99% of people can get away perfectly fine with airshit gear today, because no ones case use is that extreme

different story for load-bearing shit though, because the stitching has to be on point

NTA but if you can find me a source of actual surplus woodland/OCP/flecktarn mechanic's/jump suits I'm all ears. I did a halfass search and found some at sportsman's guide...they were $50 and Mil-Tec. Needs to be thin to not die in the heat and good enough to keep ticks out. I just sewed a jacket and pants together. Works but I do wish it were less shit.

There's literally a bunch of mechanic USGI shit, although over 100 dollars.

Yeesh. I guess I'll stay with my ghetto methods of making them and my one lucky ~$20 find of a USGI M81 mechanic's suit. If I continue making them out of surplus like I just did, it's $10 for top and bottom and some thread. My used sewing machine didn't even cost $100 including a checkup, repair, and oil. Being able to crank them out like this for $10 I can do whatever the hell I need to them with no regret. Tried to thin it out as much as possible including ripping the stitches for all the little pockets and pen holders I'll never use. The pen holders, upper arm zip pockets, name tape, breast pockets, ankle pockets, and elbow/forearm reinforcements can all be removed with no holes to fill. The knee reinforcements are unfortunately tucked into the seam of the pants.

Prices vary, older ones like the DCU/UCP/M81 ones are cheap like
            https://www.ebay.com/itm/285696081134
You can even find plain colored ones too. MultiCam/OCP stuff are the most expensive ones.

$5 top (COAT, ARMY COMBAT UNIFORM - UNISEX), $5 pants (TROUSER, ARMY COMBAT UNIFORM, UNISEX(?)), thread ($5/3 or $5/4 at JoAnn for Gutermann btw), thrift store 80s electric Singer sewing machine ~$12-15, repairs and oil/cleaning ~$40-60. Needs some work to figure out the crotch buttons (no zipper, not the greatest for preventing ticks). Might replace the jacket zipper (zipper is damaged anyways) and run it crotch to neck. Might replace the button on the wrists with velcro or move the button to allow it to go tighter. It's a little weird to step into, but bretty nice. $10 and thread VS $100+ for a real mechanic's suit. You be the judge, but considering my use case is sitting and stomping through thornbushes tearing the shit out of it while recovering game or using them as concealment? I know which I'm choosing.

The worst part is getting it tacked together to start. Then after that sewing around the belt loops; they add quite a couple layers on an already 3-4 layer thick sewing job and my machine does not like that despite it being reasonably powerful. Coat is simply tucked in the pants and sewn with a zigzag stitch to attach them together. Could've gone for a shorter coat to further reduce amount of fabric insulating my body heat but wasn't sure how short I could go before I'd be prevented from reaching upwards or climbing. May thin out the arms in future versions to reduce bagginess. Will wear with neck gaitor, hat, and ear pro to further prevent ticks while hunting coyotes. Found out real quick that M81 bakes you faster than anything else; way too dark. While this is a little light, I can probably tint it with some natural walnut dye which is free.

What you should do is make coveralls with hot weather OCPs.

                >COAT, IMPROVED HOT WEATHER COMBAT UNIFORM vs COAT, ARMY COMBAT UNIFORM - UNISEX
Are they actually thinner? They look pretty similar down to the absurd amount of pockets on the arms increasing the amount of insulation. They don't have the breast pockets, though, which I feel may be the biggest difference. The fiber content is different however; 50/50 nylon/cotton ripstop on what I have vs the 57% nylon 43% cotton on the hot weather improved. Not sure I've ever seen one, though I do have a pile of various jackets to look through.

                Anonymous

The main difference is the material and its purpose. It has a nylon knee reinforcement and its built to make working in hot weather bearable. The main reason to why your m81 coveralls being hot as shit is most likely due to it being nylon/cotton twill than ripstop. Twill fabric techniques tend to make clothes absorb heat and us troops in the grenada campaign complained about the uniform retaining too much heat in the 80s. Nylon/cotton ripstop sort of fix those issues because uts more light weight and breathable. But hot weather uniforms are still better when it comes to working in the heat. You can also try FRACUs, but FRACUs tend to fade/wear more easily compared to regular nyco un.

I'll see what I can get. I was comparing Multicam to Multicam in that previous reply. Haven't gotten a hot day to test it yet; pretty much just finished it 90% of the way. Just waiting on the last 10% detail work like the zippers and cuffs really. It's a rough "prototype" basically. Next one should go smoother. Also, I definitely see the problems about uniforms from the 80s retaining way too much heat; in the summer, M81 BDUs are a fricking killer. The dark green and large amounts of black didn't help either; we have very very clear skies in the summer and often 85-90 degree+ days with no fricking wind. I'm surprised I didn't get heat stroke lol.

                Anonymous

Yea, which is why they switched to nyco ripstop. Ripstop brings in mpre breathability. You can also try the hot weather uniforms from the 90s, but they are 100% cotton, so they are more prone tp ripping.

germanon here, did some testing. Its actually great for deep german forests, menaing dark forests. German forests are very dark so this blends in great, especially on the forest edge its extremely effective. i personally still prefer multicam because i also live around a shitton of open fields and grass but only for deep forests its great.

I like the pattern, though I'm pretty picky on when/where I wear it in public, although I've never been made fun of in it. The parka actually has a real hood unlike most milsurp jackets. I only have a few pieces of surp to go by but it seems like good quality materials, atlhough mine is one of the later ones (the colors differ slightly, I forgot when the change happened). Many places like sportsmansguide just lump things into S, M, L, XL etc but places like Varusteleka or private sellers will list the actual European sizes, if you've averaged sixe this isn't as big of a deal but I'm tall and lanky and not too fat so I tried to get close to my actual ideal size

Is Flecktarn even still a big thing? It was a big thing for a while because you could get the jackets, field shirts, pants, overalls, hats, etc for like $10-20. I even got one of those jackets because they were only $15 and really nice. I haven't seen any at the surplus store in a long time.

The other day I got curious and took 3 items with different patterns out to my backyard. One flecktarn, one M81 woodland and one that looked kinda like Ukr MM14. I set them down in an area with roots mud and some grass so a mix of colors then walked far away. I was surprised that flecktarn did the best followed by woodland. I always thought fleck was too dark but its pretty damn good.

Flecktarn is my goto for the Norwegian mountains above the forest limit. Among heather and marsh and grey rocks the flecktarn is an invisibility cloak.

Flecktarn means Bundeswehr unless it is a civilian copy, and Bundeswehr are masters of windy terrain. I love their parka for its wind resistance. And the foul weather gear is superb for the harshest wind and the nastiest rain. I also have the regular shirt and pants, and they are dead comfy, like well worn jeans.

Hm, now I think abut it I also have the small (35L) and assault (65L) pack in flecktarn. Miltec copies, but hey, the quality is good enough and they are really light weight. Both have no back padding but a plate of foam fixes that and works as sitting plate too. I use the first for things like picking berries and the other for longer day trips.
