QTDDTOT - Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

Who the frick has Alpenflage in stock? Need some for fall hunting, pants specifically, and not for moron tier prices. If it's a place that has other items that would be useful (surplus), that would be nice. SG doesn't have it.

I remember when I was window shopping some german camo pants but they didn't have my size.

As to answer your question, did you check Amazon?

You know, I haven't. Could use a prime account too to (hopefully) get better shipping or whatever that does. Often forget that some people sell through there but the prices are often higher IIRC.

          >but anon muh prices blah blah scarcity or better materials or whatever
There's no reason for surplus to cost new clothes prices, especially used surplus. If I don't like a price, I don't buy it. Simple as.

Oh and a place that sells British DPM jackets and pants would be great. Love my Dutch DPM and British DPM jacket but the waterproof stuff would be better for when it rains on some of these colder days. IIRC the jacket was $35-45 and the pants were ~$30-35 on SG but they're out. I had a chance to get them but I forgot to buy them; whoops. Kills me as I think they might've even had the backpack. Would've been amazing for hunting.

They probably split a single lot of government surplus sold by someone else or the government itself. That, or it's them all agreeing to slowly let out the finite number of stock of this stuff to keep prices high. It's a better business model.

        >Is there some goblin who goes around to every internet surp store selling them woobies and french fleece jackets all at once for reasons beyond our comprehension, it's weird
Surplus is mostly sold in the form of massive batches released at a time from government warehouses via auction.
Investors, surplus dealers and other brokers compete in these bids to get the big bulk lots of random assorted shit, some people just make a business out of sorting those containers of random junk into organized piles and sell those piles to people who will then sell the individual items.

Almost all surplus items enter the market in enormous bulk blobs and then disseminate to individual retailers and eventually customers through a whole network of third parties.

Is it normal for a loaded magazine to rattle when you shake it? Is there any downside beyond a potential stealth debuff? I am getting it with all my AK mags, both metal and polymer, as well as my 40rd AR mag, and so far I haven't noticed problems at all in loading, cycling, anything other than the noise like death maracas.

      Anonymous

You're not mentioning a lot of factors here, but I'll try to be as thorough as possible.
      >Plastic AKM magazine at full load has very soft rattle when shaken full force in hand
      >Plastic AKM magazine at full load has almost no rattle when shaken full force when locked into the rifle (other parts of the rifle are louder)
      >Metal AKM magazine at full load has moderate rattle when shaken full force in hand
      >Metal AKM magazine at half load has moderate rattle when shaken full force in hand

30rd surplus AR mags do, mostly spring IIRC. 20rd don't as much or not at all. Tested a 30rd Romy AK mag and somehow there's one round loose enough to rattle if you shake it hard enough, but sling swivels will give you away at much slower and gentler shaking (or shouldering), so find a way to shut them up like a piece of bicycle inner tube (also works on rear sling swivels when put over an AR buffer tube). 10/22 BX-1 mags rattle like a god damn box of rocks which is why I recommend BX-15s for hunting.

      Is Rothco bullshit

Depends what you mean. Is it surplus? Frick no. Is it shitty? Depends. Personally I only buy it when I'm going to do something stupid I wouldn't want to do to real surplus. Or said item in surplus is rare and I want to wear it or modify it (and Rothco is cheaper), I'd get it. I know a guy who has an ALICE pack (real surplus) and bought Rothco straps to replace them since they're hard to find and you could barely tell. You're not going to get surplus prices but their stuff isn't total junk. I'm sure some of it is bad, but other than people making fun of you for buying Rothco BDUs instead of real M81 BDUs for cheaper or whatever they're fine.

There's been times their boonie caps fooled me before I saw the tag. Their quality isn't bad and comparable to surplus. Hell, may be better than some surplus. Been realizing my M81 BDU sleeves are either different sizes and/or the button spacing is different from sleeve to sleeve on the same shirt. One rolls up fine, the other is so large it falls down. One flaps in the wind, the other stays still. I don't see how Rothco could do any worse.

