Return of Pitched Battles

Does anyone else think that this Kherson counter-offensive feels like a return of the old concept of pitched battle? Is this common nowadays? As wars become too complex, both sides just take the initiative to do one big battle at a time to simplify things up. Zelensky announced it, Russia responded by sending troops there, and big numbers on each side are fighting now.

Do you think the Russians wouldn't have even realized they were being attacked? Without his announcement hours after the start of the attack?

He announced it a long time ago and it might have been a good idea. If Russia moves troops to Kherson and if it's easier for Ukraine to fight those troops when they're in Kherson rather than in the Donbass, it makes sense to get Russia to reinforce Kherson.

im not expert but this makes sense. ukraine could benefit from the larger battle being across the dnieper river. it also looks like it could pin the russian supply routes between ukraine lines and the sea of azov, making it easier to target

No, what you're seeing is a return of pre-motorized warfare. The reason why pitched battles happened at all is not because of muh honor or everybody just wanting to have one battle and call it a day, but because you had a scouting force that was far faster than the entire rest of the army; and so when two armies found each other was either a decision to accept the engagement on the best possible ground for yourself or nope out and be chased off until you found ground more to your liking.

All that changed with motorization. Now suddenly your infantry can keep up with your scouting force, and your heavy cavalry are mobile armored cannons. Better communication means you can coordinate an entire frontline, and industrialization has given you enough manpower to fill that frontline with bodies. Technologies like airplanes, long range artillery, and missiles are just added bonuses that keep encouraging the doctrine to move towards this mobile warfare.

BUT, that's all broken down in Ukraine on both sides. Ukraine doesn't have the tanks, and Russia is a potemkin military. So they devolve back to not necessarily announcing when they'll fight each other, but lobbing what amount to rocks at each other from across the proverbial river - like chimps - until they amass enough force to actually power an offensive attack. It's taken Ukraine months to prepare for even a small push towards Kherson. The lesson here is not what military doctrine will advance towards, but what it will devolve into.

tl;dr it's the Iran-Iraq War all over again.

To the human aspect, their is something terrible and grim about being in war with a neighbor who is too stupid to live and too scared to die.

It's like getting into a knife fight with mexican beat cops while lighting bar's full of tourists on fire from giant money burn pits set up through all of Tijuana. Actually, that's probably one of the better parallels I've seen here, though the foreign aid situation and general global sentiment favored the attacker and not the defender in that one, which is why Saddam gassed civvies and Putin likely won't. It also implies that Putin has some reserve of heavy shock troops squirreled away somewhere (tbh he probably does). Other than that, the parallels are pretty solid.

Libya was the same way once NATO broke Gaddafi's airforce and most of their artillery it turned into a waiting game for the rebels to mass enough troops and for Gaddafi to mass enough replacement equipment to launch another offensive.

Really Libya shows how a war like this could end, the Rebels were stuck in the same general area of the country for months until they gained enough equipment and Gaddafi lost enough equipment for them to make a break through.

It's a return to WW1 style trench warfare. Anyone who watched the battles of Mosul and Aleppo (like the entire Russian MoD for example) knew it would be. The advantage is always going to be to the defender, machine guns, mines, mortars, digging equipment, man-portable guided missiles, etc, it's WW1.2

The Russians clearly knew this going in which is why they've been so clever with their artillery.

        Select one and only one.

Where they've deployed it was what the big brains saw. There was ONE artillery brigade at Kiev and five at Mariupol. Those five were then moved to to Izum front to attack that big Yuke salient, ultimately to good effect. Now it's at Bakmut I think. It's all very methodical, they knew it would be a war of attrition and they know what they're doing.

They Yuke plan was to run an insurgency, but the Russians have so far only taken the Russian speaking bits and pivoted immediately into a hearts and minds campaign. Then they were overly impressed with the idea of combined arms warfare, but as we've seen that's just banging their head against a brick wall, and now of course they've seen the Russian point of view so what is Zalensky begging for? Artillery of course.

If you watched The Great War week by week, nothing about any of this is particularly surprising with two exceptions, both Russian
        1. How very cautious they're being with their capital. At least after the first few weeks.
        2. How quick they've been to accept failure. If you think about how Haig or Foch or Falkenhayn would have acted with the Kiev front in 1916 they would have just kept piling troops in there, where the Russians immediately cut their losses and moved to reinforce their successes.

Meanwhile, and we're not hearing much about yuke casualties at this point, the yukes seem more than happy to Verdun themselves at every opportunity.

I don't know this, but I willing to be money that the Russian defenses around Kherson are full defense in depth. The hidenburg line on steroids. All the yukes are actually doing is feeding meat into the grinder.

    Redback

Its often a case of what you can do militarily is really down to what your troops are capable of doing, in terms of training and going on organised joint scenarios where you figure that out just what works and doesn't in terms of people and equipment. Having to 'wing it' in terms of putting together an taskforce that will be capable of functioning tactically up against their op-for and still meeting their operational targets is really fricking hard.
    However,
Strategically you can get away with a bit more in the big picture of things and while I've never been 'brass' in terms of a military command at that level, I can look at it from the operational level by being a cunning rat frick bastard.

