it's too fricking huge for what it can do, has shit radar and if you are talking about the 27 variant specifically can't even launch soviet fox3 missiles, stuck with just fox1s and fox2s

in BVR it's target practice for amraams and there is not going to be a chance for it to engage at fox2 distance

but it looks fricking cool and that's all that matters

  7. 1 year ago

A bad idea, it was supossed to be the Russian F-15 but can't have medium-range missiles on a time where fights closer than ten clicks just weren't gonna happen unless it was an extreme case (like those Israelis who got from their base and slammed four syrians while they were being bombed).

Probably a killer dog fighter. Too bad air battles aren't based around cannons anymore. Reading about the SU27s embarrassing performance at international exercises or during various procurement trials really killed my boner for it. Designed to kill F15s, would die before getting chance to close in.

        Anonymous

        >spamming about last gen fighters turn rates

Even that was a joke as US fighters traditionally had better roll rates. Against a superior turning fighter it was just a matter of going vertical then rolling onto the tail of the bogie or sliding to the outside of the turn in a lag pursuit.

The latest Chinese Flankers are unironically better than the Su-35 in a number of ways, notably actually having AESA radar

Hey, can't fault them for trying

good luck trying that in the black sea kek

I'd say the West won that clash, lol.

you see anon, Russian soldiers have negative existential value so their deaths actually result in a net profit for the motherland regardless of whether they kill the enemy or not
that's why they're obsessed with drawing their enemies into huge attritional battles and have zero regard for operator ergonomics or safety for their equipment

  10. 1 year ago

Its nearly as big as a fricking B-17 and has the RCS to match. Shit radar nowhere comparable to western ones. Its cannon fodder to any reasonably modern opponent. It will be detected and fired upon before it can lock up its opponent.

It does look kinda cool from some angles though.

Great tanker aircraft, has the entire fuel capacity of the eagle with bags entirely in its internal tanks. sucks at everything else because everyone that builds or buys planes already has counters to them in countries that would fly against flankers.

      Anonymous

The fuel capacity is a plus...for power projection not currently needed.

If it's not thirsty that's good for long CAP sorties (which use up hours between repairs and inspections, that gets expensive quick even with US assets).

Any Anons know what typical Russian aircraft engine inspection schedules and work performed look like? I've seen figures like 500 flight hours between SU-27 engine overhauls which isn't very good but it's not the hours (swapping engines is easy enough on any fighter you don't have to split in the middle like 1950s machines) but how quickly you run low on spare engines.

This is a pretty solid documentary on the development of the plane. I wish more airplane documentaries are done this way. Over 2 hours talking about a single airplane, from predevelopment to modernization upgrades.

They have done loads of shit to "provoke" NATO.
But NATO isn't full of psychopaths, so we deliberately palm away these provocations.
If the US wanted to argue that deliberately downing their drone is an act of war then they could. If Poland wanted to argue that the missile killing their farmers was an act of war then they could. If basically everyone wanted to shoot down Russians invading their airspace then they could. But NATO has very little to gain from great power war. The only way it would actually have a chance of happening is if a member was straight up invaded, Feb 24th-style.

The U.S. can enforce a no fly zone, but the main issue is nukes. From what I heard, the russians are very quick to go from throwing rocks to throwing nukes and the U.S. doesn't want to risk snowballing like that.

Ukrainians are using old soviet surplus but still able to make the airspace contested. America can enforce a no fly zone and destroy all anti air assets.
              >muh iraq
Iraq had the most sophisticated AA network at the time. Baghdad was considered to be the most heavily defended city in the world and U.S. aircrafts were able to waltz in and bomb the shit out of it. Iraq had more sophisticated AA systems than russia at this point.

Russia is no different when it comes to revealing its weaknesses and exploits in its defense network because aa networks is a tricky thing to set up.

Soviets had to completely reevaluated air defense concepts after that war. In their view, their air defenses were rendered effectively obsolete.

