Plastic will be obsolete

Some day in the near future, Metal Injection Molding, or even more advanced additive manufacturing technology will once again make metal framed pistols great again. The cost of production will be as low as, or possibly lower than injection molding plastic for pistol frames. At this point there will be a renaissance in pistol design and manufacturing. With innovative cellular structure techniques, we could even see stainless steel frames that are lighter than current clunky polymer designs. Ugly, clunky, and fragile plastic toy pistols will be relegated to the scrap heap of engineering history. Beautiful steel and alloy pistols will proliferate as the dawn of a new age unfolds! DA/SA hammer fired will once again reign supreme.

                Hey yeah I remember those! My uncle had one and I used to shoot it all the time on his ranch! Totally awsome pistols! I'd buy like 50 of them if someone started making copies. Clueless people think lesser known makers are low quality but that's just because they're brownoids with no discernment whatsoever to make their own correct conclusions about reality. That's why it makes them seethe when they see based value enjoyers, especially when it's whites doing it. I have a Zastava CZ-99 which is actually higher quality than the Sig P226 I used to have. My Astra A-100 is even better than that. There's just a ton of low cost high quality stuff out there.

          Fuuuuuck no. I don't think you can do solvent welding with nylon, either, can you? That's mainly an ABS thing, right? And spin welding doesn't get that deep, does it? You have those guns that melt staples into the plastic but I really doubt even that would be good enough. I'd genuinely be interested to see someone fix a broke Glock frame as I'm always interested in more ways of fixing plastic stuff in general but it's rare to have a broken frame at all regardless of polymer/metal.

          I haven't kept up with 3d printing in a while. Mostly because I own a Wells-Index milling machine and a bunch of tooling, so that hobby keeps me busy. But the progress in this area is FANTASTIC. IIRC wit laser sintering metal, it needs a protective atmosphere. Maybe some genius will figure out how to add some type of flux to the powder so that they don't need the atmosphere. Seems like that would make the technology much simpler and more affordable. That would be a great breakthrough for mankind, truly. Sub $1000 3D printers that make high grade steel and alloy parts. Honestly that would be a massive leap forward for all of humanity. What a wonderful time to be alive!!

          It's insane what's going on in the 3D printing scene anon. I remember when $300 Replicator clones were the new craziest thing ~10 years ago. Now we have $300 resin printers. Fricking nuts. I used to not think metal printing would be available at home but look at laser engravers/cutters, CNC (*wood and aluminum mainly), and resin printer prices over the past 10 years. It won't be popular due to the ventilation/outdoor requirements of such a thing but it'll be available and reasonably affordable. Maybe not $300 affordable but surprisingly affordable.

        It would be borderline impossible to weld an exploded metal frame handgun back together without completely ruining all of the tolerances and having something far far out of spec. It’s possible if you’re giga autistic but a giant waste of time and effort unless new production frames are impossible to get
        If your metal frame explodes, you’re going to buy a new metal frame. If your polymer frame explodes, you’re going to buy a new polymer frame, these are the same thing, but the polymer frame is cheaper to replace

      At some point laser sintering tech will be affordable for the home hobbyist. Unfortunately it’s rather cost prohibitive currently, which means people are getting more and more creative with polymer.
      Basically polymer guns will never go away, especially in a 3d printing world.

      I was thinking about that. It would be interesting, I wonder why nobody bothered. Mac-10 and Mini/micro Uzi are probably about the closest things to that. Oh yeah, there was a book on "home workshop firearms" where they have a design that is very makarov like that can be built up of stamped plates. It has all the drawings and stuff in there. Cool stuff. Manufacturers are probably paranoid about having the welds come undone or something

      The geometry of a pistol would make this very difficult to pull off effectively. Stampings work on things like receivers because they’re generally pretty simple enclosures with fairly continuous straight lines and geometry. For a handgun you’d have to do shit like weld on the grip to the frame, which would end up being more labor and work than casting, milling or forging. Defeats the whole purpose of stamping, which is fast cheap production at scale and lightweight construction

    Can designer that is focusing on DMLS here - I don't know that we'll see metal construction that can rival traditionally milled metal framed handguns anytime soon. While the technology is super impressive it's still in its infancy and remains cost prohibitive, not as much due to machine up front cost but the material cost - that that powdered metal for sintering is insanely expensive and as is, still produces a product that is somewhat porous, I'd be afraid of the potential for the frame cracking under fire. In regards to MIM, this has issues from both additive metal manufacturing and casting itself as you a.) need extremely expensive powdered material b.) still need a mold anyway, a part that has to be milled and has a limited shelf life in terms of output.

    This is just my super limited input on designing around/talking to a lot of people that work on newer additive manufacturing. I think it has the potential to produce parts in less stressed applications or accessories but I don't think it's going to be to the point where it's undistinguishable from a milled part any time soon, the porousness seems like a big part of that. I do think the rough texture issue is going to get ironed out soon without serious post processing.

      And for what it's worth, I think it's important to think about how these processes will be used in conjunction and stop thinking of things as outright replacements. Even at their apex, DMLS/additive metal printing will likely just exist alongside injection molding, CNC, batch casting, and high end 3D printing as they're capabilities with specified use cases and differing strengths and weaknesses.

      Even as material price and upfront machine cost/run time drops with more adoption you're still looking at a process that can't excel in everything. If anything you're creating something with another manufacturing step which might negate any cost benefit.
