.38 Special is a good cartridge. Best suited for compact revolvers with +P defensive loads, and as practice ammo for .357 Magnum revolvers, pistols, and rifles.
If you have a .357 Magnum rifle and a suitable enquitener, then .38 Special will typically be nice as most loads are subsonic.

It's "weaker" than 9mm despite being bigger unless you get a +P loading.

A std pressure, hard cast, 158gr SWC .38spl will completely penetrate a human torso. That's literally all you can ask of a SD round.

      >bullets at typical handgun velocities must physically touch tissue to damage it as there are no remote wounding effects caused by the temporary cavity exceeding the elasticity of human flesh at these velocities
      >in order to successfully incapacitate a threat via physical damage vital structures must be damaged
      >only rounds with adequate penetration can reach these vital structures
      >shot placement and penetration are the only factors that determine the effectiveness of any given handgun round to cause physical damage to vital structures
      >the only downside to maximizing penetration with bullet selection is over-penetration
      >if you don't care about overpenetration there is no reason to ever use hollowpoints because they limit penetration in exchange for an increase in surface area which is only a theoretically worthwhile exchange if you know for a FACT that expansion will not limit your penetration to unacceptable levels
      >round nose bullets are inferior to bullets with square shoulders and flat meplats in their ability to cut tissue
      >assuming two rounds have equally adequate penetration the better round of the two will be the one you can shoot faster while maintaining accuracy.

Hits count. First hits count most. Carry whatever gun/caliber combo you can make fast accurate hits with. Everything else is marketing bullshit designed to have you paying for overpriced meme ammunition.

How does RN compare to SWC in penetration on large animals? Might be apples and oranges since RN are usually about 132gr...

          Anonymous

RN penetrated great but it sucks because it "slips" through tissue where a WC or SWC with a wide flat meplat and square shoulders will "cut" tissue. You can see this effect on paper by how clean the holes of WC/SWC are compared to RN.

if they are the same weight they'll penetrate about the same, although swc would cut a better hole due to that flat meplat, and go straighter while round nose is more likely to veer off course.

In faster rounds swcs can have better penetration due to cavitation as well but you need decent velocity for that.

Paul Harrell's meat targets debunk that nonsense. Biological flesh does not behave like gelatin. It doesn't snap back into place

Not scientific don't care. Based on the best data we have all handgun calibers .32 and above are statistically equivalent in effectiveness for SD use. Speed and accuracy are what matters. Whatever gun/ammo combo you can shoot fast and accurate is good enough. Practice trumps everything else people argue over and they're usually arguing over it because they don't practice enough and want to feel they have bought an edge. You can't buy competence.

            >a scientifically designed tested medium
Gelatin can tell you that ammo X penetrates 15% more than ammo Y. It does not and was never intended to simulate what the ammo does to flesh. The standard of 12-18 inches in gelatin came from observing that ammo that was effective in real shootouts penetrates about that far in gelatin.

is 100% correct. The only physical property that ballistic gel is density. Human and animal flesh isn't some monolithic gel, it's fibrous, and is made of trillions of fluid filled cells that won't snap back into place like gel when a hole is blasted through it. And Bernie Goetz is the perfect example of why i wouldn't want to use .38 for SD. he shot 4 teenagers and scored no kills.
            >But the goal is to stop, not kill
That's just what you say in court so you don't look like a psycho. Those nogs where able to win the civil suit against him because they were alive to go to court and cry about him being racist to them. Even if your survived unharmed you still failed to fully defend yourself if your attacker is alive. I would never say this if it wasn't true.

Not him, but a factor not considered in the scientific tests is landwhales. If theyre basing penetration results on a "normal" person, they could be gimping people. Xboxhueg fatties obviously have low impulse control. Blacks are notoriously obese. .38spc or 9mm will be fine against gangly hoodblacks, but if Yolanda the Hamplanet gets mad at you paying with cash at a grocery store while her EBT card is broken, a .357 may be the correct answer. That 12-18" penetration in gel wouldnt be enough if the attacker is covered in 12-18" of adipose tissue

Exactly. All it does it measure how far a round penetrates, not the damage it does to flesh. Paul's meat targets are goofy, but tell you more about what bullets do to bodies than gel

Well to be pedantic dead tissue doesn't behave the same way as living tissue, so it's still not a perfect analog and there's something to be said for the consistency that gel testing provides. But as Paul Harrell said himself in one video, there's plenty of people doing jelly tests so we wouldn't gain much from him doing jelly tests in addition.

The meat target does offer more insight into hollow point expansion though. As HPs are much more likely to lose their jacket or not expand as well in the meat target as they do in gel. Again it's still not a fair analog to a living organism, but I'll just hollow point expansion and integrity from the meat target more seriously than that in jelly.

Flesh undergoes many changes post mortem, significantly effecting mechanical properties in terms of strength and elasticity. As does the freezing and thawing process. Studies done by fackler back in the 90s(iirc) on pigs showed that an animal had to be shot within 15 minutes of death to accurately represent wound cavities on a live one. That's to say nothing of the fruit, if you don't understand why that's gonna exaggerate cavitation then you aren't even worth talking to.

It's obviously not perfect, but it's essentially an improvised cadaver test, which may not tell you about stuff like bleeding, but it'll give you a rough idea on how projectiles may behave in similar flesh, as well as to what resistance bones put up for your given gun and load.

It's probably the best kind of test medium you can devise short of scoring a proper cadaver, or testing on a living target, both which present some not easily solved problems.

