Realistically, can Russia HOLD Severodonetsk and still advance?

It's a huge city. That's going to take a lot of manpower to guard.

They are not using American weapons on Russia in their territory to avoid getting the US in a war. Otherwise they would have won a long time ago. Mean while Russia is somewhat getting slightly more organized because they literally have safe spaces to be in.

So I am saying the Ukrainians are holding back too much and it's going to cost them dearly.

The Russians were forced to go East.

What? They want to turn Mariupol into a resort town? In a sea with too many damned resort towns that is abysmally ugly in the first instance? As if that isn't a gigantic concession they've ruined a valuable industrial asset. Your posturing is meaningless. The Russians don't gain from the land because they have no choice but to destroy everything, and slaughter by conscription the human resources that knew how to utilise the local lands.

It's the same thing Russia did in 1941. Do a fighting retreat while destroying everything of value.

And Russia knows it and they know they can't do anything to stop it except maybe cry "It's so unfair Ukraine just left us rubble to conquer now our new slaves have nowhere to live!"

            Anonymous

Correct. Ukraine should ensure Russia wrecks anything of value, so it gains NOTHING but rubble from areas it takes.

Lock Russia into a glorious Sunk Cost Fallacy.

Also, start the Insurgency proper. Time to attack Russians in their occupied territories. Make nowhere safe for them.

The Ukes are 100km away from Mariupol now. A week ago they were 150km away.

You see how this is going?

Ukrainian command set set the conditions for losing the Severodonetsk-Lysychansk area yesterday. Just as they set the conditions for losing Severodonetsk a month ago.

You see how this is going?

Back in March, when there was a lot of press about the foreign weapons arriving in Ukraine, Ukrainian generals curtly pointed out that their big counter offensive wasn't going to happen until, at least, late June, but more likely early July. Now it's late June, the Russian miliatry is run ragged, concentrated in one area, and although they have managed to adapt against Ukrainian drones, on other fronts that are actually important the drones are still effective.

You see how this is going?

Taking territory is one thing. HOLDING it is another. That takes serious manpower for every area. Manpower Russia is increasingly running low on.

Also, if Russia predictably markets this city thing as a big victory, how the frick can Russia then turn around and say, "Oh wait we're not doing as well as we said. We need General Mobilization."

What are you talking about taking sverodonesk shortens the front line and closes a salient into Russian controlled territory. That makes it easier from them to defend it. Additionally that already had that city surrounded on three sides so the only axis for Ukrainian forces to attack it again would be directly from where they’re retreating. They pose no threat to that city any longer.

So now that Russia seems to be winning, the ressurection of the USSR as a superpower seems to be near again. This opens prospects for a young millenial like me, we were already looking east to China but now we can also look to Great-Russia right next to it. Should I consider learning Russian? I work in IT, what are some good companies there to work for? Sukhoi, Gazprom?

Here's an attempt at a serious take: Russia is in a better position to hold ground than to take it. Ukraine has numeric superiority and, as we have seen, they have been quite good at ambushing tanks and supply trucks on the move. However, they severely lack artillery, air support and tanks of their own, and you need a lot of those things to launch your own offensive. Ukraine has successfully crippled Russia's ability to make any substantial territorial advances, but pushing them out of Donbass is going to be really hard without a big step up in offensive armaments being handed to them by other countries.

I suggest you check the Zolote cauldron and the rapid encirclement of Lysichansk as we speak. The scale is tipping in favour of Russia. Also see

Because Ukraine keeps throwing thousands of troops and dozens of hardware pieces in the Russian meatgrinder for the sake of 'slowing down the advance'. And yeah, they are slowing it down but at the same time significantly depleting their own military of large numbers of their best forces and of lots of scarce hardware.

which nicely explains why the advance is slow, Ukraine is basically throwing in everything they have and still are being defeated. Western weapons? They are meaningfull reinforcements but are not the wunderwaffen /k/ makes out of them. The M777 howitzers have in some cases been simply destroyed, others were broken because the barrel broke down after being overused. CAESARS are a similar story, two apparently were captured and transferred to Russia for research. These systems are not arriving in meaninful numbers and the crashcourses Ukies get means they're probably not used to their max potential. Then there's also reports Ukies are running out of ammunition for artillery.
Even the biggest Ukie shills must admit it doesn't look good for Ukraine.

And the Russians are still advancing but now for Ukraine a significant portion of western supplied artillery is out of operation, far away from any repair facility or simply destroyed because of enemy fire.

You think a conventional war is the only move Ukraine has? Think again. The Insurgency is already beginning.

What chance does Russia have when it's attacked from front AND behind? IEDs will be blowing up Russian vehicles every day of the week, and bombs will be blowing up Russian barracks.

Bring the war right to the invader's bedrooms.

I would assume it’s because unfortunately china exists, and seeing how russia will be selling their own mothers to china for a couple of decades they’re bound to sell some downed drones too.

And the Russians are still advancing but now for Ukraine a significant portion of western supplied artillery is out of operation, far away from any repair facility or simply destroyed because of enemy fire.

Indeed it was. Researching a truck with a bolted on old howitzer, where the crew still have to run around in the open, is a bit like recognising different types of wood. It is not rocket science.
The idea that they would bring these howitzers to Uralvagonzavod for "research" is pathetic.

Ukrainian government has to literally catch and drag randoms kicking and screaming to the frontline.
I believe they still have some intact units left, but majority of recruitment pool are people that don't even want to be there and will surrender at first opportunity. I doubt attacking anything is in the cards for them, unless it will be one of those suicide assaults that they did in Kherson.
Ukraine went through several waves of mobilization already, all while Russia is still using same army group from February.

No, it's not. They've got huge reserves of contractors that they've been sparing, plus, they got more weapons every day, while Russia is getting crippled more and more. RF forces couldn't close the encirclement behind Lysychansk, that's why they went for a much smaller kotel. Now they need to storm Lysychansk, that is a high ground.
