Pirates off the coast of Somalia have hunkered down in a ship as Indian , Turkish and European navy ships have surrounded them . They placed multiple anti air craft guns , artillery guns and Heavy machine guns and have yet to still make demands. The owner of the ship btw doesn’t want navy to save his crew as well.

Someone needs to get around to pounding Somalia into the dirt, just wipe the whole slate clean.

      >Someone needs to get around to pounding Somalia into the dirt
it is basically just that already...dirt. It ranks 193 out of 193 on the human development index. Being such a shithole, joining a pirate gang is the only way to get up in life (or even make a living in some areas), i doubt pounding that place will make any difference.

They can still get boats and AKs, they clearly aren't stamped down enough.

Man if the US navy ever ceases to patrol the seas we'll see it turn into the fricking 17th century Caribbean. Just pirates out the wazoo.

Haiti gets a lot of aid for being such a small shithole since the US would prefer the Black folk stay there instead of becoming a problem for the region. Nigeria has massive chunks of fricking nowhere that also are deserts.

In case anyone was unclear, these are not normal Gulf pirates in rubber boats. Somalia is at war, and these are irregular troops for one side or the other: privateers, not pirates.

Italian plantation crops in the south and British livestock industry in the north deforested/destroyed the place and after independence the Soviets ruined any other chance Somalia had to develop, and since 1991 charcoal exports (YES RLY) have accelerated ecological collapse, combined with the worst drought in centuries.

How is it worse than Haiti?

          Anonymous

Haiti just got to the level of government control somalia has had for decades. In somalia, it's part of life, all you've known if you're born there. In Haiti, most people remember a time (like 5 years ago) when Haiti was a shithole but still mostly had law and order.

            Anonymous

Not really, the Somalian government has been mostly able to exert control over Mogadishu and the surrounding areas, in Haiti they killed the President and the PM just handed in his resignation to the gangs while living in Puerto Rico, it's much worse.

Sucks for them but it’ll save more lives in the long run. I would fully endorse being blown the frick up to spite my kidnappers. And establish that there will be 0 negotiations, 0 payout, and 0 chance of you surviving being a piratical shit. You will never get a penny of fricking Danegeld. Put my face on a plaque somewhere or some shit as commemoration and leave it at that. If you really want to have fun take some dna samples of what’s left of the pirates when you’re done and find out what village they’re from, then burn the fricker down. That’s what they used to do to communities that harboured pirates.

Also I'm just going to say it ship crew from non-western nations are treated fricking abhorrently and we should bar any non-western-rights-compliant flagged ships from docking at western ports while also charging the owners of ships that allow that shit to happen onboard. Seriously. Keep a contingent of navy personnel on standby to take over control of ships that are impounded or whatever and mercilessly imprison anyone who tries to keep a bunch of random Philippine sailors tied to a ship for 2 1/2 years over a nonpayment.

As if western shipowners are any better. Security is more expensive than playing the odds and hoping for the best. Until the odds raise high enough that insurance premiums make security worth the cost, protected ships will remain the minority. Not that laws help. Any security detail has to go jump through hoops just to make sure they don't run afoul of the law. Hence the sight of PMCs throwing guns into the ocean shortly before they enter borders.

Livestock industry just kills forests, it doesn't "destroy" the place unless the locals didn't use any British standard farming when they left and it went to shit

      >unless the locals didn't use any British standard farming
The British set up exchanges in the ports to buy livestock and as word spread, it congregated all the herders together which detrpyed the rangeland and caused deforestation to make more, rinse repat. The British never ran and ranchs or plantations, since Somalia was so insignificant and resource-poor to begin with and when they left the Soviets tried on a planned economy which further wrecked what little civic infrastructure they had, and there was never any effort on anyone's part to manage or remediate the damage done

It's been on a significant downward arc for a while, but that's the result of dedicated naval ops in the area stopping them, not the pirates stopping. It's funny because it's one of those things where you have the USN working alongside North Korea alongside India alongside China alongside Pakistan. For the exact same reason everyone except Iran wants the Youthis to frick off, everyone wants their shipping near Somalia to be unfricked with.