Sometimes simplicity is what makes a thing great. It works, and it's been working since 1898. +p will bump it up to 9mm levels while being at half pressure, and there's tons of modern hollowpoints that work because of advances in technology. I use Federal Punch 120 grain +p, I've seen tests, it penetrates just fine

I have shot a car quite a bit with .38, 9mm, .308, 5.56 and 12 gauge. Jacketed .38 and hollowpoints goes through windshields fine I have personally seen lead roundnose .38 NOT penetrate windshields. I wanted to see if the Dirty Harry line that he'd "seen .38s bounce off windshields" was true and it was if and only if I shot lead roundnose. Dont remember the grain. It was magtech brand iirc. Fun test in pic related you can actually see the shot that didnt penetrate the windshield

To be fair, I'm looking to penetrate a crackhead, not a car. The fact is the FBI and police used it for decades with great success, hollowpoints have only gotten better, ammo is common, recoil is soft, and reloading is a breeze. I'll be fine if a crackhead gets twitchy, he wont

That's another point. I'm not the cops. If I'm in a car, I'm gonna be playing Gas Gas Gas as I get the fuck out of the fire fight. If I'm getting into a prolonged engagement, something has gone terribly wrong, especially where I live, which is pretty peaceful all things considered. My Mod 36 38 special has more than enough put down to make the average thug, which I very much doubt is gonna be wearing a level III plate, regret fucking with me. It still has more power than 380 auto, and +p loads can be brought up to base 9mm power levels while retaining mild recoil; tldr, the ultimate balance

I meant run the crackhead over, but I guess just fleeing wouldn't need to be defended in a court of law. And yeah, I think .38 Special is a great cartridge for compact revolvers, decent power together with a gun which can't be limpwristed or pushed out of battery, in case it has to be shot really really close.

Is it really a waste to buy a .357 revolver but carry .38 in it? I see people say that but I really like the heavier feel of .357s, especially when it's a 4inch barrel and not a 2inch snubby. I have a 3inch .38 I love but I've rented some bigger .357s and they feel great.

I am a revolver and lever gun enthusiast but I own multiple 9mm handguns for self defense. I enjoy the .38 special and .357 magnum very much but as far as the .38 special goes it's pretty well surpassed by 9mm in just about most measurements you could strive for. It's a wonder as is that the .38 special is still relevant. I love shooting my wheelguns and leverguns and .38 special through them all the same. The cool thing about .38 special to this day is that it's naturally subsonic so it's really quiet in a suppressed lever gun. Mine is basically inaudible.

      Anonymous

Yeah 9mm is a pretty good round to fill the gap between .38 and .357. I have a convertable revolver that has both a .357 and a 9mm cylinder which I quite like. If I wanted a small revolver for pocket carry, I'd probably choose an LCR in 9mm.

        Anonymous

The only gap between .38 and .357 is how far the bullet flies out the other side of the target after completely penetrating it.

          Anonymous

No, .38 SPC suffers the same problem as .380 ACP in that a lot of HP ammo won't reliably expand, or not expand very much. Whereas modern 9mm will expand much more reliably even out of short barrels. Sure if you already had a revolver that could handle .38 +P that's probably be the better option, but if you're buying a revolver IMO you'd be better off getting 9mm if you're not sure you'll use .357.

Also penetration matters more than people think. Not every shot is a perfect frontal shot and bullets deflect off of bone and other material so may not be passing through the shortest distance from someone's chest to there back.

There's also the matter of just because the temporary wound cavity doesn't cause permanent tissue damage, doesn't mean it has zero effect on the target.

            Anonymous

Expansion is a bonus not a requirement. Shot placement and penetration are all that matter.

  33. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

It is fine but no longer the most economical choice. 9x19 shoots people just as dead but the ammo is cheaper and abundant.
.38 is great for reloading, the cases last dozens of reload cycles and the amount of loads is great. You can even load them with BP if you so wish.

All of recorded history. Handgun terminal ballistics is literally settled science. The surface area you gain from expansion is not going to magically turn a bad hot into a good one. And expansion does limit penetration. If you know 100% your load penetrates adequately while also expanding then please feel free to use it. It's a bonus. I only care about knowing 100% my rounds penetration is not gimped in anyway and that I can put my shots rapidly and accurately into vital structures.

ummmm no, but it can if your shot is off by a fraction of an inch. If you're going to shoot non expanding ammo, at least shoot .45 so at least you have a bigger boolet right off the bat, compared to an expanded 9mm.

It's a very weak, slow round, along the same line as .45 acp. The saami pressures for these rounds are in the 15000-21000 psi range, whereas nearly every other common round is around 35000 psi, and some much more. Basically, the volume of the cartridge isn't very well utilized. If you're just plinking, none of this matters. But if you are shooting with a purpose nearly any other cartridge can do it better, whatever your task.

I own a 357 mag but there isn't any point to shooting 38 spl for me since I hand load and can make my bullets do whatever I want them to.

.38 is outdated to shit and is one of the few rounds available today that could fully be considered "obsolete". It offers zero benefit over almost any modern semi-auto handgun cartridge. That being said, a 120ish grain piece of copper and lead moving 800+ FPS is just as deadly now as it was 100 years ago. The capability to put holes in things will always be invaluable regardless of the quality or amount of holes.

Many people will carry a knife on their left side in case they get in a situation where their right hand is busy, and they need a weapon.
I think a 38 spl revolver is the ideal weapon for this use case, over a knife.
    So overall, it’s good

cheap as fuck and plenty powerful.

It's what I mainly reload for my GP100, but I sometimes go hot with .357. Pic related, I love it so much.

Can't base shit on one report. Either get some and test it or get something else. All factory ammo is a crapshoot which is why I carry my own handloads.
