Pet Food Shortages

Just a heads up.

I was just at Walmart getting cat food and an employee approached me with a warning. She had just been notified that a major cat food shortage is coming that’s going to last into 2024. She also said it’s going to start affecting the dog food as well. She recommended stocking up for many months, maybe even making homemade pet food (if you don’t already).

The shortages are already really bad, so I wonder how much worse it’s going to get. good luck everyone.

Is it safe to feed ground-up vaxxies to animals, or can they catch prions that way?

Hmm. I wouldn’t risk it. Vaxxed meat is pretty much useless, especially the organs full of spikes.

I have been swayed to the opinion that it would be unsafe to do so. Dead vaxxie meat will be mixed with manure and used as fertilizer instead.

I think they are cheapening the available product too. My cat stopped eating one of the two dried foods it was willing to eat. It doesn’t like any of the canned stuff ever. Anybody know of a good turkey or chicken dried food I can try. Pic was his favorite forever but now he won’t eat it.

We hae two cats and they've also become very picky about their food in a way they weren't before.

I think so too. My family has a lot of foster cats and ferals, and they were being fed Kirkland maintenance food from Costco. Recently they started to get all kinds of GI issues and so we had to switch to purina natural cat chow. But they still vomit a lot, so we’re not sure what to do.

My brother feeds his cat Blue Buffalo Wilderness and he seems to like it and not have any problems. That stuff is spendy though.

I've read that just switching a cat's food can cause it to vomit.

Good point. We’ll probably wait it out a bit and see if it stops.

          Just a heads up.
If you live in a rural area or near a rural area you can go to a local Co-Op and buy the ingredients to make your own dog food. For your cat you can always feed them cheap dollar store tuna. Also, table scraps can double as pet food if you properly prepare them.
Think like a farmer and your pets will always be well fed.

Quality post. They’ll be healthier too. Kibble isn’t good for them anyway.

I grew up on my grandfather's farm and he always hand mixed the food for all our animals, including the farm cats and dogs.
Co-Ops carry things like bone meal, dried milk, dog food, corn meal, supplements and pretty much everything you need for animals. You can mix dog and cat food yourself and it's just as good as any store bought brand, maybe better. Add in a few table scraps and your pet eats better than a lot of people do.

you need to at least look at the first few ingredients of what you are feeding your pets, because thats primarily what its composed of.
Im not well versed on best car brands, but I know dogs, and the two you just promoted are absolute goyslop for pets.
Nutro is a good brand for dogs in the midrange price, and Nature Wild is another good choice. I think both name cat food as well if im not misstaken, which id expect to have the same attention to ingredients.
You are doing your pets a disservice with that goyslop.

Get over it. Either pay for good shit or don't. I get hills science diet. The purple one. It's 19.99 for a not that big of a bag. Im switching one to prescription food though. Probably will stick with Hills for other dog.

          Anonymous

Prescription pet food usually isn’t any better than what you can get at the store in my experience, still full of corn and byproducts. And I’ve never been impressed with Hills ingredient list, corn is always in the top 3.

My main issue is the amount of cats we are feeding (we do cat rescue volunteer work). It’s easy to spend more for high quality when you only have one or two pets, but when you’re trying to feed ferals and foster cats it gets hard.

If you have the money then just buy fresh meat. Sliced turkey or chicken breast, even a little ground beef. Or try getting yourself a roasted chicken and shred a little for your cat.
Your cat will eat when it gets hungry enough regardless of what you feed it.

Your cat can't survive off only human cuts of meat, it needs taurine otherwise it'll become sick. Even the shittiest of dry cat food contains some taurine. If you wanna feed your cat raw meat it actually is cheaper if you buy in bulk, but you have to feed it a combination of certain cuts to simulate their diet. Cats in nature live off whole prey not just muscle meat.

About 5 times I found baby bunny rabbits in my garden with their brains eaten and nothing else. My cat doesn't hunt animals so I thought it was a hawk or something until I saw my cat viscously eating a bunny's brain. It was crack to her. I pulled her off but she really wanted at it.

Yeah they're predators people forget that because they're cute. Sometimes cats will kill for fun if they're already being fed well but sometimes what they eat is indicative of nutrient deficiencies. It's hard to tell tho because it's not like you can ask them. Kitty might've been gnawing on brains because they're very high in fat.

Probably, she eats the same 25lb bag of dry food all year long. I just googled it and apparently cats only eating rabbit heads is fairly common but yours is still the best explanation.

I never said to exclusively feed your cat only human cuts of meat.
The topic of the thread is pet food scarcity, and in a pinch you can feed your cat or dog meat or scraps if pet food isn't available to buy.

Profit maximization. If you're a business that can tolerate disruptions, that means you have slack somewhere. Slack means you're missing profits. So the tendency is to trim the slack and increase net profit, but then if a disruption occurs they can't handle it and (best case) they have to cut production, so supply shocks propagate all the way through the system.

True for cats, dogs need certain other vitamins that they can't make themselves. My dogs eat a mix of:
      >Meat, organs, bone & fat
      >Oily fish & shellfish
      >Spinach/thoroughly boiled greens
      >Mushrooms
      >Fruit (blueberries, apples, bananas)
      >Nut butter
      >Flaxseed oil
You need to pay attention to their skin, gums, noses and faeces and adjust if needed. My dogs are strong & healthy, my Airedale is the one of the only pups from the whole litter who has had no health complications at all - shit genetics and still a brute of a dog. I can give more in depth info if anyone is interested

Honestly you people laugh at cat food hoarders, but you really don't have enough cat food yourselves. The average person uses 1 can per day. If you have a family of 4 cats, that's 28 cans a week. Over 100 a month. Cat food will be worth its weight in gold in a few months, because everyone needs it.
