Real combat footage

A video of Finnish volunteers fighting in Ukraine.
This is what your first combat mission would probably look like.

Really captures the SNAFU of the situation. Especially what the combat stress does to your thinking. You have weapon systems which you have not been trained to use. Any plan you had goes out of the window immediately. Your squadmate gets hit within first couple of minutes and your car gets destroyed.

Yeah... forget all those dreams about high-speed-low-drag operational operating.
Once your adrenaline and stress hormone levels peak, all sensible thinking goes out of the window. Even if you are decently military trained soldier, you suddenly can't think straight. You literally can't talk straight but rather communicate on a vocabulary level of Gorilla's "boots-and-banana". You can't even find your way out of farmstead courtyard. You try to blow up a hole into a corrigated steel fence. And most of your time you just end up wandering around trying to find some medivac for your downed pal (who, despite being hit in the sole of his feet, is certain he is going to die). And in the end, you didn't really achieve shit.

This is why previous combat experience is so important and why it makes such a difference. Why rookies get wasted so often. You have to be able to keep your head cool.
Adrenalin is a hell of a drug.

NTA I have a pretty good job and recently bought a house. There's part of me that sometimes wishes I'd done something crazy like that when I was younger, but it would have been stupid. I was in the US Army for a few years with a medical MOS and helped patch up guys that got fricked up by IEDs. It's not really worth risking a good life for unless it's for a cause you really believe in or something you want to do deep down. Dropping everything and fighting in a conflict that doesn't threaten your own family and where you probably won't be reimbursed well or have medical covered isn't exactly smart. But for some people it may be worth it because they've got a certain mindset where they would rather do that then live a normal life.

Not him either, but my skillset doesn't line up with their current needs. If they ever get to the point where they can make use of a civilian fixed-wing pilot with no military background I'll definitely look into doing it, especially because I've almost got Ukrainian background. (Just over the border into Slovakia but we're part of a group that's on both sides of the border and my mom's family church was half Ukrainians and stuff.)

It's quite similar so if you're already a pro at that most tank systems and especially tank recovery systems will be familiar. You could for example work on repair crews turning damaged equipment to service. I assume you weld and can run a cutting torch etc.

I'm a cripple or I'd gleefully go to support their aircraft maintenance or work on any ground system.

Realistically if you show up in Ukraine, learn a bit of the language, make friends with people with military connections, and just generally put in a bit of effort, you'll find a way to enlist. Everything is so ad hoc that if you're a warm body who shows initiative somebody will be happy to have you.

How is that any different from the 45-year-old civvies they're drafting? If you're a fat, mentally ill hypochondriac moron, yeah, don't go, but the average young man is about the same quality as what they're pulling off the streets. Really the main barrier by far for foreigners is that they don't speak Ukrainian or Russian.

Those people are fighting in and for their homeland, so even if they're moronic, they have something somewhat tangible motivating them. A pussy foreigner whose mentality is that it "looks fun" could end up being more of an annoyance.

The why is not exactly the point. If the person was actually a killing machine terminator in it for the fun, sure, but I highly doubt that. You'll just get there, realize things aren't as cool and bad ass as they seemed, cry like a little b***h and cause issues for your mates.

Okay, well, tangibly motivate in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up first. Honestly it means frick-all, fighting for a cause you believe in won't stop you panicking when everything around you starts exploding. But yes I would not recommending coming with unrealistic expectations.

Wrong, you only need military experience to join. You can show up on the Legion border box (Yes literally a box) at the polish border and if you arent a completely autistic moron and can speak english, they take you. They have three units, one support, one unit for people with military experience and the special forces wing under the command of GUR which doing recon.

