Getting my first shotgun soon and I'm leaning towards the 870 over the 500 because it seems like there are no major differences between the two and I like the way the 870 looks better. Are there any downsides to the 870 when compared to the 500? Is one easier to work on? Should I buy new or used? What should I look for on either one when buying used?
Tang vs bar safety is really the only major factor. Used is fine, check the basics, swollen barrels, broken shit, rusted chamber. There are a few diamonds in the rough in pawn shops, it's where I've found all my old slam fires for rock bottom prices because "people don't like wood shotguns anymore hyuk hyuk".
I just bought one.
It developed rust in the reciever super fricking fast, faster than blued metal, almost as bad as white metal.
I waxed it using renaissance gun wax (as simply cleaning then oiling it like a blued gun wasn't working) and it has done okay, but I haven't used it much since then.
It's pretty fricking annoying.
Also something with the spring and/or follower seems fricky, I can't figure out exactly what, but it seems slow, like it's weak, or the follower is dragging or something.
Don’t get a new 870, they call them rustintons for a reason. If you absolutely have to get an 870 get an old wing master second hand.
is it just the express models that are shit or is it all new remingtons?
Supposedly they've straightened up after the newest acquisition, but I haven't seen anything concrete on it, the "express" line was the one most affected by QC issues.
dont listen to this anon he broke up with his boyfriend last night and all that banging his head on the bed boards this weekend doesn't help
It's the pro/con trap, you want to seem impartial so your list seems trustworthy. The best way is to have something wrong with both that sound really bad.
Was meant for
everything remington from 2007 to 2020 is shit. 2020 onwards they completely went out of buiness. current production new owner rem hasnt existed long enough to make a call on if its shit or not though early reviews are optimistic.
I've never seen a cracked trigger guard on a 500.
do you wear glasses
Yes.
This. People will swear by their Glock and then turn around and complain about a polymer trigger guard on a 500. Boomer cognitive dissonance
earlier trigger guards tended to do that
ones made past the 80s were strengthened where they would crack
the little tabs that lock it into the receiver were originally a thin bar that would crack at the ends that meet the receiver rather than the trapezoidal shape it is now
Why is the Remington aftermarket “extensive” but the Mossberg “extremely extensive”? Way more stuff is made for the 870
theres 2 parts on the rem 870 that are permanent to the gun and cant be swapped out. the ejector is riveted. the magtube is braised. these are user removable on a mossberg.
Get an SDS Lynx 12ga
>Or and old minty wingmaster
Why does GODchester always get overlooked when it comes to shotguns?
Nice. Those are the best but they haven't made them in forever. The Turkish ones are reliable but no where near as nice. They aren't even close.
I actually like the SXP trigger group more for having a much bigger slide release. I kinda wished I swapped it into my 1300 before selling it.
They're not interchangeable. I own a Defender a 1300 and owned an SXP. They look like they'd swap out but they are ever so different. The change probably has to do with tooling costs, I would assume. So you did not miss out on anything and even luckier you didn't ruin your beautiful 1300.
Like I said, the SXP are reliable. They function well but they feel nothing like the old American ones. You should know as well as when you compare how smooth the actions are or just how they feel in the hand. I sold my SXP. Apparently you did too. That says plenty.
...I'd still take an SXP over a basic Mossberg 500 or Remington though.
Honestly I liked the SXP, but the blued finish and 8 round capacity of the 1300 sold me. What surprised me was that I didn't like the Supernova very much. The action is slow and not very smooth and forend has noticeable rattle.
I've seen a few 120s and 1300s pop up locally as people dust out closets, but that's a rare sight.
Because winchester has only produced turkshit in the last ~10 years.
The old ones are decent, but lack much of an aftermarket.
Because of ignorance, lack of aftermarket, and turkSXP (which are not so bad compared to any other turkshit).
Remington has been garbage for decades now, especially the express. The Mossberg 590a1 is where it's at for modern pump shotguns.
The best ones were the old Winchesters, I'm particularly referencing the Defender here but they don't make them like they used to.
buy a mossberg
rustington is a joke
Brooooooo, I have a 590a1 and hairy toes too!

Thoughts on the gucci/contrarian pump action option?
https://www.theshootingedge.com/custom/firearms-centrefire-shotguns/brand/FABARM
Needlessly heavy for a pump
Fabarm sell well in Europe, very well in France and Russia as it seems. But it is not considered as good as Beretta or Benelli in Italy ; spaghettis tend to say Fabarm is mid-tier. I own a Martial with 24" barrel. It's good. Much better than turkshits, by far, not even the same ranking. Well finished overall and pretty smooth. The STF-12 is well beyond the Martial, it is sold as a tactical shotty. In France, you still find them used tho, as people tend to consider it's "too much" (weight, tactical stuff, etc), while Moss 590a1 is now available again for around 1000 €. If I were in the US, Fabarm would not be my first choice. But it's still good.

Browsing this thread, I started wondering if there even is a pump action shotgun that’s “bad”. I got my grandpa’s old 870 wing master and it might as well be an anvil I don’t see how you could make it not work.
>I started wondering if there even is a pump action shotgun that’s “bad”
Turks somehow managed to do it, it's actually kinda impressive that they managed to make pump guns that are actually garbage. Newer Remington's of course have rust issues but even then that's not the end of the world.
Rem turned to shit by not finishing the guns properly you ended up with rough chambers cause finishing passes are too expensive and rust on new guns by cheaping out on the actual finsh combined with oil on a gun ship out nah frick that.
Other ways to frick up a pump ala turkey is using garbage materials to build those guns.
My 870 Express started having FTF/FTE issues, waiting until shortly after I decided to buy a bunch of accessories and a second barrel for it. What a pile. The SXP is great, but there are definitely shitty Turk pumps.
Get an old 870 that has the original aluminum trigger group. Pay no more than $350 for it. The 870 is great and is my favorite shotgun.
Also look for an 870 at your local gun shows. I can routinely find private sale 870s at gun shows for $300 to $400. No paperwork is the way to go and private sale shotguns are so common there is no reason to actually buy one from a store.
I handled one of the new 870s at my LGS and it actually looked good but for $499 new there is no point when I have seen used 870s from the "good era" go for as low as $170 in the past.
I have a Mossberg 500 in .410 and while it is certainly functional the plastic trigger group and cheap aluminum receiver are simply unnaceptable.
I bought a new 870 express for my first gun back in 2016. I don't know how it differs from the mossberg, but it's pretty easy to disassemble and clean. Fortunately I haven't had any problems with rust on mine.
I shoot left-handed, the wrist safety on the 500 is much more comfortable than snaking my firing hand down around the trigger guard and fricking about on the wrong side of the gun.
I replaced the trigger guard on mine with one I milled and hand-fit out of a chunk of aluminum.
Unless you can find an older Wingmaster or Police Magnum, just buy a Mossberg. Nu-Remington is shit and I had absolutely no idea what had happened to the company until I bought a new 870 five or six years ago and found myself staring at the worlds ugliest, roughest shotgun as I drilled holes in the fricking magazine tube so I could attach an extension.
dont buy new. pawnshops are full of gently used old shotguns for much less than new guns. you csn get a 870 wingmaster from the 70s-80s for less than a new 870 express and have a much much better quality gun
