SP101 vs LCR for carry? I know the LCR is crazy light and that gives it an edge but I just know I'd hate shooting it.

      Anonymous

I've owned both. The 101 is really heavy compared to the LCR. If you're one to make mods to your guns, the LCR has more available for it. The 101 has a hefty frickin trigger pull (15lbs), compared to the LCR (~7lbs). If you're a beefier guy, the 101 should be fine for hip carrying. I carry on my ankle most days so that's why I got an LCR for the lighter form factor but also lighter trigger pull.

You just need to do more dryfire. It's like anything else physical if you want to be good at it you have to be consistent about exercising it.

        Anonymous

The LCR has a phenomenal trigger for a double action revolver, especially the center fired ones. The rimfires are a little stiffer. The only issue is that the reset is a little long and there's a false reset, but it's easy to get used to.

The 3" makes a great pack gun for doming gators with hardcasts, soft points or fmj .357. I carry a snubby since the largest thing I'll ever encounter is mountain lion these days, but I've always had a special boner for lcrs and j-frames.

      Anonymous

If you're gonna want to pocket carry get the lighter LCR. If you're gonna carry IWB it don't matter. That said I don't see the SP101 having any reason to exist now when Taurus is making solid guns for like half the price in the same form factor(+1 extra shot on .38 only models) and the triggers are better out of the box because no cast frame slop.

      SP101 if .357, LCR if .38
Overall if you aren't shooting magnum loads or being a giant homosexual the LCR is a really awesome little gun, one of the more fun guns I own. Does have the airweight sting to it though.

The recoil is beyond manageable, this weighs like 4 pounds unloaded. I mean, its loud and the recoil is crazy, but nothing nearly as bad as what I had pictured in my head before I bought it.

I considered a chest holster myself, but I really want to get a full leather shoulder holster instead. Seems nobody makes one though. I might have to get a hip holster adn gunbelt so I can shoot cowboy action with full power 460s.

Check out Andrews Custom Leather, they make a shoulder holster called the Springbreak for all different kinds of revolvers and autoloaders, here's their catalog: http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm
If you wanna get gucci, you can also get anything in that catalog made in an exotic type of leather, i.e. elephant, ostrich, alligator, etc.

I'm thinking about a 22lr Ruger LCR as a backup carry gun but that 1.87" barrel worries me. Would it be able to reliably penetrate rib bones and the skull still?

      Anonymous

get a 3" barrel with 60gr Aquila SubSonic. Whether it penetrates the skull or not, it's like being punched with a knuckleduster

I've also been thinking about the LCRx but the extra size kinda defeats the point of it being a backup gun.

Why wouldn’t you get it in 357?

Because .357 out of small guns is for fricking morons who don't understand handgun terminal ballistics or shoot enough to git gud.

          Anonymous

          It’s fricking better than a .22.

            Anonymous

I would argue it's not. I bet I could get off 3 .22s at least in the time it takes you to fire twice and with the soft recoil I'd be more likely to get hits too probably. 6-8 .22lrs to the face in a couple of seconds is plenty persuasive.

              Anonymous

You sound like you have baby hands and can’t handle 357 recoil out of a j-frame. Or are you a woman? Only people I know that carry .22 are girls.

38 special +p carries more energy and velocity by weight than 380 acp from a snubby barrel vs a semi auto like the lcp or p238. It will penetrate fine with minimal recoil.

            Anonymous

A standard velocity hard cast 158gr SWC or 148gr WC will completely penetrate a human torso no problem.

        Anonymous

if you're already min/maxxing for lightest, most reliable carry method, then you'd want the original .38spl+P for lightest version.

The .357 came out years later because it fits the niche of an ultralight carry revolver less, but still has clear advantages.

Kimber has been know to be absolute trash tier firearms for 30 years give or take.

Management, ownership, factory location, and manufacturing changes in the last few years notwithstanding.

            But in all seriousness:

K6 is made from bar stock without any of the MIM parts that COHEN used to destroy Kimber's reputation. Although he is currently running the same train on Sig with absolutely no consequences.

            TL;DR
The K6 (especially DAO models) have an immediate, discernible quality that is both tangible and measurable from manufacture to market. This also differentiates it from market peers.

