The only places that applied to was in Northern Mexico where they had a large nomadic native population coupled with a central government that was busy with over a century of constant civil war to help. The US pacified its "wild" west incredibly early. Also i'm assuming you got that moronic take from the wendigoon vid and totally tuned out where the vid is on a book a year AFTER a major war in a freshly annexed area and the crazy shit was not even in America. That'd be like using the chaos following Mao's civil war victory as the bench line of all of Chinas modern history and living conditions

My child of Zeus don't believe that Bones Tomahawk was the norm. Usually, the simple fact that bounty hunter existed and was more or less anyone was enough to reduce the problem of bandits and indian cannibals to dust pretty quick.

The real thing that was a gamechanger was that you could choose to arrest a criminal or killing him. 90% of the time, killing was more simple.

So basically 0.1% of people are murdered, if I am getting it right. 1000 being 1%, 100 being 0.1%. That doesn't feel like a lot but if you imagine a college class of 100 people and you had a 1% chance to get fricking murdered it's pretty nasty. Basically guarantees you know someone who got murdered or you know someone who knows someone who got murdered.

and his weird ass axis scaling

                Anonymous

Let me school you a bit brother. Fitting a strait line on a logarithmic axis is no different than fitting a logarithmic curve on a linear axis, and actually is a legacy technique for determining relationships from the days before computers and numerical analysis.

What this graph implies is that there is a sigmoidal relationship between 0% black, a flat line at the bottom, and 100% black. As soon as you introduce black people into a society, crime explodes until it plateaus at a rate that 100% black societies typically see. Seeing as the fit is quite good compared to other fits you might see while dabbling in the softer sciences, that implies a causality. Of course, more research would be necessary before you could make such a definitive statement.

                It's called log scaling.
Attached is a linear scale. Notice the straight line.

Now an exponential scale. Notice the upward curve because of the positive integer.

                https://i.imgur.com/1ALeGig.png

And now the logarithmic scale. When looking at a log curve it is often helpful to scale the graph in such a way that the line becomes straight.

There's nothing wrong with the scaling, you just don't like the conclusion.

oh frick off, ya wanker. the original graph's axes are about as regular as a septuagenarian with IBS
the distances aren't regular and neither is the numbering

Except it's a log plot and you just don't understand basic math. The distance between the hash marks goes down at a consistent RATE. If you paid attention in math class you might understand what is going on here. The facts are that black people in this country commit crime at a disproportionate rate and gun ownership is not correlated with higher crime. In the other post you made claiming that "red" states have higher crime all of those states are in the south, where there is a higher percentage of black people to other ethnic groups, or have very low populations, making their rates for everything very sensitive. Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska all have populations below 1M so any pertubation will have a significant impact on the rate. If a community of 10 people go 99 years with zero murders then have a single year with 1 murder, they will have a murder rate of 100 per 100,000 over that century. 100 people aren't being murdered each year, and it's not a violent community, it's just very small.

And now the logarithmic scale. When looking at a log curve it is often helpful to scale the graph in such a way that the line becomes straight.

There's nothing wrong with the scaling, you just don't like the conclusion.

Let's be honest, the real problem was that the cops were 67-117 yards away and couldn't even get rounds on target. Both robbers would have went down quite quickly if the cops could actually get rounds on target even if they couldn't penetrate the robber's armor. No armor is going to save you if you're standing out in the open taking fire from someone who can at least reliably put shots somewhere on your body.

The militarization of the Police was already happening for a while. The people telling you it was the North Hollywood shootout are missing the larger context of what was happening in large cities across the United States and what was beginning to happen in rural Southern Border regions.

The North Hollywood shootout was a big deal for two main reasons: It happened in Hollywood and was televised live as it happened nationwide, and it was only a year removed from the '92 LA Riots - which were also televised nationally. So a lot of people who never had to think about what the Police had to face at the time got front row seat to the "What Happens When you Give an Immigrant and a moron a Gun" show. A show that had been playing a lot more in larger metropolitan areas for over a decade but no one cared about. After the Hollywood Shootout and seeing the National Guard have to be called in because they had the firepower to deal with the '92 riots, people had to think about how cops do their jobs more and the tools that they are given to accomplish that compared to what a criminal could use with less effort.

Further compounding this was Police forces in the Southern border states were starting to run into serious issues in combating drug traffickers who had essentially an unlimited budget and had no rules of engagement. In most occasions unless the SWAT guys or a SWAT equivalent were the ones engaging a cartel, the average Sherrif or State Trooper would be outgunned and out matched. The Federal government was not immune to this either mind you. Compare the resources of the DEA in 1980 who were stopping boats occasionally and performing raids with local departments, to 1995 when they were hunting Escobar using AWACs and satellites.

Just like the Military, domestic law enforcement needed to meet or exceed their opposition and the US already had the world's greatest industrial complex so why not ask it to lend its resources to the Homefront.

