This is kind of sad. I used to look forward to this event and respect what it stood for, especially the year all the old allies marched together. It's a shame the same types of belief that started WW2 are causing conflict now. This parade is a sham.

It's the "banner of victory" but it is a good example of how much of a clusterfrick modern Russia is. Czarist icons and music, Soviet celebration, all through a very warped lens of how they view WW2. Where they conveniently forget everything prior to June 1941.

          Anonymous

Well, the GDR used some Prussian stuff, and apparently St. George's ribbon continued to be used in the USSR (the victory medal in the war) but yeah it dates to Tsarist times and has seen more public prominence under Putin.

One can hope that they are defeated and this stupidity is beaten out of them. Respect for the past is fine, but it is the past- Russia not an empire, nor a defender against aggression, they are a bully who is rightfully being bled dry by a weaker neighbor. There was no greater rejection of Russian revisionism than Ukraine fighting back.

I've read some comparisons between Putin's Russia to the French Second Empire under Napoleon III. There's several points of comparison, not just the weird mishmash of the ancien regime with inherited institutions of a collapsed revolutionary one (also went down in a military defeat).

A smart move would have been to honor the contributions of the west in their heroic effort to defeat fascism as an opportunity for soft power building in the west by impressing the role of Russian bravery in what westerners also consider their finest hour. Something like
      >the West, in their shared desire to rid the world of fascism, provided so much for our brave men who spilled their blood not only for our land, but for the good of all humanity
Too late for that now, but it would have been a great move. Like how the French, for all their faults, are very classy in how they honor the American and Commonwealth troops.

I don't think there is much enthusiasm from anyone in the Russian military. Even if they can still pull through with some kind of advance, they have lost so much more than they ever imagined. There also were only 3 parades during the soviet union's existence, not counting the postwar one. 1965, 1985 and 1990. It seems as the things were falling apart they got the memo and kgb picked a new icon to pull ziggers towards.

If you're besieging a fortified position and only capture "most of it" but your troops are still pinned there and can't advance past it that's not really much different fundamentally than from controlling "some" of it. The overall situation is the same: You're not done.

Why would they cancel the air show? The air force should be mostly intact as they've barely done anything in Ukraine. Also, how would Ukraine be able to do anything about planes flying over Moscow? Maybe im missing something obvious.

    Summary of Putin's speech:

    >Artemvosk is Russian clay, and its liberation is complete. The victorious forces celebrate as the Ukrainian nazis and NATO forces retreat or surrender en masse

    >VDV losses have been overstated as he has held them back for training in advanced combat techniques. Something about Naruto running and chakra stuff.

    >He is proud of his military leaders - mentioned Gerasimov, Shoigu, Zhukov and Vasilevsky by name. He is proud of his united people and their volunteer spirit and says the Ukronazis don't know what comes for them when the next volunteer waves come.

    >Praises the air and naval forces for their continued excellence.

    >Broke into a strange song/chant in a language that I (and it seemed many of those present) did not understand. Then just as quick as it started he paused, and went back to speaking.

    >He condemned Barak Obama, Theresa May and Helmut Kohl for their interference, and reiterated that he is a man of peace, else he would be liberating Germany, France and Belarus for their interference in a brotherly disagreement. Lukashenko was visibly disturbed.

    >Made a rambling condemnation of satanic, nazi and homosexual values and said the only same sex contact that god accepts is between soldiers.

    >He then made an anecdote about a hunter being chased by a naked woman of the wods and I didn't get it, maybe it was some sort of idiom, but he got really nervous and seemed to drop the story midway.

    >At the end, a couple men in uniform I didn't recognized ushered him to his chair - he struggled and spit on them but was too frail to fight. Once he was seated he went back to staring into the 1000 yard distance.

My Russian is not good enough to translate but the part about the chant and being escorted to a chair is true. He did sort of dry spit at one of the dudes and looked furious for a sec as he did, but calmed down just as suddenly.

I kind of wonder. My grandpa was being sexually abused at a nursing home and did that sort of thing - could Putin's handlers be molesting him? Something is fricked about it.

I'm gonna do a rough explination of what he said lads. Please read this. Attention grabbing image.

    >Putin said civilisation was again at a "decisive turning point", with a "real war" being waged against Russia
    >He claimed Russia was defending its sovereignty (LOL)
    >He likened Ukraine's democratically elected government to the Nazis defeated in World War Two, accusing the West of forgetting who defeated the Nazis (certainly not just USSR)
    >He claimed Russia wanted a "peaceful" future, and blamed the West for sowing seeds of "hatred and Russophobia"
    >He said everyone in Russia was united in supporting the soldiers taking part in Russia's "special military operation".

      Is this dude

      https://i.imgur.com/nJgPJd0.jpg

Once he was seated he went back to staring into the 1000 yard distance.

taking the piss out of his speech or is he somehow even more incoherent these days?

        >Today, civilisation is again at a decisive turning point. A real war has been unleashed against our homeland. We have repulsed international terrorism, we will protect the inhabitants of Donbas, we will ensure our security.
He then said Western globalist elites had decided to make the world hate Russia. He then said the Ukrainian people were 'hostages to a state coup'.

I'm shocked Putin didn't mention North Korea's speech where they said Russia would win.

Okay lads I've gone back and watched what he said, some more translations

    >“Today we have a real war waged against us but we will be defending ourselves against international terrorism.

    >“We do not have any people who will consider to be our enemies either here or to the west or to the east.

    >“We want to see our future peaceful and stable. We believe any ideology of supremacy is not acceptable to us, however, the Western elites and globalists are insisting on their exceptional character.

    >“They are provoking conflict and encouraging Russophobia and nationalism.

    >“They are destroying traditional family values that make a person a person.

    >“They are dictating will to the others, their rules to others. This is a system of robbing others and a system of violence.”

Did he mention any of the Soviet generals in his list of military greats? I just read that he didn't but Putin's regime has also thrown dirt on them so it's difficult to do without contradicting themselves, which goes to the contradictory nature of his regime with the mixed-up symbols.

Russia prides itself on "friendship of nations" and "multinationality", as soviet union did.

        Not as moronic as
        >They tell others what to do and impose their rules on us, this is robbery and violence
        and
        >What should happen is a return to the good ol' days of nation states bullying their weaker neighbors into submission, as is naturally ordained, and brutalizing them if they don't comply (like we're doing right now)

Not sure if Putin is actually going senile or just that pathetically obvious in his hypocrisy.

I was certain the parade would not look smaller. That they would just use the units retained for this very event. I don't know if they wanted to send the message of "All efforts are going to the operation" but the message I got is "We have fricking nothing left."
It would have been better to cancel the entire parade and make the statement "Let us all celebrate once again as victors at the end of the SMO"

This isn’t for morale, as if Putin and co care about that, it’s simply for Banan mans ego, like everything else, so they got what they could and did the parade, and even Putin could barely hallucinate it into being good
