The fact Russia even has any left is insane. One would assume that the soviets, or 1990s era Russia, would have scrapped them all or sent them to nations that still field them like the US did with Shermans and Pattons.

They saved everything. The T-55s were only actually removed from service after 2008, they fricking used them in Georgia even.
As recently as 2018 they popped up from time to time during exercises to test the capability to mobilize old tanks.

          >5 digit reserve
No they don't. This is from a count taken in October of 2023. They have 3600 tanks. The garages are most likely all empty so that number is final. Pre war outdoor storage was only assessed at 5400, with garages at best holding 1800, but who knows how many were really in there.

            >the garages are most likely all empty
I don't like making absolutes like they're all empty or they're all packed to absolute capacity. Logically though, you'd think the tanks in best condition would get priority on being kept preserved inside garages if available. My guess, uninformed as it may be is that it is, or at least was at the start of the war, somewhere in the middle. The likely hood of them being entirely empty seems low to me, but it also doesn't seem likely that they had another full 1800 tanks in top shape, or at least top shape by late Soviet/modern Russian standards.

I dont think Russia/Soviets scrapped anything, just put things in storage or "decommission" and left somewhere to rot intact. Which I kinda wish the US did. Its so sad to see things get scrapped which could have been just stored somewhere.

storing something in thr boneyard and making sure they work still has an annual cost in check-ups and tune-ups
and the value of holding on to them drops every year as technology progresses and they become less useful in combat, and they would require upgrades to keep up, which can cost as much as building a new tank

so at one point, you have to accept that the physical floor space they take up is more valuable than the tank itself, because they are occupying space that could have gone to a more modern vehicle
and literally just giving them away for 1 dollar and a handshake would be a net benefit

They have enough T-55s to outlast the heat death of the universe I am afraid. They still probably have at least a thousand each of their newer tanks (T-64, T-72, and T-80).

The last T-90 is going to disappear this year at least,

    > but they still have some unknown 5 digit figure in reserves
And what about manpower and logistics?
It’s one thing to lose a rank, but crews are harder and more strenuous to replace. That’s what western vehicles have a greater emphasis on crew survival. Russia didn’t have the massive population demographics the USSR and Tsarist Russia had to squeeze from.
Eventually the population will grow tired of the war and the drain it has on them, such as in the Afghan and Chechen conflicts. Thankfully for many families, their don’t have to grieve as many youth have emigrated from Russia to avoid the conscription and poor economic prospects.

Maybe around 400 pre war. Hard to say how many were functional. Ammo and crews will be an issue. I can't imagine there was much 115mm for the T-62s, even less 100mm

I like how the “attacks” always result in a convoy of vehicles being killed on a road. Does Russia do assaults by driving APCs single-file down a road? Or is it yet another ambush? If it’s an ambush, just call it an ambush. Why is Ukraine so insistent on calling them attacks which were repulsed? Is it because it sounds better, ie, there’s more value in repulsing the enemy vs ambushing them when you’re losing ground in a war? Is it really an attack and that’s just how Russians attack, ie, driving APCs single-file down a road?