If you dont have real combat experience like 99,99% percent of ex-soldier have, you will put into the second unit. This unit dont see so much action like the third but still doing stuff. The sf unit directly recruits from the second unit if they need people. So everyone want of course to get into the third

Some people said they now start to train the new people with military exp a few weeks but Idk we have zero information and most of it is just "x said"

I wasn't bragging, I was answering the question with the answer I keep hearing from non-Finns, as for what happens on the video, first time in combat, in a unit that is very different from what they are used to & doing things they almost certainly didn't train for. The owner of the YT channel is an armoured jäger working as a sniper/spotter for a captured heavy MG, with none of the supporting elements he'd have in a Finnish mechanized battle group, it's going to take some time for him to adjust.

            Anonymous

Apparently the Finnish training is very suitable to Ukrainian environment; more suitable than the training Ukraininans have had.
Good skills in camouflage, fighting positions, small unit tactics, spreading etc. Also good morale.
Yanks are used to air superiority, but actually know how to deal in combat situations (if military experience) and know how to keep their cool.

Yanks without combat experience seem to enjoy war crimes too much and have too short a temper.

Doesn't shock me that much if they're ones with military experience, they'd be used to working with limited resources, a lot have actual combat experience against cartels/commie rebels/etc., and I could see how jungle experience might be useful in the warmer seasons in Ukraine judging by all the overgrowth I've seen in videos. Also, a lot might be pretty motivated because the Russians fricked with LatAm a ton during the cold war and a lot of people lost family/friends to commie rebels and stuff, actually one of my best friends is a Salvadorean guy whose family was middle/upper class down there until the commies murdered his dad and his mom fled the country with him.

the rules for Americans may be a bit different than for Europeans as Europeans can pretty much just travel to the Ukrainian border using money found under couch cushions while majority of Americans (especially Americans showing up at the Ukrainian embassy/consulate in the States to volunteer-) would need plane tickets to get to Ukraine, so Ukrainians probably want to make sure any Americans they get tickets to/get put on an American military transport to Europe are worth the cost.

        jabroni (plural jabronis)

(professional wrestling slang) a performer whose primary role is to lose to established talent.
        Synonym: jobber

Iron Sheik used the term first, and was part of his lexicon. To him a “jabroni” was a “jobber,” or “enhancement talent.”

Mentions this was in September (during the Kharkiv offensive) and they mention Kupiansk at 7:16, so this was likely during the press to Kupiansk after the ru lines at Balakliia/Chkalovske collapsed. The CivDiv video was in Petropavlivka, not far from Kupiansk, and was reclaimed in early October. Likely he was part of both phases of the Kharkiv offensive.

This guy also posted greentext story in ylilauta about the firefight that will happen in CivDiv's next video back in autumn. I couldnt find it now, but the spetznaz will get slaughtered to a man for 1 dead ukr squadleader, 1 gravely wounded foreign volunteer and multiple lightly wounded. It's a pro wrestling term used as a synonym for "jobber," which is a wrestler who frequently loses to make his opponents look better. Often used backstage by wrestlers in the WWF, WCW, and ECW, but it really took off for the public when the Iron Sheik and The Rock used it in their promos and insults.

Imagine being shot in the groin or femur area, on a battlefield that’s far from emergency medical facilities, and everyone’s busy trying to secure the area. Is this when morphine cones in handy?

I am not sure actually. The pain is going to be intense but there are good chances of massive bleedings and if you get morphine it's not going to help your heart keep beating.

All of his "combat footage" is pretty boring. Mostly just running with maybe some shell impacts off in the distance. Not really what most would think of as combat footage, however he advertises it as such. He's also said pretty publicly that he started doing military volunteer work as a way to satisfy his ego and won't be fighting in Ukraine anymore because he doesn't like getting shelled. Personally I don't fault him for not wanting to die to a shell because a corrupt or inept commander put him in a really dumb place. I do however think his videos are pretty much mostly click bait.

Happens all the time in war. Probably happens multiple times a day in Ukraine.

      Anonymous

It's more of how pointless it was.
They could have completely avoided the firefight

This guy also posted greentext story in ylilauta about the firefight that will happen in CivDiv's next video back in autumn. I couldnt find it now, but the spetznaz will get slaughtered to a man for 1 dead ukr squadleader, 1 gravely wounded foreign volunteer and multiple lightly wounded. (If this is the same firefight that is),

      >1 dead ukr squadleader
      He was Irish, I think.

