How much worse would have the highway of death have been if there was a river crossing involved? are we about to find out?

If russians are retreating they'll leave nothing but rubble and raped children behind. I'd hate to be a civvie in Kherson right now.
Russians already started herding civvies with their military as human shields and we're about to see much worse.

      >Ukraine begins EU joining process

      >Ukraine invites in Western companies who will be delighted to come and build those huge natural gas reserves, pipeline already right there to send it straight into EU network
There. Easy, clear winning victory scenario that they are working towards well. They're about to be able to cut water to crimea and then work down and start shortening their lines and put crimea into HIMARS range. Russia is spent, just throwing meat and WW1-level airpower at Ukraine to try to slow the inevitable and create PR for internal consumption. Russia isn't going to NOOOOOOOK if any of them even work anymore. Russia is now just a stinky zombie corpse. It'll keep shambling on for a while, then fall over and stop.

You're moronic. Kherson matters because it is the only remaining objective of worth that Russia has left from the start of the war. Once Kherson falls, they have nothing left they didn't already have or of any note. Once it is gone, you can start to strangle Crimea more. So yes, Russia gaining it wasn't a big feat, but Russia losing it will be humiliating.

If it was for a practical purpose? I'd say they're taking them to put out fires at ammo dumps or other strongpoints the ukes have been dumping munitions on. On a more improvised level, fire trucks can also hold a fair bit of people and equipment, so they could just be being used to move troops out of the city once they get over the river.
On a moronic yet sadly plausible level, they could also be loaded down with shitloads of loot stripped from Kherson. Fire trucks have strong suspensions and, as mentioned before, plenty of room for heavy equipment.

Yeah, that one actually really stings for those Ukrainian communities. I live in rural New England and have participated in helping raise money and do bonds and such so a town can get a fire truck, or pay to be covered by another town. $200k to $1m is big money when a town is easily <1k people. Everyone does partnerships who has 'em, so multiple towns/villages can contribute together for bigger fires. They are definitely very expensive valuable items and yet super ultra important, building fires are a threat everywhere. Town next door lost one because of an accident cause a building collapse and it really stung, and that's with State and even Federal government to provide backstop.

This is the sort of shitty thing that is going to never get any media attention but will be another little lingering drag for Ukraine. I hope they document everything well so they can sue over it. Russia was reported to have something like $300b in assets in foreign banks that are all frozen. So Ukraine has a sizable pool they can go after internationally. Russia's flagrant breaking of international law actually may not be quite as consequence free as many think.

But all that will still take time and in the meantime people will have to make do.

Its a dog act for sure, heck a large part of my life sometimes seems to be doing volunteer fire fighting assistance driving dozers cutting fire breaks
But there's never enough fire trucks for the worst times here in Australia, cities in particular need a lot of high lift stuff to reach taller buildings and special containment for various types of fires as well which just adds insult to it.
I also have some worries those c**ts will pop the dam further up the river as they have scant regard for anyone or anything at this point and they're out to cause as much damage as possible before scurrying away like the currs they are

          >Fire trucks? Why?
In east Europe fire trucks are robust and highly mobile for rural areas, forests, bogs. Older soviet ZIL trucks are the exact same vehicle military use. Down to self inflating tires etc. So a green paint-job and you got a ready military fuel tanker. Or good mobility platform if you scrap the tank. Or just spares for actual army vehicles.

And with heavy losses i imagine any vehicles might be useful.

Nothing changed since 1945 i guess. When soviets "liberated" Poland it was a gigantic rape/loot fest. Only than it was not washing machines. They killed german refugees (from East Prussia mainly) for hand watches. As for Poles, they looted houses, mostly for faucets, being sure, that when they install it in their housing, they will have running water (know this for a fact, since my great grandfather served in LWP, which was formed in USSR from polish prisoners of the 1939 war and assisted soviets. After a raid, my great grandfathers officer asked the russian officer, why do they need the faucets, and got a reply: to have running water at home.). I sincerely admit, i did not believe it. Grandpa died in 2010. I wish i could apologize to him, for not believing.

Turns out that this is EXACTLY what Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg looks like and will still look like in a century.

Them taking stuff out by truckloads means the process is organized. So it might be the commanders hoping to send it all back home and sell it for a quick ruble on avito or something. Could be considered worth doing when the fuel and labor are free. Cause I'm pretty sure everyone knows how to use a shitter here (or so I used to think at least).

The Russians withdrawing from the western side of the Dnieper doesn't signal defeat or weakness on their part, it is pure common sense and frankly something they should have done a long time ago. Their initial shock and awe campaign fell on its ass, not because the Russian army was weak, but because it was not prepared to find its self deep within hostile enemy territory with the Ukrainians receiving such a high level of military aid from the West. Ever since they have been constantly readjusting to compensate. The bad news for Ukraine is that the Russians are as we speak digging in hard along the South and up to the Seversky Donets river. The Northern part of Luhansk as well as Western Kherson will be abandoned as holding onto them is unrealistic and maintaining a fortified landbridge to Crimea is the number one priority at this point. Ukraine will never be able to crack that nut, especially now given they aren't far off being without a power grid!

Russians are retreating from the south in order to attack Kiev from the north. Their dumb generals will think that the Ukrainian push in the south from the Russian retreat will magically draw away Ukraine northern defenses and will give them a big open to spring an offensive.
