How much do you believe that food shortages are coming?

How much do you believe that food shortages are coming? Is it a total nothingburger or is there some potential truth to it? I think it's possible that places like the US may not feel it too bad, but if you live in a 2nd/3rd world country, you stand to get really fricked over by supply chain issues. Shit like this doesn't just turn back on quickly.

If you believe it, what are you doing to prepare?

      Anonymous

I live in the Nothern nothingness of the United States, where food is generally a bit more expensive because it has a longer ship cost to get to the shelves.

Product displays have shrank, prices have hiked, and quality has deteriorated.
      It has indeed started.

I've got two boxes of dry food stashed to help hold out through any potential difficult time where supply chains effectively stop. I wager I can survive ~3-4 months. I'll keep building the stash, i've been buying household goods now. Soap and first aid kind of things.

What do you mean when you say "I've got two boxes"? What's a box? How much is actually inside of it, and what kind of stuff?

Two 66Qt/16Gal plastic tubs filled with 5lb bags of various types of rice, dried pastas, dried beans, lentils, flour, Salt, and sugar.

It's all still cheap stuff to buy and can sustain you for a while, even if it does get to be a boring feed after a while.

I have smaller 6Qt (1.5gal) tubs with spices and dry yeast. But these are only good for maybe 6mo-1yr of storage. Especially the yeast, so I keep it on rotation. I also keep about 15 boxes of sticks of butter frozen.

            Anonymous

if you have the space, you can extend your spice and yeast life by refrigerating or freezing them, I'm told.
i've got 10x 27-gal plastic tubs of food and it still doesn't feel like enough. (i have a family tho)

It's a little overwhelming but I'm in a lot better shape than most people. I don't have a garden, but I suppose I could get a few potted plants. I need more supplies like shoes, clothes, meds, and first aid, too.

Meh I don't think we are trending towards doomsday with packs of roaming nogs yet. I really don't. But I do think supplies could get sparse ans you'll be glad to have a cache of food so you don't have to live on goyslop. Be it shelves are empty or just too expensive. So it's better to be prepared rather than rolling over and dying because you can't be more prepared by living in a city or something

The thing about American food chains is we on paper at least have the resources to get through it. Yeah it's gonna be really shitty to be poor but Americans are fat as shit so it'd be good for us anyways. The fly in the soup is
          >is the narrative of artificial shortages real and

          Weird times.

Even if there isn't doomsday famine in the United States future, there will be continued inflation and almost certainly a currency crisis. Neither of these will improve without first some degree of widespread violence. Hunkering down in place for a long time will be the best option for suburbia. Preparing for emergencies is a lost value.

Mmm. Maybe maybe not. Rate hikes I think are already slowing down some markets so we just have to see if it really helps or not. Damage is done. If I would be surprised if we can't get it under control before eoy (like 4 percent by their own metric). The more interesting thing to me is what we are doing to solve the oil crisis. Currently it's nothing. If the third world starts burning coal like mad could really bring prices down globally for oil heavy countries.

Keynesian economics is a lie. The road is ending for the Fed to be kicking down the can. It will never be under control. You must shatter that illusion to understand why preparation is important.

              Anonymous

Oh no doubt keynesians are homosexuals and wrong but I'm not convinced that means the system is going to explode as for that to happen then Americans would need to show some resolve to reject the system. And that just hasn't happened yet or shown any signs. So they will continue to bleed for the israelites and they will kick their mess down the road some more and make life slightly worse for the next generation. That's how I see it anyways. Gimme a buzz when we reach a global digital reserve currency. That's when I'm gonna start panicking.

this article and the fact that food processing plants are being destroyed has me worried.
how do you plan to go from 9million people eating bugs to 390million in 8 years time
not 50 or 30 but 8 years. Which is basically right around the corner.

Middle class will be able to afford to eat okay but they may make beef and shit hard to get. Plenty of other protein exists that isn't bug shit so chin up friend. Even then, being veg isn't that bad. You're right to be concerned but these scenarios I think only really affect Black folk and poors in the short term. But I could be wrong so don't get complacent. Just calling it as I see it and. I point in feeding a stagnating population bugs when beans exist.