Are you talking about the mag cap side thing with a slot cut in it or the actual follower? If its the thing you need to pry it out by sticking sonething in the slot. If its the follower it should slide out after the spings removed. If its really a b***h you unscrew the whole magtube from the reciver like you would on a 500. This requires a strap wrench and a torch.

Are gorkas comfy? I really want one but because the vatniks sperged out the only readily available options are eye wateringly expensive examples from the US. They're decent but keep in mind that you're buying something which was designed during the cold war for a peasant army.

It's windproof, and even that is very much questionable when you have the one with buttons from top to bottom of the jacket. It's definitely not warm, by no means. It only keeps the wind away from you. You'd really want to wear something warm underneath it, and then it'll work. Even as a fanboy of it I do have to tell you though, that it's really not the best option, as stated above it's literally a windproof for poors made out of tent fabric. If you just want an aesthetic part, go for it, it's good. If you want a dependable and reliable piece of gear, that's not it Anon, and it's absolutely not waterproof without being impregnated, and even afterwards it struggles.
It is, however, stupidly comfy in moderate cold with some warm pants and british surplus sweater underneath it. Once again though, absolutely not the best and I'd probably get something goretex if I had to prep for very bad weather

I've been looking at Colt 1911s.
So far the most realistic option for my budget looks to be their 1911 Classic in .45 acp, given that it's the cheapest of the GI models at $900, but I noticed the Royal Blue they have while looking around. Thing is very sexy. Is it worth the $1500 it's listed at? How often would one expect to find these used and thus going for less?
Also yes, the 1911 I buy does need to be as close to GI/Govt Model as possible. I know I'm missing out on rails for gadgets and the like, which I'm fine with because I don't put those on my pistols anyway.
Also if there's any OOP/legacy Colt 1911s that I might find used, what's good and what would they reasonably be worth?

      Anonymous

Colt has been manufacturing 1911s in one form or another for the last hundred years, so there's a pretty good chance you can find a used one for much less than $1500 but only you can be the judge of what you're willing to pay for it in whatever condition you might find it in.
Check your local pawn stores first, then go to your local gun stores second and ask around. I would not be surprised if the clerks are aware of someone who has one that's looking to sell it. Lastly, you could try a gun show. They are pretty worthless nowadays but you might just find a used one that's being sold for a reasonable price.
With all of that said, A real deal Colt is more of a collectors piece than a gun you intend to beat to hell doing drills or competition shooting,. A well cared for Colt never depreciates in value and everyone knows this. That doesn't make them a range toy, but it does make everyone treat them as such.

        Anonymous

        >Check your local pawn stores first, then go to your local gun stores second
I've had a somewhat poor experience with pawn shops around here. Lot of prices jacked up to scalper levels, to the point that seeking a new item is probably more worth it than them.
However, I do frequent a place that operates as both, pawned guns go to the used section of the LGS that's in the same building. Between that and the guns they get on auction, I guess they're still my best bet and should be checked first. After them, then I have a couple more local gun stores I can check.
        >A real deal Colt is more of a collectors piece than a gun you intend to beat to hell doing drills or competition shooting
To be honest, I was planning to use it as a carry gun as well as for general range use, I don't really compete or do drills. I guess that in that case the cheapest functional model is best, but I'm ok paying extra for what the Royal Blue is, both in quality and in pure vanity. May not be entirely a choice of the brain, but the heart wants what it wants. As it is, a big reason that I want the GI model is because I want to be able to put it in my grandpa's old army holster, a function that I would have more use for than a laser, light, or optic on it considering that I just don't work that way.
I suppose that since the value never really deprecates, a used model in any good, usable state is still going to cost nearly the same as a new one, yes? In that case, I may as well spring for a new one, right? I'd probably wait another pay period for that, so I wouldn't get it until the middle or end of next month, but I can wait that long.
Well, thanks. Guess I've got some waiting to do now.

