Total slobberknocker. It’s WWI out there. Anti air on both sides is so potent that fast air and rotor sorties are effectively nowhere. Infantry portable anti tank ordnance is so potent as to shut down the armored vehicle game.

What’s left? Artillery and infantry. Basically WWI with automatic weapons, body armor, drone spotters, and night vision. Huge casualties for almost no territory change.

Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said in September the hole could have been drilled when the capsule was manufactured or in orbit. Rogozin stopped short of blaming crew members, but the statement has caused some friction between Roscosmos and NASA.

Some reports even suggested that Russians believed the hole had been intentionally drilled to allow Nasa astronauts to return back to Earth. Rogozin has since back-pedaled from the statement, blaming the news media for twisting his words.

Prokopyev scoffed at the idea the hole could have been drilled by an astronaut, saying, "You shouldn't think so badly of our crew."

What usually happens is someone in the crowd (i don't know who because they just ask questions without being identified) will doubt a statement made by the speaker. "Russia is isolated" will be met by "Then why is the russian defense minister meeting with Iran and other african countries?".

Russians making small gains at high cost out east. Ukrainians making small gains at high cost down south. Threat of revolt in Belarus or its involvement in the war is down (for now, we'll see what the depression economy does long term). Maldova's chance of involvement has also gone down.

Rocket artillery given to Ukraine has made a sizeable impact in their ability to kill the Russian leadership, destroy supply depot's, and his ground lines of communication and infrastructure but it hasn't caused a strategic shift so far.

Ukrainian shell shortage hasn't gotten much better but Russia's own shortage is balancing it out.

I would say at this point Ukraine looks more likely to get a breakthrough by cutting off supply lines to Kherson. This combined with low morale might result in a large scale route or surrender, or a retreat ala the Kiev and Kharkiv axes.

That said, even if Ukraine retakes the Kherson area it isn't clear that this will free up enough resources to make a counter push into areas taken in the East.

My guess is that Ukraine will eventually retake Kherson and points south and then we will see more costly stalemate and then a cease fire and frozen conflict.

Depending on how well Ukraine's economy does as part of the EU, and how the war helps motivate reforms against corruption, and how fricked Russia's economy is long term by emigration and sanctions, Ukraine might become powerful enough to take it all back some day, or they might lose interest.

This killing Putin seems less likely. I think it only totally collapses his regime if something less likely happens like Belarus going into revolt and voting Luka, forcing Russia to try to "liberate" that too.

Wounded typically outnumber KIA by 3 to 1 in every war since the 20th century. When I heard 75k dead from some guy here, I immediately interpreted that to mean something like 20k dead and 55k wounded, and that the dude didn't know what a "casualty" really was.

Russia have been moving troops to the southern region, most likely because of the anticipated Ukrainian offensive in the South, alternatively they want to take back some of what was lost during the Donbass offensive.

I think the next step is a Russian offensive in the western part of Donbass and a Ukrainian offensive in the Kherson region.
So in short, Nothing is happening yet.

I've been taking a peep at the vatnik Telegram groups over the last few days and one topic that keeps being brought up is that supposedly a huge number of volunteers are signing up in Russia to support the war effort.

anyone know if this is true or not? is there even a way to verify that without being the CIA?

      Anonymous

I don't think there's any way to verify it, but I can certainly believe it. They're offering something like 300k roubles per month (whether or not they'll pay it, is of course another issue). In the provinces, the typical salary is 30k. A young lad with no prospects would certainly be tempted to go to Ukraine for a few months (after all, according to the news we're winning easily, right?) and earn several years' worth of pay.

    No way Russia will attack
    >they launch a full scale airborne and armoured invasion
Ok, well then maybe this will immediately drop into low-intensity
    >strike for cauldrons
Alright, if they're going all in, they'll take Kiev in a couple of weeks
    >reach Kiev and completely collapse
Russia has to just be massing for a huge push
    >their push fails completely and forces them to slow to a crawl
There's no way they would fight like it's WW1
    >mass artillery and trench warfare
Surely after losing another city, this'll set the pace for the rest of the war
    >they slow down even more
Ukraine can't have any more aces up its sleeve
    >HIMARS
So maybe this will devolve into a low-intensity conflict anyway
    >Ukraine starts taking ground

At this point I've accepted I'm a brainlet and given up on trying to predict anything or keep up with the battlefield.

3 day Blitzkrieg operation to restore SLAVA BBC POCCIA historical lands turned into 5 month slugfest.
With every passing week, the area of Russian offensives shrinks. But they are still advancing towards Bakhmut and Soledar, albeit increasingly slow.
On our side, Ukrainian losses are downplayed, their victories overstated. My favorite part of this is the big vaunted counter offensive in June- I mean Jul- I mean August -well we actually meant September ;). It remains to be seen, if Ukies can actually pull off largescale offensive maneuvers.
Russians have proven to be not even a papertiger, but more like an Aerosol Tiger. Only during the last two months did they start to properly coordinate combined arms, their shelling call-in times went down, aviation increased and so on and so forth. With an ungodly artillery advantage, it took them 5 months to take Luhansk Oblast.
More and more commentators agree, that we are about the enter a new "decisive phase" of this whole thing. As in: New Wargoals for both sides.
Overall fire for Russians is down in quality and quantity. Aviation is somewhat similar but the number is inflated due to the way sorties are counted. Manpower issues on Russian side. Equipment issues on Russian side. Deep strikes by Ukraine are having an effect.
Severe political issues in Ukraine, problems with colaborators and infiltrators. Lack of motorisation, lack of training. Manpower seems to be growing.

