Redpill me on PPA and FTI frigates, pls.

I just don't get it. France and Italy have clearly set a course for the uniformity of their fleets. HORIZON, FREMM, Vulcano, future EPC. And this looks rational, not only for these two, but for Europe as a whole. But with all the progress they have achieved, Italy and France suddenly developed separate frigate designs that are extremely similar in size, armament and capabilities.
Why so? Wouldn't it be more obvious to continue cooperation and design a new ship together?

Hasn't the FTI been enhanced with a second set of 2x8 A50 VLS cells? IIRC they eventually realized the Greek requirement was reasonable, and decided to expand it to French vessels as well.

Too many voices at the table with different needs. If you have that many major partners cooperating the project ends up being too cumbersome.

There is only 12% commonality between french and italian FREMM and italians are making all the money with the FREMM, so the french went back to what they do best: sticking to their own stuff. Any questions?

At 5000+ tons, they're not OPVs, except at most for accounting purposes.
Besides, they've revised their initial plans, and they're not going to produce any ships in gun-only config. All ships will carry SAMs.

Different size, the french navy doesn't have the money and crews to replace their aging LaFayette with bigger units.
And both Naval Group and Ficantieri are doing pretty well exporting their designs, so...

Frogs & Pavarottis care about the Med sea
Ulrich cares about the North Sea
Nigel cares about the North & Med seas

Frogs & Nigels also care about blue water ops across oceans. Neither are that serious about it, but Nigel is more serious than Pierre

They do not ALL want the same boat

Frog here. We're more serious (or at least we want to be) about blue water ops than Med. Our leadership wants to deter China from fucking with our overseas territories in the Pacific. We let Italy deal with Med security.