I was thinking of getting a snubnose for CC, but I'm not sure what kind of round I should be looking at. I mean, if I go with something like 9mm, it doesn't really seem worth it to use a revolver in comparison to a normal subcompact pistol. But when you get into the territory of .38/.357 etc., most concealable revolvers seem to drop their capacity to 5 rounds for whatever reason.
I mean, I get that capacity has never been a strong suite for revolvers, but I can't imagine not having at LEAST 6 rounds - I've even seen some normal sized ones with 7 (or more if you want a .22 plinker), but I've not had a ton of luck finding that in a small enough package to use as a daily carry.

TL;DR you guys got any snubnose CC recs?

A dealer has much longer and thicker grip, grip size is about 90% of CC issues.
Anything else is fine as long as you wear a belt, and don't wear gay pants.
Barrel length doesn't matter as long as it doest go down further than your hip joint, and even then if it does slightly it's not much of a real issue.

Perhaps, the problem with the 26 is its thickness to length ratio is off, so any pressure on the back of the gun makes it want to flip out and wierd shot happens, since the 43x is narrower, and maybe a touch longer it might do better

It's not. The 26 carries better than both the 43X & 17. Anon bought a shitty holster and can't figure out basic physics.

You're a fricking idiot. Light hammers are how competition shooters retain reliable ignition with lower power springs.

                https://revupaction.com/product/revup-action-hammer-kit-firing-pin-in-frame-k-and-l-frame-22-new-style/

Yeah, gamer guns will get you killed. Don't frick with your hammer spring or rebound spring if you are using it for a weapon

You are still gonna have to send it in to S&W to replace the blast shield every so many rounds and the recoil will still be more than a comparable frame made from aluminum or steel. Scandium is a fricking meme.

No you don't you stupid frick

Even from .38spl? Is scandium made of cheese?

No, Anon reads about it on the internet instead of owning or shooting them. The Scandium guns are stronger than aluminum guns by nature, so Anon is a moron. You DO NOT need to replace the blast shield unless it fall off and you lose it. It's literally there to help prevent topstrap erosion which is an issue with ANY revolver with enough rounds.

No you don't. Post it. Timestamp it. Even then, no you don't.

            1. printing is a spectrum and for the most part it doesn't matter

            3. you are fat
            4. they make 2.50" gp100s, you should able to fully conceal that with zero problems

            >3. you are fat
            fat people print less
            >4. they make 2.50" gp100s
gp100 is still fat as frick
go ahead and CC it if you want though, you are right that for the most part printing doesn't matter

Whats wrong with a GP100, about the same size as an L frame smith and people carry those all the time, weight isnt as much of a factor as you think so long as you have a study belt and holster combo. Under a loose shirt it hides perfectly fine. Hell, I have seen people carry N frame smiths with no problem. I want to carry a model 69 eventually in an OWB pancake holster.

you haven't, but I have on an 85 and know a couple guys that have broken their 856 firing pins.

The 85 wasn't too bad to replace a hand since it was in production for so long, but I wasn't paying $80 to for Taurus to replace a $15 part.

The other 856 guys in fairness did get their firing pins replaced in a quick turn around.

Yeah you gotta remember Taurus has been under new management for several years now and has been doing a great job imo. Also 856s are so affordable. It's kind of insane. Before the panic my LGS was selling the black carbon steel model for $199. I paid $250 for my 2" and $350 for my 3". If you want a 3" no one else even comes close to the value. Pic related is kinda old now so I don't know if the prices are as accurate but the differential is probably the same.

Ah my bad. Never seen one in person. Just assumed it was the same as a hammerless. Either way I’ve never understood the desire to minimize the hammer. It’s there for a reason, if you don’t like it used a striker fired.

              Anonymous

Depending on what type of "hammerless" you get you can wiener those too. Start the hammer with the trigger and get your thumb in the gap and put it in single action. A true dao will have a fully internal hammer.

                Anonymous

Some may like that but having a DA only revolver seems so anti revolver to me. I like having the control over the mechanism and the ability to wiener it in order to make a more accurate first shot. Even at close range I’d prefer a tap to shoot trigger.