For what ive heard, what most people ignore is the hygiene stuff

Buy dried beans in bulk and put them in thick mylar 1 gallon bags with an appropriate amount of oxygen absorbers. Heat seal with a clothes iron. Then put those bags in a bin or something. Very, very easy.
You're right on hygiene. I need to get more wipes and soap. Water filtration systems, too.
Don't focus too much on what you should get for trading. If it comes down to it, you ideally should only trade with neighbors you trust and friends you trust.
Rum, coffee, THC carts are all fine to have, though.

the major issue is the first world will feel it last, there might not be food shortages like you know of in the west.

It will hit emerging markets the worse. As we have seen with colombia, rising prices and food availability will lead to more populist and authoritarian leaders rising up. Lots of food riots lots of governments being removed, possible civil wars and terrorism. You think migration to europe and america is bad now?
expect 100million to 500million people trying to flood in to europe and america to escape food poverty.

its not only the riots, but the treatment of the j6 prisoners. How the truck protestors were treated in canada like they were terorrists.

After watching a couple documentaries about how certain countries came to be, History has almost always gone down towards more increasing levels of liberalism. Everytime we keep marching onward and onward towards the left and liberalism. From monarchy to republic to direct democracy. From tiny nations to full nations and now to unions. From "we need to protect our borders" to "borders are racist and we need as many human beings as possible inside our borders as fast as possible".
from a patriarchy to gerontocracy to a globo-homosexocracy.
things are just get gayer and browner at each generation.
we know where this goes it this keeps going on, imagine the most unhinge leftist view and the imagine in 5 to 10 years time those views will be normalized and seen as plain by future standards.

Is there anything or anyone who can stop this
basically the only options are becoming to isolate and survive.

Americans cannot handle any food shortage. The baby formula shortage was fine. Who cares about babies? But a shortage of burgers and wings? That's asking to be guillotined by LaTanya and Todd.

  23. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Not our problem. We are the reason for those shortages. Harvest probably not going to be good this year too because of unstable weather, so I don't think there will be much export except for feeding Donbass and Syria. So enjoy your shortages, foreigners.

No point in prepping. If shit genuinely hits the fan in the way the preppers claim we're all gonna be living in a nuclear wasteland anyways. After six weeks of living in a storm shelter shitting yourself 16-hours a day from a diet of canned beans and coconut oil you'll be begging for a bullet.

Katrina was isolated to a stretch of coast - if there's a full-blown balls-to-the-wall nuclear exchange 90% of the animal and plant life from sea to shining sea is gonna be fricking dead or dying.

Do you want to live out The Road? Because that's how you live out The Road.

Yeah and if the sun goes supernova or if the poles reverse then we're fricked as well. This is just smoke and mirrors frickery so you'll be forced to be an obedient slave if you don't prepare for manufactured crisis.

If they manufacture a crisis and cut the food supply I'm eating the rich.

This is total fricking bullshit. The bombs will blast the shit out of cities and silo locations, and there will be a slight lingering radiation in those areas.
The only way you'd frick over everything is going out of your way with hundreds of thousands of cobalt bombs, way more bombs than have ever existed.

Which is why I'm only packing a crowbar and some cleaning supplies.
Preppers can talk shit all day but they have to sleep sometimes,

where they live and how to make mustard gas.

I have a .22lr rifle and can hit cans 150 yards offhand. I know, not very spectacular. But there are lots of little edible critters all around here. I have lots of beans/rice. Maybe over a years worth. My brother has several times more than I do. Other people around here may do a similar thing. My neighbor raises chickens since he gave up alcohol. If you have a rifle and live near the woods, you can eat.

Take this as a hypothetical and not a threat, I've just always been genuinely curious about this sort of stuff:
What exactly would you do to make sure nobody sneaks on your property and murders you and your brother for your stuff once everything is a lawless hellscape?
Just barricade up? Take turns watching? Assume the best of people?

Take this as good thought exercise to make sure you and yours are safe in the worst case scenario.