That is something that I admire about Russians. They are "honest" the moment they do not fear retaliation. They engage in full, total war on a personal level.
That is something we should emulate. I'm tired of constantly talking about Geneva this, war crime that, when our opponents don't give a shit. Let's just be honest, like the Russians.
War must become unrestricted again. Quadruple amputee all Russian captives and send them back with their balls nailed to their forehead. Nailbombs in Kindergartens, Bubonic Plague smeared in maternity wards, retirement homes set on fire. I am a moderate. But only once Russian mothers suffocate their children in their sleep, to spare them from the terror of tomorrow, only then can we talk about potentially beginning negotiations.

Russia has lost ~75,000 wounded and killed, Ukraine has lost about a third of that in soldiers, but about double that in Civilians (or 4 times that if you count the ones who have been kidnapped and gulaged).
Russia has made minor gains in the east at great material cost, and Ukraine has been making incremental gain in the south, but an unwillingness to demolish their own cities and slaughter their own citizens has meant that Ukrainian progress is reasonable slow.
Western artillery (8 M142 HIMARs systems armed with M31A1 GMRLS missiles) has devastated Russian supply efforts over the last two weeks, and Russian forces are again nearing a culmination point.
The Russian navy and Airforce continue to be humiliated, and Russia signed a safe passage agreement for grain ships to leave Odessa and Mikolaiv, but then bombarded the ports with 1970s era cruise missiles within 6 hours of the agreement being signed, once again proving that Russian treaties are worth nothing but asswipe.

Russia seems to have lost more ground than they've captured, though if we're measuring each nation's capacity to continue this war Ukraine appears to be much closer to running out of men and material compared to Russia. The real winners are the MIC and oil companies, nothing lost for massive gains

ukraine is not facing a manpower shortage lol. with a pop of 40 million+ they could conscript several million more men if they really needed to
an equipment shortage, yes for sure. It's something they've been openly stating for months now. That's why the west has been trying to train them up on NATO systems, so they can be supplied indefinitely instead of relying on old soviet stock

This. Whether pro ukrainians or pro russians like it or not, the fate of Kherson will determine the fate of the war.

why tho? isn't kherson a pile of rubble by now?

          Anonymous

kherson is the only strategic objective that remained relatively intact since the russians were able to take it in the opening days

          Anonymous

Kherson is relatively intact because the mayor or whatever of the area instantly surrendered when the war started, so the Russians just rolled in.
As for it's strategic importance, if Kherson falls out of Russian hands and into Ukrainian hands, Ukraine can *directly* threaten Crimea, which will force Russia to either pull out of the East to reinforce their strategic Black Sea harbors, or completely pull out of Crimea, which will be a massive propaganda defeat for Russia and a major strategic victory for Ukraine.

            >As for it's strategic importance, if Kherson falls out of Russian hands and into Ukrainian hands, Ukraine can *directly* threaten Crimea
If ukr retakes Kherson both bridges would be blown up by Russians themselves at that point, they'd have to retake the rest of the south from Zaporizhya direction

              >If ukr retakes Kherson both bridges would be blown up by Russians themselves at that point
Which would still destroy the Southern Front, because no bridge means no means to supply the south.

How? I can easily see the Ukrainians taking Kherson, but not crossing the Dniepr. What happens then?

          Anonymous

          >I can easily see the Ukrainians taking Kherson, but not crossing the Dniepr. What happens then?
Then Ukraine takes Crimea and destroys the land bridge between it and Russia, which would completely and irreversibly end the Southern Front of the war, containing Russia's war machine exclusively in the East.

            Anonymous

To even get to Crimea it will have to cross the Dniepr. Even if it does, then it will have to go on the offensive against Russia, which it has demonstrated to have extreme trouble with. The only reason Kherson is liable to fall is because the position is logistically indefensible.

This, the Russians are creaming themselves right now because this war has finally completely subverted them into being Pro-Russian. Even if (when?) they lose here, they'll at least still have subverted and distorted two entire western political ideologies

          Anonymous

          >So you’re saying they are inching closer westward?
That was the original plan, and it's probably why Russia hasn't mass mobilised yet (the real war is yet to being). The problem for Putin is that the west decided to support Ukraine to a degree that no one could've predicted based on previous experiences with Russian annexation, and now there's a very good change that Russia will not even be able to conquer Ukraine.

And if they can't conquer Ukraine NATO doesn't have to be in a position where they'd single-handedly defeat Russia without even trying. Because if Russia was to lose against NATO they would either have to accept a humiliating peace agreement, if any - or escalate to nukes. And no one wants Russia to even consider escalating to nukes.

It doesn’t make any sense. The appropriate pistol, for example, would be a glock; tasteless, soulless, anodyne, generic, commonplace. A 57 is expensive and rare, also designed with a specific niche. And a prius; hybrid, pussified, commonplace. There aren’t many hyundais like that. And a normal hellfire, much more widespread and indiscriminate in its use.

Come to that, it should be the facebook woman not the theranos woman too, but I digress.

Russia had limited independent media before the war but it all got completely squashed on March after Putin signed in a new law banning anything that wasn't pretty much just repeating absolutely everything the government said or that was straight-up state-run media.

One of the few independent news outlets had pretty much everyone resign and leave the set while on air, and left the "Swan Lake" ballet playing until it was taken down.