                Anonymous

You and everyone not personally involved in US military aviation at the time cannot have a clue how much work went into destroying/disabling Iraq defenses. That's because most of that work was done over the years before Desert Shield during the Reagan buildup. Words cannot convey the experience of late Cold War overhaul of the armed forces after the Hollow Force era.

The US flew enormous daily training sortie loads and had far more frequent exercises than today. We were preparing to halt the Red Army in the Fulda Gap and Saddam happened get froggy at the worst possible time. Constant practice at killing all things Russian is why that incredibly complex operation went so well. Everything but prepositioned stocks had to cross an ocean (or sometimes the Med) to get there from bombs to asswipe.

When we deployed (I went with the first F-16 squadrons to UAE, 33rd and 17th bringing a mix of Shaw jets) it went as or more smoothly than peacetime TDYs because at that point everything was instinctive. FMC rates matched or topped peacetime. Moving multiple cities worth of humans with their gear, building those cities then fighting from them made taking out Iraq look easy on CNN. Spectators just see the end result.

              lmao
come now, there is literally nothing in the air right now that beats the American Air Force.
There could be, in the future, and some missiles render the air force kinda obsolete, but in a pure head-to-head, air-to-air engagement, America wins 10 times out of 10.
that doesn't mean there couldn't be casualties or individually bad battles/sorties, but the overall air war is unwinnable for the opposition. It just can't be done, they're higher tech than yours, and there's more of them. Normally it's one or the other, when it's both you've just been eclipsed militarily and it's time to throw in the towel.

Someone REALLY doesn't understand the unwritten but necessary and very real Cold War customs which are why the war hasn't escalated.

US power is considerable but there are many reprisal options so it's far wiser to fight by proxies in limited wars.

Russians always accusing others of what they do themselves is far too accurate. All I see currently is 50 kopeck posters spamming this as an example of Russyia Strong.

No doubt it will end up being like the Donald Cook incident or HMS Defender FONOP where vatniks will use it for years to come as an example of mighty Russia dunking on NATO despite it being in reality an impotent response to NATO violating Russian claimed sovereignty and meaningless to them getting shot out of the air on day 1 of a war against NATO.

At least in the Cook and Defender incidents we didn't have real combat proofs of how useless the RuAF is as a massive counter-example.

It doesn't need enemy planes to crash

Keep shit real. Every AF loses a few. The US in the late Cold War as predicted to and did lose about a squadron per year or about 24 fighters.

The only way to lose none is fly none. Noobs have no idea which is why they imagine a crash isn't just the cost of doing business. Fighters are not repeat not airlifters and Class A rates prove it.

It's just underage /k/iddies who have never even been in so much as a fist fight talking shit about things they know nothing about.
        I mean read this shit

The U.S. can enforce a no fly zone, but the main issue is nukes. From what I heard, the russians are very quick to go from throwing rocks to throwing nukes and the U.S. doesn't want to risk snowballing like that.

This dipshit actually thinks we could enforce a no fly zone over ALL OF FRICKING RUSSIA
I mean frick. This is what happens when you raise a generation on nothing but propaganda and hand everything to them while not asking them to work for jack shit in return.

Okay, Jack Hamburger of Ohio Oblast. It's certainly that everyone but you is moronic, and not that Putin is a monkey with a decent chance of mashing the nook button once he realizes that Russia is, in fact, not stronk.

prettiest sukhoi, almost in the same tier of sexy as F-15.
Capability-wise seems OK but not on par with western equipment. However, between the lax maintenance, inadequate training, low pilot flight hours and and sub-par weapon systems generally fielded with the flanker I kinda think it's mostly not the airframe's fault.
    It's my favorite Soviet fighter.

I really like this pic, it's high quality and the ass is done just right. SU22 is a decent jet too, not sure why it's always overlooked in favor of the Mig.

it's a potjemkin plane. They knew they had shit tech for a 4th gen so they made something that would impress the avarage joe with its looks and turning ability, while neglecting things that actually matter for a plane.
    Same for su57
