    Well, one of the main points behind using a railgun is to eliminate the logistics and storage of gunpowder and to use electricity instead. Hell, that's not the "main point", it's the entire point really.

    I don't think the "10x powder" physics would work like you think they would. The powder needs to combust and it's not gonna combust as efficiently with 10x less space to do so. You can give it more space, but then you reduce the pressure and havin more pressure was the point to begin with.

          Gas pressure? No. But the erosion from a really goddamn strong electric arc? Not to mention having to withstand the same magnetic forces which accellerate the projectile? Yeah. Railguns shit the bed after just a handful of shots. Look it up.

          The wear can be solved by making the rail more magnetically efficient which allows to have lower voltage, 48 would be nice and safe but if needed 120 could be used. This lower voltage prevents arching which is the mayor source of west of current shitty rail gun designs.

          What does that even mean? Nevermind the fact that the voltages will always be high because that's the only way to get high currents, and high currents are required to get meaningful power out of a rail gun.

      The rapid discharge produces an assload of heat though. You may not get wear from the projectile but it's still hard on the equipment.

      Its not the barrel its the rail.
      The armature is in contact contact with the 2 rails and even for a fraction of a second when they are in contact you still melt metal.

    BTW I’m curious where this bad info about railguns come from? Is it old video games showing slugs being suspended in a electromagnetic field and squeezed out? Then they just extrapolate that imagery into reality in typical noguns fashion?

      yeah, as a teenager in the early 00's i thought it would be like mag-lev trains with the projectile suspended between magnetic fields, never making contact with anything. but then it was like 2013 or whenever the navy said they kept melting i had to actually look into it

    All right you might not believe but I do have a design for a rail gun that will actually work, will impart spin on the projectile and will reach energies similar to a 9mm in a carbine length (this because of limitations with capacitor technology) and will wear out just barely slower than a regular barrel but can be replated with nickel.

    I’m truly building this thing and you guys will see it soon somewhere most likely on YouTube.

    Rail gun development was basically dropped entierly in the US.

    Last year's budget the military asked for $0 of funding for the railgun project, congress forced them to take $10M in funding for the program and explain why they want to get rid of it.

    But $10M barely keeps the lights on, so it's not any sort of real investment when they had been spending dozens and hundreds of millions in R&D in the decade previous.

    Why didn't we just put a sleeve that can take the wear and tear inside the actual barrel? I don't imagine we're spinning railgun shells if we're using approximately the same barrel as a smoothbore tank cannon

    A true rail gun from a physics effectiveness would hold the projectile in magnetic levitation, in a low vacuum whilst it accelerates. Do handheld rail guns pull this off yet?

    Because you can't make a barrel thick enough or get enough powder combusting to be equivalent to what an efficient rail gun, mass drive, or coil gun could offer.

    With a coil gun your ammo can be way smaller all and lighter. Forget worrying about armor, you projectile can get accelerated to Mach 7.

    No smoke from shooting to give away your position. Much less noise. The energies proposed aren't feasible with a gun. Rocket assist can get you some of the way there though, but coil guns and mass drivers have been proposed as a way to accelerate shit to escape velocity and get it into space at low cost. No cannon is doing that.

    Railguns sound cool until you realize that we will never get power armor if we perfect these first. The hardened 3mm projectile going 12,000 fps is going to zip right through the power armor.

    That's why I hope we fix the battery issue for coil guns before the other issues.
