    >Sea mines are powerful and potent, but navies are traditionally very reluctant to invest in them,' Professor White said.
    >As part of this push it was announced in January that Defence is buying 20 land-based 'god of war' High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which launch surface-to-surface precision guided missiles that can strike an enemy 300km away.

not the guy you were replying to but given everything else it can do I would not be at all surprised if HIMARS had a rocket that could deploy naval mines at range
If it doesn't then they need to make one because that would be really fricking useful for us down here

The old CAPTOR, or the new Hammerhead design would probably be the only mines able to fit into the launchers, but, would lack any room for a tactically relevant booster to launch them - if they even could. You would be better off just getting GMLRS-ER, or ATACMS with an active seeker head for anti-ship roles, and stick with planes, ships, and subs planting the mines.

          Anonymous

They cancelled the anit-ship ATACMS called Cross Domain CD-ATACMS, in favor of using the budget to further the anti-ship version of the PrSM, which Aussies are getting, along with GMLRS-ER.

Any 80series aircraft bomb can take a DST anti-ship mine fuze instead of the usual fuzes.
        >magnetic/sound detection of targets
        >buries itself on the bottom in mud and debris so no trawling mine-sweeps
        >uses the bubble-effect to break a ships keel not just blow a hole by contact
Drop it with a guidance kit and it can be placed within a metre of any spot in a harbour or channel although it has a wider range because its not like the old floating 'horn' contact mines

Why? HIMARS is limited by Treaty to 300km, even F35 can fly further than that.

Not anymore, it isn't. That's why the PrSM will be 750km range, and why the Army is finally getting land based Tomahawks back.

You don't. You strap it to a wing kit and launch it from your F/A-18s. The US already has you covered, homie. No need for the moronic shit.

Frick firing one out of a HIMARS, they don't even need exact placement, just load pallets of
a hundred 500lb-ers into a C17 and cargo-dump them off the ramp across miles of chinky ocean for shits&giggles

              Anonymous

Exactly. Just modify the pallet system from Rapid Dragon a little, and you have a potent multipurpose delivery system. Which can also launch LRASM-A, and JASSM-ER. Aussies have taken finalizing the booster for the Surface Launched LRASM-A over, too. So, get you some HIMARS with anti-ship PrSM, some SHORAD with NSM, and some Typhoon vertical launch systems able to launch tomahawk block V, SM-6, and SL-LRASM-A, and you have quite a potent anti-ship defense system.

You could definitely design a system to do it, though, it would be extremely impractical. Especially when systems already exist that are just as good, and much cheaper.

                Anonymous

OK so for a more serious approach, I like the idea because it gives us a reliable way of deploying naval mines even in contested waters and airspace, much as the conventional HIMARS rockets allow for long range precision strikes into enemy controlled territory even without air superiority
Such a system, if it had the range, would let us mine the absolute frick out of all those sweet naval chokepoints just to the north even if the PLAN was breathing right down our necks, which is a capability I suspect we may need one day

                Anonymous

The HIMARS system isn't long enough to utilize such a system. This is all just spitballing, so, bare with me: An ATACMS warhead weighs 213kg - 243kg, and has a range of 270km - 300km. It uses, roughly, a 9ft long, 2ft wide booster to achieve this. Now, take the 9ft booster and strap your 2000lb 10ft mine on the front, and you have a 20ft surface launched mine. Problem is, it will be sticking 6ft-7ft out of your HIMARS launcher, and have a range of 75km max. So, you're going to need to move to a Mk57 VLS or similar custom launch tube, as it won't fit in a Mk41 VLS. Now, if you're wanting more than 75km range, you're going to need to add another booster to that ATACMS, which is going to get you a 30ft long SL-mine that will need a custom launch tube. To me, it just doesn't make sense to spend that money when you have all these other options already in service - or that could be modified with minimal work.

So what other systems are available then that offer the same capability, namely to sow mines in enemy waters even in contested airspace?

None, that I know of, as it's a rather impractical weapons system. You just have the US mine with their subs in contested waters. OR maybe make some air-launched stand-off version from the powered JDAM kit. Would be rather simple to do.

Its not that we lack the budget, its that we lack the economy of scale. Foreign equipment is cheaper because they can simply manufacture a whole lot more of it than we can. So we can make high end equipment but if its going to be cheap enough to justify spending taxpayer money on it we'd need good export market success.

Yeah, that's what I was saying with the joint work with the US. Easier to offload some of the R&D costs, along with batch pricing. Your budget isn't big, though.

      Anonymous

      >why is the australian navy such a meme?
Population, distances and money anon. It explains everything about Australian defence.

Take a conventional submarine. If your in Europe you can do what you want wherever you like and you don't even need to surface, in Australia just moving a submarine from Perth to Brisbane is an international deployment for the average Europoor, same for Japan, SK and others. You can't get away with that here BUT your also 25 million people so you can't really afford nuclear submarines and you can't really build huge numbers of conventional either. What do you do? Spend 60 years using 6 conventional submarines with as long a range as you can afford... that still don't do what you really need.

Now apply that to everything, want large numbers of surface vessels but you can't do what the euros do and buy shit loads of smaller ships like corvettes because they are fricking toys compared to ranges and role required by Australian geography. Destroyers would do it but you can't afford enough of them and you can't man them because population and wage costs. What do you do? Buy the most capable 10,000 tonne frigates you can buy and hope for the best. Then you invest in force multipliers. You can't afford 200 fighters even though you need them? Buy 80/100 F-35 plus all the tip top ISR you can get like satellites etc (all shit that nations of 25 million can't do and can't afford).

Applies to the army too. Want high numbers, well you can't afford it, wages are too high. You could fatten it out on paper like europoors by just buying tanks but guess what you can't because you don't have a border and you'll never be able to sealift/deploy 600 Abrams even if you can afford them. Solution, buy token amount of tanks and just invest in small number of highly trained soilders to cover contributions to US expeditions.

What are you left with, a capable but very boutique defence force. It can do everything just not at the scale you need it.

Ironically the no bullshit solution to Australia's geographic and demographic problems right now are indigenous nukes and 4 SLBMs. Anything else is pushing shit up hill. Not until we hit 40 million do these problems start to fade but that's not until 2046-2050.

        This.
Plus ustralia basically dominates one whole hemisphere of the globe.
(Ignoring Indonesia, because its irrelevant even to Indons.)
Apart from the Chinese Costline and Japan there is nothing in range of Australia except ICBMs.
The indon archipelago acts as line of messy barriers between Australia and anywhere else.
The PLA-N cant sail through operationally without getting chanelled into a hundred seperate kill-zones with no idea where they would get ambushed or just roll over a smart minefield.
Conversely the RAN has the same issue with sending its surface fleet north and with diesel subs - the old O-class boats used to slip through by snorkelling at night as the TNI-N is useless but you cant do that nowadays when china has satellite imaging.
So nuke boats for the RAN reset the strategic balance in the Austrlian Hemisphere.
        >"We will sit off their coast and run missile drills" isnt just HfRO, its the new RAN plan to scare the shit out of the Chinese.