          >I've had a somewhat poor experience with pawn shops around here. Lot of prices jacked up to scalper levels, to the point that seeking a new item is probably more worth it than them.
That's not uncommon. Pawn shops do not expect customers to pay the window price, they expect them to haggle. A lot of younger pawn shop clerks just don't care though, they don't give a shit if the place makes any money or not so they might get offended when you start trying to negotiate.
          >To be honest, I was planning to use it as a carry gun as well as for general range use, I don't really compete or do drills.
Carrying a 1911 isn't the most comfortable thing to do. I'd really recommend against carrying a $1500 gun, based purely on the fact that this is going to be a gun that means something to you and if by some unfortunate act of cruelty you're forced to use it to defend yourself then it'll be confiscated by the police as evidence for an unknown period of time (months to years)
          >I suppose that since the value never really deprecates, a used model in any good, usable state is still going to cost nearly the same as a new one, yes?
There are some guys who bought their Colt and stuck it straight into a display case, those are the kinds of guys who can expect to get top dollar for their "used" gun.
Holster wear, slide wear, weakened springs, rust, pitting, etc are all things that leave the gun in a "good" functioning state but easily depreciate the price.

I just went through my first gun courses to get my license, I told them I'm left eye dominant (I do archery) they gave me a left handed bolt action to shoot with, I did fine but I'm (mostly) right handed. I don't know enough about guns to know what I can do about this or what this "cross dominance" even means, where can I find reliable information about this particular situation I'm in?

Why do people still use Revolvers and Lever-Action Rifles?

      Anonymous

      They're not dicklets.

      Anonymous

      cuz they're fun?

      Anonymous

Fun is the big one, but there are some specific reasons otherwise.
Revolvers remain good carry guns simply because their manual of arms is so simple. No funny drills to clear malfs, just pull the trigger again. Can be used from inside a pocket or pressed up against someone in a fight. They're common for hunting or for silhouette shooting because the fixed barrel makes them more accurate than most semis and they can be found in larger cartridges with more power for hunting or knocking down targets at range when silhouette shooting.
Levergats are great for hunting having better ergos innawoods compared to a combat style rifle. Sure they're slower to shoot but that's moot in a hunting context.
Some people use both for media fantasies, boomers like to act out the western shit they saw on TV when they were kids. They want a Colt SAA because the lone ranger had one, same reason why their kids wanted a S&W 29 when Dirty Harry came out, or why their grandkids want whatever because of vidya games.

As long as the lower was transferred as simply a receiver and not "rifle" it should be fine. And as long as it's never been sold as a rifle before.

Thanks, that's what I thought but my friend said something that made me wonder.
The way things are right now, I might just leave the buffer tube bare without even a brace. I know the craziness around braces won't last, I can just add one (or a stock) when the madness ends.

Yes, they were all stamped that from 1994-2004 AFAIK. You can find M16/M4 mags stamped with that, AK mags (I think), Mini14 mags, MP5 mags, pistol mags, etc. They were pretty much all stamped with some variation of that. Some huge stamps, some tiny like yours.

I'm feeling torn between a few items I want to purchase. If I can only buy one, should I buy a S&W 649 in .357, a 1911 in .45acp or 10mm, or a 12 gauge Ithaca model 37? It's always hard to say when stuff won't be terribly overpriced, and all of these are "fun" purchases instead of needs. Only uses outside of range fun or backup home defense would be possibly hiking with the 649 or 1911, since I worry about 9mm being good for wildlife defense.

Just wear it in combination with non military clothing like denim pants and a baseball cap. The only other issue is that because it's a modern looking pattern there could be a question of stolen valor if you haven't served.

I've never owned a rifle, only a few pistols. Fired a few though, and I want something fun for less than $500. Any suggestions? I really liked shooting my friend's SKS and was thinking about getting one but haven't looked into how much they cost yet.