I dont take it as a threat. Noone knows I have this shit to begin with, looking from the outside. I would try to have humanity to those I felt deserved it. Other than that, I have no idea. I dont think many people do. We’ll just have to cross that bridge when we get there. I know that in some “The Road” style reality you really do not own or “have” anything you cannot defend with extreme violence at the drop of a hat. Everyone has to die. I will just do the best I can until that time comes.

    >/misc/ -- how much do you believe that food shortages are coming?

Warming is going to frick agriculture - while it will open up some new land, it will cause more farmland loss and disruption. The Ukraine invasion will also frick with this year's harvest.

    >what are you doing to prepare?

My houseplants include some warmweather veggies that grow well from seed and aren't widely farmed in northern europe. If we start to see +10°C spikes I'll put the seeds in the back garden in spring and autumn and see if I get anything. This isn't support-my-family quantities, but if we still have staples it'll give us a spot of luxury. And if we actually get the warming under control, I won't feel BAD about a houseful of plants.

if warming is real Russia will become a dominant power in the future as the permafrost thaws making land more farmable

Don't forget that the Siberian tundra is mostly very low altitude. What largescale agricultural crops do well in salt marsh?

Somehow people made it without farms for eons. Maybe the word you are looking for is "garden"
Even hunter gathering was not only sustainable but in fact humans managed to populate utilizing that system

The line between 'hunter-gatherer' and 'farmer' is a lot fuzzier than you think. Most hunter-gatherers make an effort to improve the comfort level of the region they gather from.

I think the goal is to withold food to force compliance - disarmament, biosecurity/biometrics, mandatory medical treatment, digital currency, free speech, etc...
There is also some plan to change the diets of middle and lower classes in the west. Maybe the idea isn't to starve us to death, but just enough that Beyond Burgers/crickets/lab-grown food becomes appetizing. Rich people invested a lot into alternative foods and those investments will fail in the free market, so food shortages will tilt the field. They do the same thing with energy - make petroleum so expensive that green energy is competitive and important investments become profitable.

The goal is to make rich and poor classes again aesthetically included. You want the poor to wear poor clothes, eat bugs and sleeping in pods.

The elephant in the room is water resources.
Urban gays simply require a hundred times more water than they can actually collect, from pipes they can't maintain, from catchments they don't control.

Urban gays have zero concept of their water use, because they can't conceptualize indirect water consumption.
The things they consume require water to produce, they are indirectly reliant on water resources from rural areas for things like growing crops, farming timber, operating industrial plants and power stations.

Most households don't have enough water for a single week, many couldn't survive for three days.
Urbanites could literally start dying in three days.

Piped water requires positive pressure, many people would have water in their pipes but no way to get that water.
Either the pumping station would shut down, their towers wouldn't be refilled, their reservoirs would be disconnected or unpottable.

    Three days.
Filling your bathtub could give you a week.
Evaporating urine could give you another day.
Trying to harvest dew could get you another day
It might rain, you might be able to refill containers but rainwater won't remain drinkable.
You will have to do all these things to survive.

Surface water deposits will become contaminated with cholera straight away because there won't be any water to flush toilets.
But you're going to have to use it anyway.

Your only real hope is sealing up any hard surfaces like roof gutters, storm drains and basketball courts to make shallow dams, then begin the back breaking work of hauling that water indoors and hopping someone knows how to chlorine and/or filter it.

Oh and if that's not enough enjoy your entire cardboard suburb becoming a fire ball because there's no water to fight fires.

Plan on demolishing homes to form a fire break between neighborhoods, and killing the occupants of said homes when they object to their homes being torn down.

At least you will get some wood for cooking, enjoy trying to ration fuel in an urban area when people want fires for warmth

Me and my gf recently got a 100m2 backyard that we are now cultivating with lots of veggies. We also plan on growing medicinal and gourmet mushrooms when the weather gets less hot.
It's great growing your own food. No plastic waste, all the organic waste goes into the compost and the food tastes amazing because you can harvest it at just the right time.
I should probably start stocking up on whatever we can't produce ourselves though. Got a pantry that has quite some room left. I live a 5 minute walk from the supermarket so we don't really keep a large inventory usually, as there is normally no need for it.
