obviously, this will become more accurate and longer-range, as well as punching more meters of reinforced concrete, so I do not understand why the construction of classical airfields continues, when it is obvious that the new meta is a vertical takeoff and a network of bunkers for their basing

Airfields easily grow HAS, an alien concept to vatnigs who only recently discovered berms inside MSA and revetments near flightline. Shooting down inbound nasties will be the non-poorgay mandatory meta since bunkers are easily closed off if too deep to destroy. Active defense will be main defense with HAS/bunkers to shrug off the little shit.

It's worth it, and defense comes in layers.
If they want to bomb the fortifications they have to put planes in the air or use artillery etc. Doing those things means that they're spending time doing it and exposing themselves to counterattack in the process.

It's the same concept behind having a safe. The safe won't keep a thief out forever, but it can delay them long enough that you can respond and stop the theft.

It’s not believed by either side that the zigs can actually win ww3, so the point of fixed fortifications like the Polish scheme are to prevent the muscovy from seizing anything in a hybrid campaign that might later have to get taken back or gets indefinitely frozen in place.

getting trough the swamps is risky for both refugees and police - nobody knows how many drowned in the bog or ate mushrooms that were poisonous - terrain is largely impassable - and border guards, army and police are patrolling roads mostly due to the risks posed by terrain.

If you're serious don't live near a target. Fallout should not be confused with blast BTW so no need to dig below grade. Serious people plan ALL of their lives.

The old Navy KMU airlock (easily made from a 20' shipping container by adding personnel doors at each end and a simple partition with decon and filtered positive pressure air) style was ideal for converting any suitable building and frequently used in the early Cold War. Containers make excellent NBC shelters (use new "one trip" grade, not junk). A 40' HC could store food for a year or two and be supplied by filtered well water via hand pump (have spares).

most of defences would consist of earthworks (antitank ditches), roads that will enable automated minelayers easy access to designated minefield locations and means of flooding already boggy terrain - classical bunkers will be few and far between
    - until Ukr debacle Misc favoured defence in depth - falling back dozens of miles and depleting Rus logistical ability before counterattacking
now this probably was replaced with miles hence proposed fortifications...

      >and all this anti-personnel mines talk is really something new - everyone talks that we need to defend against Rus aggression - but only aggression vector it can stop currently is refugee trafficking...
This is likely a significant factor: If Russia for some reason would collapse as a country in the near future the Poles would probably want to have a nice fat swathe of landmines and a bunch of fences and road blocks to keep fleeing Russians out of their country.

      >until Ukr debacle Misc favoured defence in depth
are you suggesting that they don't still favor defense in depth? You do know that strategic depth doesn't just refer to physical space to retreat through, but instead refers to the ability to recover from strategic setbacks right? Fortifications increase strategic depth by introducing friction into the attacking force.

  7. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Sure, unless they build the wrong kind of stuff for political show.
With fortifications the idea isn't to literally build trenches and bunkers to have infantry fight out of and stop the enemy across the whole line of the border.
If Ukraine had an Albanian amount of bunkers along its border for example, it wouldn't have worked, because they couldn't/wouldn't mobilize an army to man the border every time Russia made threats, and if they did that would have dispersed everyone to lines at greatly separated edges of their territory while Russia could have concentrated everything on a few points.

At the border you just want to not let random people walk across anytime they please, see the enemy forces coming and slow them down, and keep slowing them down until you have time to marshal your own forces and meet them with a home field advantage.
Bridges and dams wired to explode, stockpiles of mines ready to get laid on roads, existing minefields and ditches at key points, shit like that.
The only place you might want to build a Maginot-like line of bunkers to make a stand in is around Warsaw since that's the main population center near the border.

Given how much even just boring-ass trenches (not to mention regular buildings, let alone actual fortifications) have slowed down the R*ssoids advance, I'd say it's worth it. And before anyone says "MUH R*SSIAN INCOMPETENCE THO", the Americlaps were also significantly slowed down in urban warfare a.k.a. with enemies in "fortifications".

Not worth it unless Poland plans to get involved in Russia’s energy market with Europe. But it’s probably just to show the government is “doing something” to protect the people. Sending forces to support Ukraine would be the very best way to assure their security but they don’t have that much political willpower — spending some money though they can do that at least.