Semi auto with gear and ammo puts you in a .22 with $500.

      Resident Wumbologist

An SKS can be obtained for $500 or less, but you'll be shopping around for a used one that's probably been badly modified by Bubba or one of the really beat up Chinese ones we got in from Albania a year ago. That's still going to be a functional rifle underneath but you might have to spend even more money getting an original stock or replacing parts to get it up to spec.

If you go the AR-15 route you can get a PSA blem kit and blem stripped lower for sub-$400. That's going to give you way more bang per buck than an SKS nowadays.

Other than that as the other anon mentioned, a good 22 rifles is a great starting point if you're trying to keep it cheap and simple.

Based lol, for some reason most of the used stuff I buy was previously owned by guys with a few quirks. Most recent was from a former Air Force Pararescue Jumper who had a thing for Euro guns. He just seemed to collect them rather than shoot them, so I have a nearly new Star pistol. Mag springs are tight enough that they slightly dent brass against the feed lips.

bipod fine but dont do this. its not going to keep being zeroed after you remove it. it will be close enough but it wont be right. your stance will have changed and the barrel harmonics will have changed. if you need the bipod to get close go ahead and fine tune it later but dont expect it to remain zeroed when you remove shit.

Whenever I try to cycle the action with a shell, the dual extractors will hold on to the shell and refuse to eject the shell. Based on my options I can either order parts and do the work myself or just buy a bolt on ebay, the price would be the same. Thanks. I figured I'd need to do that, but it's nice to have an idea about where it came from.

Yours looks like a H&R in a mid grade stock. I inherited a fancy one in .22-250. Solid shooters, a little bit of light buffing and it'll be good as new.

Poor Weaver K series scope. But steel wool, #0000, will remove the rust. Don't put too much pressure on it and keep it away from the wood and glass, obviously. Markings are probably on the other side or top of the gun.

It's certainly seen better days. The optic itself is good though, just needed to wipe the dirt off the lenses. The other side has what looks like a serial number, looks like 1197L3. I can make out the edges of marks under the scope but there's a solid layer of rust. Will hopefully start working on it tomorrow. Haven't looked in the barrel too well, any tips on cleaning rust from inside?

Cleaning rod and bore brush, turn on some comfy listening and start scrubbing. Brass tool brush for the receiver, liberal amounts of oil and time. Midway USA has some great cleaning videos on youtube.

What kinds of shot option are there for .410? I’ve only shot bird shot. What’s good for self defense?

/k/ approved coffee table book? I'm thinking the army handbook for booby traps or the one for improvised munitions?

Question for a kit-building friend: how do you get all the torch splatter out from inside the receiver? Tiny wire brush? Hand file? Sandpaper? Chisel? It's fricking impossible to work in that tiny space.

It's still illegal to put a folding stock or anything but a wrist brace on ak/ar pistols in the us right?

Well you can out other things on back there that aren't stocks, such as a shoulder strap. Or in one case a fidget spinner.
Arm braces are for now permitted specifically because they are not considered stocks.

#0000 buckshot exists. That's like 3-5 pellets that are each .375" diameter.

Was helping the granddad clean out his shed today, came across this. Says he's never seen it and all the markings are rusted over. I'm a little curious about it but we don't have time to clean it. Looks like 30.06, has a short tube mag. Thinking it might be some hunting rifle the uncle snuck over when he got felony charges. I don't have a lot of knowledge on rifles, just seeing if any anon had some quick insight on it.

Judging by the trigger guard and striker it appears to be a Mauser 98, probably a military rifle that was modified into a hunting rifle on the cheap although dedicated commercial models did exist.

      Is that sks-m ?

No, that's a regular SKS fitted with aftermarket duckbill magazines. An SKS-M has a special magazine well and mag catch to use AK pattern magazines, which those aren't.

It's illegal in the US to manufacture an SBR without doing the ATF paperwork first, regardless of the model.