    >I want to fight you on some occupied land
    >do a weigh up of what I've got, what they got
    >figure there's a lot more pro's for me in the Kherson region at the attacker
    >there's a number of cons for the defenders
    >this might be the best place to fight them

What I'd want to do is load up a lot of the enemy in that area (as we're not really working on a specific timeline) and I would attrition them with having to keep all those troops, vehicles and arty fed with some really long supply lines that drag all the way from Crimea. Cut those lines so they're on bread, water and happy thoughts and let them rot for a few weeks in their own shit. They'll be a bit cranky being stuck in the field for weeks on end, being molested by harrying and spoiling attacks, meanwhile we can use that time to-
    >Find weak areas
    >Get our guys operational and tactical shit stowed away before hitting the op-for

So I think thats sort of what they're doing in Kherson, its not a bad place to attack and if Russia sent a lot of dudes there, then its really only straining a lot of its logistics tail having to keep them there.
But without being on the ground or access to any secret stuff its kind of hard to give much more than that speculation

Actually a strange manner of thinking, such a counter-offensive. After shouting from the rooftops about the invasion of Russia, the damage and the suffering, Ukraine now intervenes itself and goes on the attack. Have they learned nothing? Why return evil for evil? Everyone now has land, leave each other alone, stop the war and reconcile with each other as Slavic brothers and sisters.

Things get worse, the 10th Mtn picks up some intel from their guys, there's a meet up happening

Not feeling real great about it, but after some talking to 10th boys, they're relatively confident on delivering enough fire to hold their part of the world alright, but we're sort of in long range patrol rig and not really up to any kind of protracted shit fight. But if we're super annoying for at least an hour we should hold out about that long, but probably have to watch every bullet.

Why are Ukrainians so unreasonable? They could have put a stop to all this back at the end of February. Instead they decide to go on a murder spree and attack Russia. After such betrayal, it is understandable that Russians demand compensation for their damages and injuries.

Russia doesn't have the capability to go on an offensive, and Russia isn't going to abandon their defensive lines for pointless land that they'll never be able to hold.

Unlikely. While assassinations are all part of the game, targeting heads-of-state with military weapons is generally taboo. Also, strongmen like Putin usually keep a lid on much nastier shit. It all depends on whether the West deems getting rid of Putin to be worth the ensuing chaos. Better the devil you know and all that. I honestly think that glowBlack folk would much prefer Putin to stay in power and allow Russia to continue deteriorating after getting repulsed from Ukraine.

Probably as the UK started doing it first and there is diminishing returns from doing the same thing twice. It's unlikely that the US would say anything different anyway.

It does appear like the UK has taken a lead with influence ops and behind the scenes politicking to keep western unity up. As they are doing well at that the US is best served by supporting that effort rather than replicating it.

War Crimes are literally a meme. The victors don't have to worry about it, and if Putin and his entourage were to off themselves after their loss, nothing would come of it. Likely, leaders would go on about the need to 'unite' and forget the past and move on with the future. The same reason we hold back on sanctions is to 'not harm' the Russian people. (Even if they are partially or fully responsible). The Nuremburg trials were a one off that are unlikely to be repeated.

No-one sent border guards to stop the fleeing Midwest farmers with lethal force. No-one confiscated the remaining food from the Dust Bowl and shipped it to Upstate New York. The US poured cash, food, and scientific research into the area immediately, trying desperately to reverse it, and then when they found the cause they fixed it instead of calling the locals homosexuals who deserved to die. Also, and this is a very important also, the US did not send in secret police to depopulate random villages with large numbers of totally naturally-occuring .3 inch embolisms and brain haemorrhages. Nor did they hand select East Coasters to move into the territory vacated by said third of an inch oopsies.

    >Polish analyst Jarosław Wolski claims UKR seems to be using limited forces and aiming for much more limited goals than officially stated.

    "What's with the offensive?

At the moment UKR used at least 4 brigades so around 20 battalions. Perhaps more forces are in action, but I can't see them (OPSEC limits OSINT).

RUS forces on the western bank: 28-32 BTGs

There is an apparent parity of forces, RUS would have to be extremely demoralized or weakened to "break". Additionally RUS has a full army south of the river. That's a powerful force.

What is happening at the moment then? IMHO we're dealing with the URK operation to preempt a planed RUS offensive in the region and which is another part of psychological operation aiming to lower discipline or even induce panic among RUS forces west of Dnieper. Local attacks + massed HIMARS strikes + PSYOPS.

I'd love to be wrong and witness throwing RUS to the other side of Dnieper, but in my estimation chances for that are close to zero. Especially since even a week ago a preparations to a major RUS operation in the region (and in Donbas) could be seen. That might be an explanation for this "offensive" - that being a skillful preemptive strike to force engagement of additional forces on this axis which RUS will then lack elsewhere and/or to change plans for the relocation of the RUS 3rd Army Corp and other units. Either way I advice caution to at least Friday."

The 'it's propaganda' narrative doesn't hold water for a number of reasons:
        1. The average Ukrainian has already made up their mind on the question of Russian occupation. They want them out of their lands. Whether that takes one year or ten years is an irrelevant question, populations can wait centuries. Look at Greece, it still wants Constantinople.
        2. International military observers have some of the best spy satellites in the world and know exactly what is going on. You simply cannot lie to them, and a failed offensive is worse than none at all.
        3. The general public on Twitter has no relevancy on this war whatsoever. Even if a vast majority disapproved and thought Russia should totally annex all of Eastern Europe, they don't get a vote in how the military of Ukraine is run or how much aid NATO sends. Wars are not won by arguments on /k/ and twitter.
        4. The bridges being targeted isn't propaganda, and the attrition the Russians are suffering isn't propaganda either. Ukraine has the manpower glut, not Russia.
        5. Ukraine has gone radio silent. If this was for the propaganda, Ukraine would be livestreaming it.

4 brigades would be around 1500 men for UA, wouldn't it? That's belieavable.