            >Aren't war games a bit like sparring, that is it's not about winning, but about finding out what you can improve?
war games are a lot like sparring in that you agree with your "partner" what you're going to do beforehand and you're doing it in order to actually throw a punch at somebody for (a degree of) real and refine your technique

take SINKEXs for example. it's not being done because we don't know the weapon's effects, it's not being done for any kind of combat simulation purpose, it's being done to test the weapon launch procedure all the way from taking the weapon from stores, maintaining it, loading it on the ship, setting it, finding the target, targeting the target, and launching the weapon. and also to familiarise the crew with at least one live weapon launch on top of all the training simulations, so they know what it feels, sounds and smells like.
            just like sparring, indeed.

although there are indeed wargames which actually test different tactics and strategies.

              SINKEX isn't a wargame. It's a training exercise.

Fortifications are not about "Will stop any attack" it's about making the cost of a successful attack higher, making a successful attack take longer, being able to defend a section with less manpower ect. Unless/Until Russia collapses it will remain an existential threat for anyone east of the Rhine who isn't Russian. While Germany reinforcing its border with poland is stupid, anyone else on the frontline of Russia, Russia lite, or Russia if they somehow manage to take Ukraine should prepare as if it's the Russia of 1952.

Building fortifications right at the border is not the best idea, and so is fighting the border battle.
This was conventional wisdom for many years, reinfoirced by history of 1939 where polish army was wasted in pointless battle, rather than defending from more favourable positions.

    Ukrainian war changed this outlook:
    >russian army turned out to be much less capable than people previously thought, so calculation "either we defend in depth and have a chance, or defend on the border and certainly lose" have been revised
    >russian army turned out to be way more brutal toward civvie population than expected. People deluded themselves into thinking russia at least tries to be civilised. Current war demonstrated that they arre still horde of reapists looters and warcrime happy violent morons. That means abandoning your cities and trusiting russians to behave like civilised people humans toward civilian population is no longer a viable option.
    >it turns out that dislodging troops from prepared position is significantly harder than people thought before the war. This is double incentive - not only your defence is more effective, but if you allow the enemy to take ground it will be much harder to dislodge them than people thought previously.

we have these guys too, they're under the illusion that all of the ally-building done over the last 50 years is all completely fake and the US would actually just nuke the netherlands first or some stupid shit like that.
btw polish boomers need to understand that the sentiment towards poland has shifted pretty significantly over the last 10 years, you're basically a real-time example of what happens when a country is just allowed to grow and develop without russian "influence". sure you're not on the level of western europe yet, but you'll get there.

completely agree, you're right. not doing operation unthinkable was a massive fricking mistake.
                >instead you sold us to the soviets
oh believe me we'd much rather that didn't happen, mistakes were made, but especially by the time russians got nukes it was pretty much out of the question.
                >until reagan came you had nukes aimed at poland
at russian strategic targets in poland yeah, how the frick do you expect the US to fight a hot war without nukes when the russians were absolutely going to use them, it's not like we were specifically aiming for poles dude.

anyway, this sounds like more fricking paranoia.
you're firmly part of the west now, don't expect that to change.

                >instead you sold us to the soviets
The allies tried pretty hard to influence Poland diplomatically and restore the pre-war Polish government in London, this was even layed out in Yalta, but Stalin wiped his ass with any deal regarding Poland and forced his puppet government on Lublin. They even killed representatives of the London government who went to Mosscow to negotiate a merger of both goverment s. At the end of the day the allies failed to do anything diplomatically and Poland was at the end of the day fully occupied by the Soviets. Only way they could have “saved” Poland is through WW3 wich realistically they wouldn’t have won in ‘45 even if they tried. And even if they had managed a diplomatic deal it would have ended up with purges of the democratic elements like it happened in the rest of the Soviet puppets in eastern Europe. Honestly the Allied post-war influence partition plan of eastern Europe failed massively, its almost a fricking miracle that they even managed to keep Greece if you ask me.

he is consistently making very obvious language mistakes, this guy is not polish. The "besieged fortress" narrative is a classic russian psyop tool to induce disunity in Europe, they want countries to have grievances against each other, be paranoid of neighbors they could cooperate with against Russia, vatniks want to be able to pick off the East European countries one by one without any assistance from outside. This is why they have always supported far-right parties that are interested in exactly this isolationist message.

Albo używają ich w zupełnie innym kontekście niż normalna osoba. Takim przykładem słowa jest np "adekwatny". Znam w miarę ten język więc mnie takie rusycyzmy aż w oczy kują. Seeing our politicians successfully managing to convince all these post-soviet shitholes they can successfully defend themselves against a Russian reconquista is really impressive. It's cynical, straight up fricking evil and revolting to any man with principles and values, but it is effective, it will hold our rivals back for a little while at the cost of these people's lives. At the end of the day they are the ones who make the actual choice.

