Agreed, semi on any military weapons makes every use of full auto a case of war crimes because why use full auto if you can use semi auto?

In what situation would a three round burst be preferable to full-automatic fire?

There's a long history of moronic features added to service rifles because the brass are worried that boots will waste all their ammo.

        >expending your ammo on the enemy faster than he does so to you is how you gain fire superiority
        >military commanders spent countless years trying to stop this

The M16A2 was basically the M16 as if made by comittee.

The M1 Garand could have had removable 20 round magazines but generals said troops would "waste ammo" lmao

morons. Stop getting your information from forgotten weapons videos about different weapons from the ones you are talking about. The 3 round burst feature was the leftovers of Project SALVO, the ACR, and Project SPIW. The goal was to increase hit probability with three rapidly fired aimed shots. As for the M1 Garand box magazines were not used because they just weren't something that was common at the time, almost every rifle in the world used a fixed internal magazine.

Former USMC trigger puller here. Fricking none.

the issue is that burst fire is more like a 'limiter' than a fire mode. MAYBE if any trigger pull resulted in three shots it would have some sort of use but its just stupid the way it is.

When you are shipping conscripts off to Vietnam and you don't want them burning a mag in 3 seconds.
Like a magazine cutoff the point is to stop the untrained wasting ammo.

No moron it has nothing to do with ammunition consumption. Burst wasn't a thing during the Vietnam War. have a nice day.

You are correct, it wasn't introduced until the M16A2, so why? The USSR had already collapsed so the chance of a conscript heavy war was gone.
          Why was it adopted?

Is the US the only country to use 3rd burst?

nah, the three round burst was the hot new thing to have in the 80s. so loads of guns have it, like the FAMAS, SIG 550 and G36

Italians put it in the Beretta 93R too. And the Russians made a 2 round burst AN-94.

Didn't the MP5 have a 3 round burst at one point as well?

God the A2 was a fricking disgrace. How to upgrade A1: Use a better less brittle mix for the polymer bits, replace the triangle handguard with clamshells (yes I know less aesthetic but it is more practical). Stop. That's it. Every other change was either a mistake or a wash.

The rear sight is also a huge improvement.

For a competition target rifle. The A1 sight was simplier, sturdier, and had no problems. The chances of somebody actually fiddling with the drum in the combat conditions in the fly and it improving their aim is dwarfed by somebody fiddling with and then completely fricking it up.
You know, if you care about accuracy so much just save the money in the upgrade program and give more people optics. The Colt 3.2x was kinda shit but still better at range than irons.
