Opinions on the CZ 557 Ranger?

Opinions on the CZ 557 Ranger? I live in a gay country that doesn't allow me to have center-fire, semi-auto rifles, but I want something I can use to defend myself.

What caliber and version? .223? I was considering one in 7.62x39 but that ammo is unobtanium here.

Decent rifle, but buy a Tikka instead

There's no Tikka dealer in my country. I could import it by special order but it would be a pain in the ass.

Oh yeah it does look very cute and handy. I'd love to own one, since I'll also hunt with it and deer and hog around here aren't very big.

          Your country is doomed.

I was considering leaving but the recent events made me stay. But like half of my friends already left for Europe/USA.

The original Mauser was controlled feed. This enables manual extraction and is easier on the brass, and some say it's more reliable. The downside: 90° bolt throw made use with a scope difficult.

So then push feed was born (pictured right). With push feed they were able to get the bolt to a 60° throw or better which is much nicer if you have a scope. But your brass will get flinged into the dirt if you don't put your hand there to stop it, so many handloaders don't like it.

And finally, Sako invented the 85 action (pictured left) which combines the benefits of both (manual extraction and reduced bolt throw) but at the cost of having the round eject at an angle, which can interfere with scopes. Search "sako 85 brass hits scope". Seems to affect only longer cartridges.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I will have to read a bit more about the types of actions out there. Would an actual Mauser (I mean, Mauser brand Mauser) be controlled feed?

a pump shotty or lever action would probably be better for self defense

I already have a shotgun, but it's a O/U. A pump action wouldn't be very useful in my situation.

I'm not sure. Gun companies stopped making Controlled Feed because they are more expensive, maybe Mauser did the same.

how do you figure? it's higher capacity than an O/U and faster to work than a bolt action.

Excellent little rifle! Buddy of mine has one. In 7.62x39 it makes for an effective mid-range deer rifle.

    Push feed garbage.

Can you get a CZ 600 series? It's a copy of the Sako 85 action (semi controlled feed with reduced bolt throw).

Why is push feed bad? I thought it's what the original mauser action used?
