BIPOC. However, the US armed forces have gone one step further than the russians - they have applied this doctrine at all levels including the officer corps.

The Ukrainians are fricking up to something. They've faced this kind of potential encirclement before via Severodonetsk.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to buy time for the western armor to arrive. If they can keep the Russians focused on Bakhmut it will make counter attacking in the north or south again much easier. It will also force the Russians to either abandon the assault on Bakhmut to try and stop a counterattack or face losing even more territory. Last time they chose to keep assaulting Bakhmut even though they were losing hundreds of square kilometers a day during the previous counterattack the Ukrainians did.

Russians frequently fixate on a single city in frustration due to their political desire for victories.

It looks like the Ukrainians have decided to really make the Russians work for Bakhmut, even when pulling out of the city proper.

    What?
Their offensive was incredibly successful. They recaptured Kherson, expelled the Russians from Kharkiv, and recaptured huge areas of land east of Kharkiv. Obviously they stopped at some point, considering the plan wasn't to retake all of Ukraine with the limited forces available, so I don't understand what you're talking about. Furthermore, they relied heavily on the western trained troops around Kharkiv, which is why they had so much success.
As for Mariupol, it served its purpose. They stalled Russians for months and inflicted disproportionate casualties on the enemy. Breaking the encirclement wasn't an option, and the reason the defenders had to give up was because they couldn't get supplies.

The Twittergays raking Syrskyi over the coals don't get it.

Prigozhin's ego is tied up in Wagner's success. Retreating does not gain you any advantage over his men, they will constantly and relentlessly attack for so long as he can find replacements. They will never stop and they can never be convinced to retreat. Retreating whenever they put you in a less than idea position means you will continuously, inexorably, unendingly give up territory, because Ukraine lacks the firepower advantage needed to defeat Wagner (ie to defeat Wagner you must wipe out one of its units and occupy their position before more can be brought up). The best that can be done is to defend every position they attack to the death because this at least slows their advance to such a crawl that longer-term strategic trends can change the situation overall.

This but unironically. Ukraine has around 5000 casualties since the start of the war, of which about 300 are KIA and 28 MIA. They are merely exaggerating the casualties to receive better equipment. Ukraine often takes russian bodies and stick them in ukrainian uniforms for RUAF and Wagner to find. Sometimes they put them into NATO uniforms or use bodies that look similar to Zelensky as a goof. I can't reveal my sources, as it would reveal me but it's reliable since it's a third party, boots on ground observation.

If I was in charge of organizing things for Russia I'd stop trying to go on the offensive if/when Bakhmut falls. I'd focus on digging in what artillery and armor I have left, and on amassing and preparing as much of the air force as I can in preparation for the anticipated Ukrainian counter offensive. Then when it occurs use the air force to blunt the offensive as much as physically possible, ideally stopping it before another major gesture of good will has to occur.
The objective would just be to focus on making things as messy as possible, holding onto what is currently held, and hopefully freeze the conflict. Ideally the West gets bored and stops funding the Ukrainians so heavily, and Russia has time to lick it's wounds, beg for gibs from the Chinese, Iranians, and North Koreans, and hopefully actually try to learn a few lessons before Monke inevitably tries the entire thing again in a few years.

Is it a great plan? Not really, but frankly I think it's a hell of a lot better than anything General Armageddon, General Winter, General Confusion, or General Inept have come up with.

That mainly applies to some old boomer soviet era civilians. The smart thing to do would be to leave them to their fate and prepare a better defensive position outside the city where the risk of encirclement is significantly lower.

That said even if there were say 5,000 troops holding position inside/around the city they can still make things difficult for Russia for some time. I don't think they could hold out for nearly as long as Mariupol did, but on the other hand I think Ukraine both is in a much better position to launch a counter attack that could potentially break the (as yet) potential encirclement, and that the potential defenders could likely make things difficult enough for the mud season to really get going.

Maybe poisoning Kadyrov was a warning to other military commanders in ukraine. He stopped fighting and went home. And he got whacked.

So it's a message: "Don't even think of coming home until the job is done. Results are expected, and if you come home without them, you will die here just as likely as in ukraine."

That's why Prigozhin is pleading ukies to stop fighting. He knows he's running out of men and ammo, and that he can't withdraw without taking the city or he too will get whacked.

      >So I guess they still think that it's worth holding on to it for at least little while longer. It is a good meatgrinder for mobiks, if nothing else.
It's sucking up a HUGE amount of Russian focus, manpower etc. Yes it's costing Ukraine significantly in terms of some resources, but note how Ukraine has been very careful in what they deploy. It's not all their vehicles, it's troops, artillery (at a safe distance) etc.

Ukraine right now is trying very, very hard to muster enough for a serious mechanized counter thrust somewhere, maybe in the south. So they really don't want to be expending what they need for that holding the line. Having everything concentrated in this one rando little city actually works quite well for them. Trench warfare and static defenses are bloody affairs and eat lots of ammo, but can be made relatively light in terms of attritioning of tanks/IFVs/APCs assuming one side doesn't actually want to push forward, just hold. Also relatively light on fuel for the defending side. If fighting was everywhere across the entire line Ukraine might be forced to spend their counter thrust stuff on fire fighting.

Of course, if Russia quit now Ukraine would have a big thing to trumpet so they get something either way. Russia has once again trapped itself in a moronic situation.