                Anonymous

You feel that way because you have never put in the work to git gud on the DA trigger. If you did put in the work you'd have confidence in your ability to make hits with the DA trigger.

                Anonymous

not necessarily. the no.2 has an exposed hammer but no locking surface so even if pulled it wont stay wienered.

                Anonymous

Yep. That's a true DAO. But my main point I guess is that some hammerless revolvers get called DAO's even by the manufacturer. But mechanically you can still run them single action with a little bit of work.

              >Either way I’ve never understood the desire to minimize the hammer.

There's no reason for single action on a fighting revolver. Single action is for target work. There's no problem carrying a revolver with a hammer though like some gays claim but there's no DGU scenario where you would benefit from SA.

    You're probably trolling but w/e.

I would love to take you to the range and watch you shoot 200 of my .38spl loads in a single session from my 442. No gloves. Small guns are pros guns for a reason. If you're not a pro you can still do okay but don't gimp yourself with added complications like excessive recoil.

I've fired 150 rounds of federal 158gr .357 out of my snubby lcr in a single trip and it was just fine. Quit being a gargantuan pussy, 38 special +p recoils less than 9mm does. An immediate life and death scenario is not the time to worry about unobtrusive recoil, especially out of a gun that's impossible to limp-wrist f2f.

lol you do you bro. I'd rather shoot faster and not blind myself or blow my ears out if I ever have to use the fricker indoors than have my bullets fly even further out the other side of the target.

Then why buy a heavier and pricier 357 that probably has 1 less round than if it was a .38? Nobody makes a 6 shot 357 snub in a small frame because they can't. You'd buy a shittier carry gun to be able to make fireballs at the range? Weird flex but acceptable.

Maybe you’re new to the whole guns thing, but the market is FULL of j-frame 5 shot 38s, and I’ve never seen a 6 shot j-frame 38. There is no noticeable difference in length or weight between my 38 and 357 j frames, so no reason not to go 357.

I always think about getting a scandium .357mag and just shooting and training mostly with .38spl. I figure it should hold up fine to .38s and be very shootable but still also very carriable walking around with .357. Obviously you couldn't load it up with balls to the wall magnum loads all the time, even the regular steel guns barely take that treatment.

Unless the piece has a 4” barrel, I wouldn’t bother with magnum loads.
You’re not really gonna get much benefit from a magnum out of a barrel shorter than 4”.

You replaced the hammer strut and mainspring?

Did you remember to take the paper clip out of the hole you had to use to compress the spring?

Did you make sure to put the yoke into the hammer correctly?

Do NOT take the lockwork apart. You will need to have everything just so and slave pins to drive through to get it all back into the frame.

You will be doing this a few dozen times.
      (Ask me how I know).

Look closeky at the hammer nose. Is it damaged?
Look closely also at the cylinder chambers...are they dented from some clown dry firing the piece?

You can remove some mass from the hammer to make it hit harder. Buy a replacement hammer and start drilling holes in it or removing other non-crucial bits.

        Anonymous

        Do NOT recommend this.

Force = Mass x Acceleration. You’re not going to get harder strikes with a lightened hammer.

Do NOT remove the hammer. It will be Holy Hell to get it and all the lockwork back up into the frame.

            “Competition shooters”…SMDH!

LOOK at the guy’s piece, you fricking half-wit!

            It’s a Harry-Dickie top break .22 from the 1960s or 70s.

Does that LOOK like a fricking Target Pistol to you, you slobbering moron?

Do you think he’s shooting match grade ammo from it, or is he grabbing a bunch of mass produced rounds from a “carton o’ bullets” he bought at Walmart?

What an absolute Black personl you are.
            Physics much, Brain-Box Boy?

Again: Force = Mass x Acceleration…his problem is light strikes.
You’ve just told him to remove Mass from the hammer…what is gonna happen to the Force of impact upon the primer?

            Math, homie…DO YOU DO IT?

.22 rimfires have notoriously hard primers for design and liability reasons. This is why .22 DA revolvers…like his…have notoriously stiff DA trigger pulls.

I have a Harry-Dickie Model 940…and I too, get light strikes or hard primers.
That’s why I’m asking him these questions and talking him through this.

If anything, he needs a STRONGER mainspring, NOT a lighter hammer.

