Their aviation brigade is the same size as anyone else's CAB. "Air assault" is just cope to cover up the fact that they're just a generic light infantry division now.

Kek, I was on opfor for some of my battalion's (guard unit) air assault guys.
They got dropped off like, maybe 2 or 3 miles south of us, and had us waiting several hours to get hit.
Apparently they got lost in the desert despite being told explicitly where we were in this big clearing. It ended up taking so long that our batt commander and CSM came to hide in the shade we had in our little camp to wait for them with us.
To top it all off, when the last platoon (we had to do this for each one, A-D) finally got there and sluggishly went through their battle drill, their platoon sgt started getting pissed at us for getting up from being dead too quickly, because the ground was hot and full of cacti, but our XO happened to be there and told him to lay off.

      >On September 23, President Eisenhower issued Executive Order 10730, which put the Arkansas National Guard under federal authority, and sent 1,000 U.S. Army troops from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock, to maintain order as Central High School desegregated.
      > On September 25, 1957, the Little Rock Nine attended Central High for their first full day of classes, under the protection of the newly federalized Arkansas National Guard and the 101 Airborne Division, who steadily withdrew as a dwindling number of state soldiers took full control of security by December.

They came and RIP'd my unit in Afghan in 2010 and completely fucked up everything we spent all year working on. The COP we built up from a literal trucks-in-a-circle patrol base to a hesco complex housing 350 troops with a/c and power. Turned the area from dogshit to workable in 13 months. Heard they nearly got overrun a month or 3 after showing up because they showed up, got bored, started intimidating locals and tryna start fights.

This confusion happens because the designation (Airborne, etc) is stuck right to the unit number. A less confusing way to format it would be 101st Division (Airborne), 10th Division (Mountain), or 1st Division (Infantry).

The Airborne, Air Mobile, and Light/Mountain divisions are numbered in the same sequence as Infantry divisions. There's not a 10th or 11th Infantry division, but there is a 10th Mountain and an 11th Airborne.

      Anonymous

Because they trace lineage way the fuck back to the civil war mobilizations where the states were all cranking out raised regiments one after the other, or WWI when states were all cranking out raised regiments one after the other. When WWI came along the numbering system was retained as those units were organized into the modern army. As the army was reorganized over and over again throughout the following decades most of those units were either transferred to reserve or national guard units, or retired. Others stayed on and went through changes to conform to new ideas about military organization. Keeping the honors and lineage of storied units is good for troop morale and public opinion. Units that did famous shit during WWII or had generals who favored them ended up becoming the face of the active army when all the other units were stood down, and the number dwindled over the years as the standing army got smaller and smaller.
So the 100th Infantry Division survives today as a training organization for the Army at Fort Knox, and the 102nd Infantry Division survives as a training organization for the Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood. Meanwhile the 101st gets to be an active division for the permanently standing army. Them's just the breaks.

really? then link me to the 67th airborne. in which ww2 battle did the 67th airborne fight?

Because Airborne is just a variation of Infantry, just as Mountain is also a variation of Infantry. That's why we don't have 10th Infantry but we have 10th Mountain. Cavalry and Armor are separate numbering systems, and they traditionally had far fewer divisions. Infantry went all the way up to the 106th Infantry in WW2.

oh wait, there was a 67th division, but apparently it only existed on paper.

It only exists on paper because they started to stand it up and then never activated it. It was intended to be real, but for some reason never was. There were 7 divisions like that.

A good light infantry unit with Division level air assault capabilities and a bit more experience with air assault operations than arguably anyone else that isn't 10th Mountain. Their CAB is about the same size as everyone else's but they also get rides from 160th and other units in the AO.

Also, reminder that all stories ITT are anecdotes from people who likely never went beyond a Platoon level and have a very small slice of experience with other units.

leadership at 2bde has actually gotten better recently. We swapped out pretty much everyone down to the company level quickly after this last rotation to europe.
I can't speak for everyone, obviously- but from where I'm at, battalion and brigade level has gotten a lot better. On Fridays, the brigade commander will storm around the battalion buildings after 1500 and tell people to go the fuck home and spend time with their families.

I always hear that the BDE commander is going around kicking people out, but he never actually comes by the company office and I still wind up working with my company commander until around 1900 every Friday. I have found life to be around 500% worse since we got back from Europe. Just depends on your company and BN I suppose.