        Anonymous

You don't know that. Maybe he pretends to surrender and pulls out a sidearm. Maybe while you're taking him into custody his buddy pops out and shoots you both. And you have to make that decision while you're overdosing on adrenaline. It's really risky to surrender/accept a surrender in an active combat zone.

Because they were ordered to go against a BMP with the kord, presumably because there was no AT available.

They were told to get in a position to defend against infantry and to hold overwatch.
The AT guys had no line of sight to the BMP.
The machine gunner opened fire on the BMP for some fricking reason and got hit in the foot.
Despite this the BMP got spooked and retreated.

Finn mortarman here, when the evacc came my thoughts kept going to "that unit needs some mortars doing some landscaping in the ruskis' general direction to keep the enemy's heads down", even just two 81/82mm firing line-of-sight would do wonders if they have the range to the enemy positions (trust me, you don't want to take potshots at couple 81/82mm mortars if they have you ranged & are firing at the 18 rounds in a minute -rate FDF expects (not constantly, but when ordered to fill the target area with tiny pieces of high-velocity cast iron for a minute, 18 rounds per tube in exactly one minute it is))

Haven't watched the vid yet but since this is Petropavlivka during the Kharkiv/Kupyans'k Offensive it will probably go well with these videos from Civ Div's friend who fought in Petropavlivka as well. They even took out a BMP-2M so I'm wondering if it's the same BMP as the Finns ran into.
Part 1: https://youtu.be/Rpx7TWc58PI They take out the BMP
Part 2: https://youtu.be/MzfgEVwsyOQ They move up to it
Part 3: https://youtu.be/pOiGJSf5RPE They find and nade the Russian Spetsnaz the BMP moved up to support
Apparently there're gonna be more parts.

      >I'm wondering if it's the same BMP as the Finns ran into.
The pickup truck that evacuates the wounded finn looks like the same pickup they grab more rockets from in the civ div video.
My rough idea for a timeline:
      >BMP shows up
      >Finn shoot at it with fiddy
      >BMP shoots finn and then gets spooked and starts falling back
      >NLAW chad gets the angle
      >BMP goes kaboom
      >They keep rocketing the BMP while the finns get lost
      >Rocket guys get more rockets from the pickup
      >Pickup goes looking for the finns
      >Eventually finds them and GTFOs
No idea if it fits timewise between the two videos

I don't think the Finn took a round from the BMP to his foot. Shrapnel maybe? Or small arms fire from the spetsnaz who were with the BMP

would 30mm cannon take the foot off? depending on where it hit and distance but they're also taking small arms fire. Before Finnbro pulls out a bullet hits the road infront of him and he mentions being pinned down. I assumed that the WIA was hit by small arms fire by dismounts or Vatnigs riding on the BMP

they were calling for a range finder, NLAW fires a guided missile so aiming at the right spot is less important than with the dumb rockets fired from RPGs & an optical sight on the launcher doesn't do much if your range estimation is wrong

Maybe the BMP crew though that they were getting lit up by 12.7s and decided to frick right off because, 12.7 can pen the back and sides of BMPs at close range (afaik front is only rated for 14.5 mm afaik) and the fact that infantry were lighting them up meant that they got overrun and could take AT rocket to the fuel tank any second at that point.

semi-related but FDF trains a air self-defence doctrine where when ordered the entire unit loads tracers, switches to full auto and just dumps on the enemy aircraft for the sole purpose of causing it to abort & possibly pull up to an altitude where proper air defences can shoot it down, the Americans I have told about this have been somewhat dismissive, some because "muh American air supremacy" & others because "muh American air-to-ground"

It's one thing to have a stumbling grasp of English, the way many of the Latin American immigrants I've lived around recently do. It's another to speak it capably, with little to no grammatical eccentricity or awkward phrasing; which is what this Finn did.