Wait a minute there, Browning !
You didn’t say a fricking thing about a more powerful mainspring in your first ignorant post:

                >You can remove some mass from the hammer to make it hit harder. Buy a replacement hammer and start drilling holes in it or removing other non-crucial bits.<

or your second fountain of stupidity:

                >You're a fricking idiot. Light hammers are how competition shooters retain reliable ignition with lower power springs.<

…in fact, you’re yammering about LOWER power springs… yeah, Newton, you’re REALLY showing your expertise here.

You obviously have no clue how these hammers WORK.

The mainspring does NOT power the hammer all the way in to strike the primer. The acceleration from the spring stops a millisecond prior, and the actual strike on the primer is from the MOMENTUM of the accelerated Mass of the hammer itself.

That is why the hammer rebounds slightly after striking the primer and withdraws the nose back into the recoil shield.

If you owned a Harry-Dickie, you could clearly see this when you open the cylinder and LOOK at the recoil shield hole where the firing pin passes through.

The firing pin does NOT protrude until the gun is wienered and the trigger releases the hammer.

Holmes can try this himself with his action open.

You have no earthly idea how many times I’ve had my 940 apart, you moron.
When I tell him NOT TO REMOVE the lockwork, I’m speaking from experience.

You’re talking out of your fricking ass.

If he takes a Dremel tool and Bubbas his hammer, and that does NOT work, NOW what does he have to do?

Oh, get another hammer…and how do you replace the hammer on a Harry-Dickie?

By dropping the lockwork out of the frame…which I have REPEATEDLY warned him is a royal PITA.

            Anonymous

No, not really. The miniscule gain on acceleration you get from the same mainspring you lose in the lighter Mass from the Bubba’d hammer.

That MEANS that while you may have 3 Red c**t Hairs’ worth of increased velocity, you lose the momentum from the lost mass…and it’s the momentum that actually causes the hammer nose to impact the primer.
You haven’t GAINED anything…except now you have a Bubba’d hammer on your cool old top break revolver.

Just generally speaking, probably 75% of the time someone talks about taking a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel or a grinding stone to a gun, you might as well lube your ass and shove that Dremel tool…and the gun…as far up your own ass as you can reach for all the good it’s gonna do you when you’re done.

At least the gun might be cleaned and repaired by someone who has a clue afterwards…

I never understood why Ruger didn't just make the whole revolver the same color. I'd've bought a blued GP100 if the hammer and trigger were the same color as the rest of the gun.
Notable exceptions are classically-styled single actions which mix color case hardening and brass with blued and stainless, those aesthetics make sense

If that’s a Model 38, try not to do that at all. The steel frame Model 49 is more forgiving, but not recommended.

As for your deal? You got hosed.
Assuming that it’s an Airweight, you can buy Model 638s NIB for $519 all day long on GunBuckBroker…and that’s WITH The Smitty warranty, (whatever THAT’S worth nowadays).

The Silver steelie colored guns ain’t my bag, personally. I like the blues models, but if it works and it shoots well within 15 yards or so in SA, and prints on a torso target at 5-10 yards in DA,( point-shooting, mah homie), then frick it…be happy.
      You didn’t do too badly.

My Model 38 was gnarly looking when I bought it, which was fine because I had it cerakoted to match the color of my hand.

The idea being that if and when I pull it, it’s that much harder for an observer in a split second to determine that I HAVE anything in my mitts.

The first inkling he has that it’s a gun when is when it goes “POP!” several times and he starts leaking and feeling…”not so fresh”.

Whut. it is indeed a model 38. So no +P?

Nope. Try REAL HARD not to.

You’re not going to really gain anything out of +P loads anyway.

What you have there is a Classic “Get OFF me, Black person!” Belly gun.

The .38 Soecial is a moderately powered round, and ai was serious about 15 yards or so being realistic max combat range.

I carry regular old 158 g wad cutters. hollow points aren’t going to reliably expand below 1100-1200 fps, and at best you MIGHT get high 900s from that 1.9” barrel,

Better to use the gatt to drill nice deep wound channels up under the rib cage and into the pump and air-conditioning system..two r three times.

The classic example of this kind of engagement using a very similar rod, (aColt Cobra), was Jack Ruby ventilating Lee Harvey Patsy in the Dallas PD basement.