        Anonymous

        >militarization of the Police
It's more accurate to say the modernization of the police IMO. The police were already intensely militarized. They wore military uniforms (see your pic? it's military.) and used shoot-first tactics. Old school police had no qualms laying lethal ambushes, beating people up at the drop of a hat and had the legal right to shoot anyone who ran for a long time - until a late 1970s supreme court case IIRC.

Their weapons used to be military grade to. But time moved on and the cops' arsenals didn't, so eventually things got to a point where they needed an update.

I love anonymous posting but it sucks when there's a love triangle argument going on
I think things are safer now than they were, but I also think that guns are cool and I don't particularly care how many people are shooting each other with them. I want to also add that comparing gun deaths is stupid without looking at overall homicide rates. No shit people are shooting and killing each other and themselves when they have access to guns. It's easy. That is the point. But is restricting access to firearms actually reducing overall homicide and suicide rates? That is the more important question. Not that I personally care what the answer is because I am willing to sacrifice every single one of you in order to keep punching holes in paper at distance.

with flint tips, hacked by bronze swords and one
of my last deaths.... By shotgun. see pic.
But By Far, The worst death was by a giant
cave bear... Eaten alive and Shitted off a cliff.

i've watched hundreds of police shootings and body armor is basically a non-issue. people love to hype it up because the idea that there's invincible iron man criminals running around that cannot be killed is really scary

being a cowboy was like being a fruit picker, it was a shi, lowly job that people hired literally anyone for. it was the most ethnically diverse job you could find in the west, full of chinese and blacks and yadda yadda. some cool movies, sure, but those were just movies being romantic about it.
its like the "the women behind the moon landing" whatever movie. yes, rooms full of people doing the b***h work for the real mathematicians existed. it was grunt work, they chose black people because they could...pay them less. the movie hilariously missed how shitty of a situation it really was.

I saw one in one of those videos of people doing 150+ on the interstate. Guy’s shifter stopped working so he pulled over and a motorcycle cop stopped to check on him and didn’t notice or mention him not having a plate lol

Cops here have both. If they are on the SWAT team, they might have extra in the truck, something like an MP5 unironically. Also one of the reasons shotguns were so prolific for police, is that the average American kid probably grew up with shotguns in some capacity. Whereas rifles was much more a toss up. There was a time though where a good percentage of 12 year old American boys was already proficient with a shotgun. Also ARs have just become so accessible, cheap, versatile, commonplace, etc, that there's almost no reason not to.

Differences is wealth where smaller. It'll be harder and harder to keep system as US one stable over time and we'll se cops being more and more militarized.
I predict in 30 years cops will drive around in fully armored vehicles, wear full body armor and full auto rifles.

Remember back in the days when free living Americans used to have shoot outs with cops and win? Yeah well they all carry rifles and wear plates now.

No, the narrative is completely broken. Indians misbehaving is not "wild" in any sense of the word.

Looking through the videos it appears to be almost entirely about Indian wars. Comanche, Apache, Cheyenne, Blackfoot, etc. attacking, enslaving, and killing settlers. When gun control advocates say the west was wild they mean that a well armed population was driven mad by the guns in their presence and committed crimes at a greater rate than settled people in the eastern US, and that just isn't true.

If you want to know the real history of gun control in the old west the best example is probably the Wounded Knee Massacre. On December 29, 1890 the US Army 7th Cav tracked down a group of a little over 300 hungry Lakota at Wounded Knee. The soldiers confiscated all of the rifles the Lakota had, then started shooting into the camp. By the end of the "battle" over 300 innocent Lakota were dead, murdered by agents of the state.

I get what you're saying about contemporary political takes on the wild west. But my point is that, gun crimes, or no, it was an incredibly violent and wild place/time in history and whitewashing it as this kumbaya fairytale land is disingenuous and disrespectful to the decedents of the settlers and especially the natives that fought them.

nah, its less violent than anywhere blacks lived in the 70s, 80s, or now. Because the majority of black males in the usa do murder, rape and cannibalism

If it's comparable to the more dangerous cities today then it was pretty wild as a resident of Birmingham Alabama that regularly, and occasionally contributes to, hearing gunshots

I work in corrections and all I get is a M&P and a 870 at work. They get the job done I guess.

When I was a cop (93-03) I was psyched I got selected to be one of the two guys on my squad with a shotgun. Plain Jane 14” 870, wood furniture, bead sight. I remember being on post during the DC sniper and thinking how nice a rifle would be if I’m watching a wood line at 100M+. When I went to a fed agency, we still only had shotguns and select guys who had MP5’s.

turns out when feds only have handguns and criminals have mini-14's and shotguns, you have a bad, bad time.

for historical context, this is why the fbi tried to adopt 10mm. take a look at how many "lethal" hits matix and platt took and kept fighting. not even on any drugs.
