it really isn't worth all the paperwork and bureaucracy to spend 90 minutes in the air. military or commercial, all of the fun has been sucked out of being a pilot. 1903-1983 were the golden years.

It forced the United States to rely on the petrodollar to maintain the dollar as the world's reserve currency, giving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia massive bargaining power as its main ally in the middle east. With all the massive amount of capital Saudi Arabia managed to gain, the Bin Laden Construction group became exorbitantly wealthy as the Kingdom's main construction contractor. This gave Muhammed Bin Laden's least favorite son, Osama, money to become the main financier of extreme Islamic groups during the Jihad against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. The massive influence he got allowed him to create his own group Al-Qaeda, which led to the 9/11 attacks.

So now you can't even pilot a commercial airliner while drunk or allow a cute teenage passenger onto the wienerpit to give you and the co-pilot handjobs.

            Thanks, Obama!

The US was a net exporter of oil, though. It had the power.

What caused Osama Bin Laden's rise was the Gulf War. It upheaved the delicate balance of power between Iraq and Iran, which lead to Iran becoming the dominant player and funding the Al Qaeda group in Afghanistan.

                Yeah, no.

The frick you talking about bro? Al-Qaeda is a Sunni group, the only thing they hate more than the US and Israel is the Shia nation of Iran. In fact, Al-Qaeda is at war right this instance with the backing of Saudita Arabia and the US against Iranian funded groups in the Yemeni proxy war.

What is the Breton Woods agreement?
Who were the Afghanis fighting and why, that they needed Laden money?
Would exporting vast amounts of oil for a century, in a world run on hydrocarbons, by any chance generate wild amounts of capital that could be reinvested regardless? Even if the deals were all being made in gold backed fiat?

This is a brainlet, contrarian take. No matter the route, its location in space and time, guaranteed US hegemony over the world (unless it civil war'd itself). Its the safest, stablest, resource and food rich country on the planet and unless you could avoid the collapse of the great powers via ww1, the world would always come to choose US as the premiere place to store and invest their surplus good deed vouchers. Meaning the USD would always be the one currency to have trade be dominated by.

I'd push that to 1991 but interested in why you pick 83 as the cut-off (I go with 1991 bc of the tailhook fallout).

Oh no, it's cloudy or I'm over 5km away!

I've spent hundreds of hours flying around in single and twin engine high performance aircraft. it's whatever.

I watch birds all the time. It's so melancholic how they just take flight and and navigate the wind currents...

Flying in commercial airplanes is fun. Especially the take off.

      >The anticipation on the runway
      >The spool up of the engines, culminating in a roar
      >The rumbling down the the tarmac
      >Getting pushed into your seat by the Gs
      >The change in gravity as the plane lifts off

      It's the best.

You would make a ship sail against the winds and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck? I have no time for such nonsense.

My gift to industry is the genetically engineered worker, or Genejack. Specially designed for labor, the Genejack's muscles and nerves are ideal for his task, and the cerebral cortex has been atrophied so that he can desire nothing except to perform his duties. Tyranny, you say? How can you tyrannize someone who cannot feel pain?

I could take or leave flying, honestly. It's just not that captivating. I have flown in plenty of things, I'm not scared of flying.
I would probably care more if I was a pilot.