One or two shots where it counted, and the li’l homie was Canceled For Christmas…despite being whisked off to the Parkland ER within minutes.

There’s an autopsy photo of LHO taken on the slab showing JooJack’s Hebrew Handiwork on the left side of Lee’s chest.

Good to know. I will probably rarely carry the thing instead of my boring old p365xl anyways. I just think old smiths are cool and I don't own any snub noses.

I usually carry mine in a DeSantis Roscoe cross draw.

              https://www.desantisholster.com/roscoe-cross-draw/

Great for a carjacking response scenario, and since I habitually wear a suit or blazer, it conceals well.

But Hell, just shove it into your coat pocket if you like.
              It WAS designed for that.

Dredge through those crack-smokers’ offerings. Some of them pay shipping. Then you have to just eat the FFL Transfer fee if it’s interstate.

Like I said, Pistolero there at least got to handle and look at and finger-frick the piece BEFORE he plunked down his shekels, so it’s not THAT bad a deal just for the Peace of Mind that he got something that feels and looks right to him.

That's a decent price on the resale market. The old ones in good condition sell for quite a bit for some reason. Personally I'd just buy a new one.

I'm not so familiar with all of Smith's J-frames but that's almost expensive as a new one isn't it? Not that it's a bad gun by any means.

It'a because there's no hillary hole and a lot of people do not like current S&W quality. They will only get more expensive as they get rarer.

I don't get why they keep it. it has to cost money to machine. nobody really wants it, anyone who wants to lock up their gun wont trust it and will use an external one anyway. are there any states that require it?

Pretty sure they sell some without a hole as well but the vast majority have it.

Only a few models of J frame are sold without the locks. They only did this to appease LE agencies who buy them for backup guns.

    > We first saw Mr. Oswald in the Parkland emergency room No. 2 around 11:30 a.m. (CST) Sunday, Nov. 24. At that time, he was unconscious, had no blood pressure, but made agonal respiratory efforts (dying gasps).

"The endotracheal tube was placed (in his throat to aid breathing) by Dr. M.T. Jenkins, chief of anesthesia. Intravenous fluids and blood were started (in the veins).

"There was a gunshot wound entrance over the left lower lateral (lower left rids) chest wall and the bullet could be felt in the subcutaneous tissue (beneath the skin) on the opposite side of the body, over the right lower lateral chest cage.

"It was probable, from his condition, that the bullet had injured the major blood vessels, aorta (main artery from the heart) and vena cava below the diaphragm. Consequently, he was taken immediately to the operating room and through a mid-line abdominal incision, the abdomen was exposed.

"Several liters (a liter is 1.057 quarts) of blood were immediately encountered. Exploration revealed that the bullet had gone from the left to right, injuring the spleen, pancreas, aorta, vena cava, right kidney and right lobe of the liver. The bullet then came to rest in the right chest wall.<

As far as I’ve been able to determine, thes bullet that gakked Oswald was a 158gr LRN out of a two inch Colt barrel.

Not too bad. Jack had skills.

What's the consensus on .22LR /.22 mag revolvers with swappable cylinders? Thinking about getting one for plinking.

I got a used h&r with swappable cylinders. It’s fun for plinking, and the mag cylinder is a nice next step when taking someone shooting for their first time..

they're fun as frick and you won't toss brass all over your property while walking around shooting random stuff. Also decent to teach good handgun fundamentals to first timers or put down the neighbors cat.

It offers utility but you probably won't be using the 22WMR cylinder very often. I wouldn't lose sleep picking up a revolver that only had the 22LR cylinder. That's all I ever shoot through mine.

I hear they are a decent middling option these days. Pic rel is my Rossi 371. I think it was made in the early 2000s but I'm actually quite happy with it considering I got it for dirt cheap with really low expectations.

Mine was kinda dry internally NIB. If you're too pussy to open it up at least shoot some lube into the hammer and trigger slots and work the action a few times. Here's how you disassemble the cylinder for cleaning: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=I6lQprzO1nw

      Godspeed.

Mine too, I sprayed it's every orifice with remoil and worked the action a good 20 times, felt it get smoother each time I worked it.
