Yes but that was entirely in Nagorno-Karabakh wasn’t it? Did Azerbaijan ever attack or even threaten to attack Armenia? I don’t understand why the CTSO is on the hook to go to war for members’ foreign territorial claims, that is literally like saying Armenia should have helped defend Crimea from Ukraine it’s just nonsensical and obviously nothing to do with the CTSO.

Look I get it. Armenia got their hands on someone else’s territory and they tried to keep it. That’s cool, there’s no right or wrong in realpolitik. But the owners of the land armed up and took it back — easy come easy go. Blaming Russia for not helping them keep their foreign land claim is ridiculous and really just trying to doge being a weak loser. Like, imagine if Ukraine re-takes Crimea and then Putin blames CTSO nations for failing to come to Crimea’s defense — it would be laughable. So why is this shit being seriously discussed on /k/? I don’t get it.

There's a bit of controversy over Armenia's panhandle. Azerbaijan is really mad that it exists because it isolates their Western exclave. I can't remember if there was any combat in the area in the latest war, but there were concerns over it and being that Azerbaijan is emboldened by recent events, Armenia's got a lot of anxiety that they may lose full sovereignty over the place.

          >That’s cool, there’s no right or wrong in realpolitik.
But you can object to realpolitik itself

Basically Armenia's only hope is the French or someone get them a deal where Azerbaijan's entry to NATO happens at the same time as Armenia's. Armenia is useless to everyone for everything at this point aside from a quasi-strategic position but the final resolution of the NK issue opens a path for potentially having a normal relationship (even if the people mutually fricking hate each other) with Turks on either side of them.

NATO membership at least signals stability and should help head off military issues and provide a basis for normal integration into the European system rather than the ex-Soviet system which looks like it will eventually devolve into just Russia+Belarus. Azerbaijan is a highly desirable member due to energy resources and Caspian access without being a truly Middle Eastern state with the resultant Middle Eastern problems. It's kind of a similar deal of Greece+Turkey during the cold war. Turkey was the country with the much more strategic position but Greece also had to be pulled in at the same time to prevent the Turks from blocking them in the future.

The NK issue was also one of the two main things keeping Azerbaijan's membership status from progressing. The other thing is the political authoritarianism but NATO has always been flexible on that if it means an actually useful member. The third thing was fear of angering Russia too much but that's been out the window since last year.

There is no nation or alliance that will ever militarily support Armenia’s foreign territorial claim, just as there is no one who will militarily support Russia’s claim to Crimea. If you want to grab someone else’s clay you have to be prepared to keep it on your own.

There was a literal war the moment russian main forces in ukraine got wiped out in the opening months of the war.

And that is even despite putin forging
3 rings for land of mongol turned into nation,
one ring for the greek yogurth saucestan,
Two rings for the countries of eternal poor relation,
One ring for his trusted right hand man,
one for the midget in the red brick house
in the land of russia where half the people lack a can
One ring to rule them all, one ring to embarass them,

You're in the Russian Twilight Zone.
This is the Russian playbook, they set up conflicts like this, in a way where it's unclear what is actually going on. So that they can argue nothing happened.

In this case, Russia drew the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
They gave Armenian land to Azerbaijan on purpose to create a conflict. They like to back the weaker side into a corner, and then offer to support them in the conflict.
This creates a situation where both sides depend on Russia.
In this case they gave away Armenian land, and offered Armenia support and weapons to retake it.
Azerbaijan doesn't want to lose that land of course, but they had to shut up because Russia is so much stronger. So they had to pretend they're just fighting the Armenians, and they also had to try to get the favour of the Russians who are in control of the conflict.

The Georgia war was quite similar recently.

The upset to the system here was turkey supporting the azis, who curbstomped the armenians in the war in 2020, 2021 was it? Covid is a bit of a blur tbh. Anyway, about a year or so ago it flared up a second time and the armenians didnt last 24hrs. Both times they wanted russian help, both times russia said lmao, nah.

          Anonymous

Nah, the upset to the system was that in the 1990s Azerbaijan completely flubbed the war then had to deal with entrenched positions on their own de jure territory for 30 years. They had less equipment from the Soviets IIRC and were just more poorly organized. Azerbaijan has 3x the population and oil money. Eventually they built up enough and had a window where the world was distracted then took it, then another window where Russia was distracted then took that to finish the job.

Armenia has been fricked by history but they kind of made their bed on this one. They were offered several deals throughout the three decades they occupied the area that would have been better than what ended up happening but refused because they believed they had a position of strength, but that position was dependent on Russian backing. When that was shown to be worthless they had nothing. Let it be a lesson, quit while you're ahead.

having Russia betray an agreement they made with you and leave you to die/try to kill you themselves is a core part of the glorious Russkiy Mir experience, the Armenians should count themselves lucky to have a time honored tradition from such an exceptional civilization state shared with them like this. Enabling the slaughter of the Christians under their protection by Muslim Asiatic hordes is a holy ritual in Russia.
