Ruger Security-9 For Older Brother

My older brother only has a .22 pistol and 2 shotguns for home defense. While the shotguns are fine, the pistol won't do. I was thinking the security 9, it has 15 rounds, it's within my 400 max budget, and its hammer fired. I'm looking for input and possible other options Anons

OP here, this is for Christmas, and I'm looking for a 9mm with at least 15 rounds within $400

The Beretta APX is about the same price and a better gun imo

Ok, I can definitely check into that as long as it isn't too much more. What makes it better in your opinion?

        Anonymous

It took me around 400 rounds of ammo to break the security 9 in enough to feed reliably (combination of a stiff recoil spring and rough machining on the feed ramp). Also the takedown method on the security 9 is a bit wonky, however not to big of a deal. It's a decent pistol for the money, but it has some issues that seem to be commonplace amongst owners. I just bought my second APX for 400 dollars and I've had 0 issues with either of them.

Not Op but someone looking for a handgun in the same price range, I agree but you can’t frickin find em at a good price anymore.

If he already has two shotguns for HD why not get him a handgun more suitable for CC?

His job really wouldn't really work well with it with just the things he does. That and it would be better for him to practice with something bigger first

Canik is solid for the money, and they have optic ready models for that budget. Some of them come with decent kits like hard case, back straps, replacement FO, optic plates, holster, etc. People here shit on them because they’re turkshit, but in my opinion they’re definitely on the higher end of $400 price range.

      Anonymous

I like the sound of it coming with a hard case. It's just a personal preference of mine. I can definitely look into it, especially if it's modular like u say. Probably won't go for the optics model unless it's cheap, I'm just trying to get him a starter "big boy" gun that isn't completely crap

polymer80, or just 3d print a glock frame if you already have a printer or want to learn.
you can get all the aftermarket parts for a g17 for less $300 total if you shop around, or place bids on gunbroker. you get to save a bit of money, and he gets a better gun.

Dude 3D printing is fine if YOU want to do it. I'm not handing that to my brother. I want something legally clean so if something does happen, that's one less thing he has to worry about

          >there's nothing illegal about manufacturing your own weapons in the US
Even if that's technically correct, not having to deal with all that bullshit in both a legal and practical sense is easily worth spending a bit extra. In the event that you have to actually use the thing, just having your lawyer explain why it isn't illegal will cost more than what you would have spent just buying a gun normally.

            Anonymous

what do you mean "technically correct?" it's just correct, anon. i consider it everyone's patriotic duty to have guns the glowbois don't know about. if you're in a position where you need a lawyer then your wallet is fricked regardless. and since it's not actually illegal, there's nothing for them to explain really, since they can't charge you with a crime, because you did not commit a crime.

fair enough. for $400 new these days you're looking at something like a taurus. maybe you can find an something like a full-size apx or a full-size canik for $400, but you're going to need to pay attention to gun.deals and gunbroker pretty regularly. if you don't mind used, a used glock is a no-brainer. your best bet might be to just go to a few FFL's near you and check out what they have in stock for your price point.

I never said it was, I just wouldn’t want to be associated with P80 “community”.

        ok then.

          Anonymous

I have thought about Taruas too, I know that they're better than alot of the Fudd speak, but it's not my first choice. And as from where I'm buying, thru a local ffl, the ones around where I live are good to me

            Anonymous

taurus has a so-so reputation because they cut costs on lower qc standards, so sometimes you get lemons. but if you get a good one there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. your local FFL's might have better used pistols in stock for a similar price though, so couldn't hurt to walk in and see what they have.

              Anonymous

That's my general understanding as well on their rep. I am fully willing to go through the used box, it's how I got my carry piece, but given the choice, I'd rather give him something fresh off the rack

a grand power is a 9mm short recoil pistol using a clever lug and rotating barrel system. the end result is a stupid strong lockup able to handle even L7a1 ammo. they have amazing triggers and a fairly low bore axis. the metal on the gun is made from milled steel. mine cost $350 new.
they come in different barrel lengths, grip lengths, and trigger set ups. mine is dao, no safety, and a 3 1/2 lb trigger.

I'm trying to strike up interest to get more holsters/accessories for them.

That sounds pretty cool ngl, my kind if thing with that rotating barrel

Why? .22lr will bounce around in the body hitting almost all vitals.

I want him to have something a bit more sure of a manstopper than just relying on fuddlore. That and he can use real nice hollow points in 9mm

I've got one and put a decent amount of rounds through it. It's a decent gun, haven't had many issues with ammo and a good shooter. You're not going to be blown away but you'll like it. Nothing crazy on the grip so it fits most hands. You can also buy the extended magazines that hold 17 for pretty cheap.

That's good to know about the extended magazines and that it seems to work fairly well, but it's also good to know that there can be some break in issues. It's good to know that, and good to hear about the APX again

its a glock 19 gen 3 with all aftermarket parts for $300. u can get an aftermarket glock trigger and put on it if u really want and still be within budget probably

All the same, I'd rather have something solid for him out of the box. I'd be willing to deal with that if it was mine, but not nessicarily for my brother

Trigger is fine for a 300 dollar gun.
The hard part is that there’s no fricking holsters for it.

make sure to get a brand new dagger. early models had a bad batch of barrels. also many early ones had pin problems. these were both fixed. you might need to replace the mag release with an oem or aftermarket glock one. this was not fixed.

honestly they knocked it out of the park

        >cheaper than most service grade striker 9mm
        >just as reliable as glock or any other striker wonder 9
        >fantastic ergo
        >come with ready to go case, holster, spare backstraps and mag, etc.

and the nicer versions like the salient or executive already come pimped out with flared mag well and better trigger plus rmr cut plates, threaded barrel etc.

they figured out alot of folks like to customize the gun and on an OEM platform they make it super easy

Why not run into a gun range and rent a few handguns? Its not super cheap but you can bring your brother and make an afternoon of it and surprise him with it later.
