best thing i saw in relation to that was some anon here who genuinely thought himars was the name of the rocket, and that m270 didn't exist. that's the type of "war analyst" from /misc/ we're dealing with. people who haven't even heard of steel rain.

Does someone want to explain why a HIMARS is doing someplace close enough to the front to be spotted by a drone?

that's not unusual or weird, anon. russia is incompetent so in the vast majority of cases they can afford to get close to the front line.

Story I heard was that it suffered some mechanical problem after firing and couldn't move. They were waiting for a recovery vehicle then got spotted by drone

Haven't they sent 39 to Ukraine?
Still hilarious that the ruzzoids claim to have destroyed more than that.

Yes, my bad they were sent over in 4 batches of four initially and then a another announcement of 18 in september '22 which is also when they got Tungsten Rain instead of just unitary warheads.
The final total is 39 including 1 destroyed and 2 damaged and sent back to the US for repair.
For as few as we've sent, they've really proven effective (and others have noticed too it seems, every nation in Europe seems to be trying to buy them).

Think it's 19, not 39. And the turdies celebrate that one was taken out in two years.

Poland with 500 Himars sounds like Russia's worst nightmare. I definitely think we should push Ukraine up to 100 units first though.

Isn't Poland also the maker of the HIMARS truck itself? So basically they are ordering the missile system itself.

Not necessarily, the thing about HIMARS is that it has short range (PrSM has 500 km range minimum and honestly it could probably go a bit further, GMLRS stops at 92-100ish km with ATACMS at like 300 km), and it doesn't have sensors on the warhead. If you can keep an aircraft with a very fast/smart missile on call you can locate the HIMARS unit and kill it before it can run. This is what Russia, somehow, just did, although it doesn't really count since apparently the HIMARS in question was immobile.

Like the USAF would have a field day with Poland if it had 500 HIMARS. Blow up all the known storage depots, intrude into their airspace a bit (only like a minute or twos worth of travel) throw GBU-53s at them (queued by C2, if you're flying F-15Es or F-35s maybe even located by SAR), frick off. You'd see HIMARS getting mulched every day or two.

That's, IMO, why Poland is even being given HIMARS. You'll note that PrSM, the real cutting edge system, is being given to Australia and maybe the UK. Even the USAF would begin to have trouble if Poland could murder anything (INCLUDING SHIPS!!!) within 500 km.

But yeah Russia can't do the above so it'll fricking obliterate them if it ever comes to that.

            >PrSM, the real cutting edge system, is being given to Australia and maybe the UK
Just like with JASSM initially they will refuse but a few years will pass and they will eventually agree. If not, South Korea is developing a 400mm caliber competitor for K239 platform

??????? What are you smoking, why would Poland of all nations try to start shit against anyone? Not to mention they have become one of the most Atlanticist nations in the world over the last couple of years.

Are you fricking moronic, anon? Using Poland as a hypothetical OPFOR is very convenient for this discussion, it's basically Ukraine if Ukraine was richer and had western support + several years to prepare for a war with Russia/Belarus. Using friendly nations as OPFOR in exercises is a pretty well known thing.

As far as I know, the limiting factor is still the amount of GMLRS ammo they're getting. More launchers wouldn't provide much benefit.

Do you think it would be a good idea to create realistic looking decoys that have some explosives inside them, so that when destroyed it looks like a real one was destroyed? Imagine Ukraine leaves ten of these decoy 2.0s to be destroyed by Russia, Russia does get the propaganda victory, but now they'll attack/move troops assuming that one fourth of the Himars fleet has been destroyed.
    Sorry about the off-topic.

The same is ironically true for NATO GBAD. Everyone was more or less discouting all teh wester nSAMs, and now Patriot shows it actually completely fricks over air operations wherever the roving caravan of vatnik tears goes.
And let'S not forget IRIS-T. A fricking German SAM system of all things, that apparently more or less casually deletes whatever flies into range.

Patriot was always god tier when it came to anti-aircraft usage anon. The complaints about it were always either old (like 1991 Iraq SCUD era old) or about its EXPENSE/lack of numbers.

Like put it this way. They decided, early on, that having something that could delete aircraft near it wasn't useful because of NATO/US air superiority, so they went pretty hard into anti TBM specialization since that had the bigger capability gap. It wasn't a matter of "haha our f-16s will deal with the aircraft", it was a matter of "why aren't we using this for the anti-ballistic-missile role? we already have tons of shit that can kill aircraft."