The smart play would be to make sure the fortifications look nice. Then even if they aren't needed in the end, at least you get a tourist attraction out of it.

The line of fortifications the Poles autistically built on the border with the HRE in the 14th century is a popular tourist trail to this day.

call me crazy but for the long term they should plant as many trees as possible either behind or within the obstacles

over time the trees will add to the barrier and the EU and other fricks can be told that Poland is not making a border wall but a nature preserve

the land mines are there to deter illegal hunters, obviously 🙂

Building fortifications is worth it if you're also building underground tunnels big enough to supply them through it.
It's much less worth it without that detail.
Sure the underground tunnels makes it cost 20x more, but it makes them 1000x more effective.

Its more about building bunkers you can house troops in and preparing the area in a way that is to your favor.

        Anonymous

Yes, which isn't nearly as effective as having underground tunnels connecting the bunkers that are large enough for supplies to move through.
It's a lot cheaper, but not that great.

    >Immune to line charges

    >Immune to bombing
    >Provides no cover for the enemy
    >Extremely compatible with mines
    >Extremely compatible with NATO wire
    >Cheap to deploy
    >Simple to deploy

Drill a hole, plant one, pour some cement, done.

Probably because it takes one guy with a blowtorch/grinder and some time to cut a path in them. If you build something out of solid concrete you need to use explosives, and quite a bit of it too, to get rid of it.

Im not saying they would be totally useless, but thats my idea why.

I'm pretty surface level with military history but I don't think it's so much that fortifications are moronic it's historically there are many instances of spending tons of money on perm. fortifications that then the enemy can plan for fairly comprehensively, thus making them less effective. The French experienced that in WW2.

That said, look at D-Day. Even with the US attacking the weakest part of the Nazi defenses in France it still cost us a whole lot to penetrate them.

The Maginot line did exactly what it was designed for though.

This, it actually makes a shitload of sense when you look at french geography and their experience in WW1.

      Anonymous

I think you misunderstand the French plan for WW2. The Maginot line was never meant to be an impenetrable barrier, it was strong enough to discourage Germany from attacking France directly, nothing more.
France expected another stalemate on the front and wanted to keep their own territory away from the war. The plan was to funnel Germany into Belgium and link up with the Belgian and Dutch armies there on defensible positions along river lines.
Now obviously none of this worked besides the funneling bit, but it's not the fault of the fortifications.

Guys in muddy holes cleverly disguised as fortifications are currently holding off the Russians. Well planned and built fortifications coupled with good SAM network coverage should haunt the nightmares of every last Russian capable of holding a firearm.

Good fortifications can slow or even halt an offensive allowing you to dedicate less manpower to higher enemy casualties. They can also force your enemy to take a path you want them to. They're basically a big trap that you have to trigger to get past. You have to knock out that AT bunker. You have to knock out that pillbox. You have to clear those mines. You have to move those dragons teeth. You have to get through that suspiciously open corridor. While you're doing any of that the defenders are likely raining shells from mortars and howitzers behind the lines using cheat sheets that have as close to exact information as it gets to casually blast your guys to paste while the guys on the line light up anyone they see.

Diplomatically it sends an undeniably clear message as far as how you feel about the people on the other side of that border and is an obvious warning that if they try to invade they're gonna have a bad time.

  42. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

They say this is to protect border from Russia but I think it's against migrants. If you lay a minefield against asylum seekers it's a warcrime, but if you lay a minefield against Russian threat and migrant happens to step on the mine it's unfortunate incident.

Maybe Italy should mine it's coast to defend its coast against "Russian submarines"?

looks like another passive road block. Where are the mines. Arent the poles part of that moronic princess diana anti infantry land mine ban pact like some of the balts eagerly jumped on back in the 90s? Essentially gimping themselves against a enemy that will rather spray the entire land full of butterfly mines then tolerate anybody prospering next to them

          >Arent the poles part of that moronic princess diana anti infantry land mine ban pact
yes we are, and sadly we only produce and develop AT mines and automated minelaying systems for them - those could probably be retrofitted to spread antipersonell sizes but sadly we have none of those
          - and politicians are as always moronic saying that we can revoke this ban at any time - but overlook that when we have imminent invasion it would be already too late to produce anything in needed numbers...

It is not worth it, that money woul be better spend on domestic ammo & missile production capacity
the only acceptable border fortification is a amerimutt tripwire force, minimum of 5 divisions (no, some fat golem sitting in Poznań, or servitor muttoids near Ukraine border, ie. behind Ukr army, do not count)
but that they will not provide, because they neither have nor are trying to build the capability to be both in Easter Europe and SE Asia
