>On Nov 15, 2022, around 5:20 p.m., Idaho County Dispatch received a call from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center.

>On Nov 15, 2022, around 5:20 p.m., Idaho County Dispatch received a call from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center. They had received an SOS from a Garmin Inreach device belonging to Jonathan Conti, videographer/YouTuber, of Boise. The location given was just north of the Walton Lakes, which is south of the Powell Ranger Station, between the Elk Summit Rd (Forest Service Road 360) and Tom Beal Park Road (Forest Service Road 362).

>Idaho County Dispatch used the link provided by IERCC to message with Conti. Conti stated he needed rescued as he had snowshoed in, but had dropped down into a canyon that he couldn’t climb out of due to the snow being too thick. He had food, water and shelter and was safe for the night. He had parked his vehicle on Elk Summit Road about five miles from his location and was not familiar with the area, but told dispatch that he could make it to Walton Lake if that was a better rescue spot.

>On Nov. 16, 2022, Idaho County Sergeant Keith Olsen and Idaho County Deputy Stan Denham responded at first light. Idaho County Dispatch advised Conti to head to the Walton Lakes Trailhead, which was about half a mile from his location, and gave him coordinates to where he could be picked up by the deputies. Idaho County Deputies left the Powell Ranger Station by snowmobile on the Tom Beal Road. They cut numerous fallen trees out of the road to get to the Walton Lakes Trailhead.

    >During this time, Idaho County Dispatch kept sending Conti messages with directions on how to get to the trailhead to meet the deputies and Dispatch continued to get responses from him stating “What are you talking about?”, “I feel like I should wait at this lake,” “I need someone to come get me at this lake, that’s why I called for a rescue.” Dispatch urged Conti to get to the 362 Road and to go slow and steady and take his time as there were no alternative options. Conti advised he wanted a helicopter because walking out was impossible as there was five feet of snow, and the trail was gone. Dispatch again urged and explained to Conti how to get to where he would need to meet the deputies and that it was not possible for a helicopter to land on a frozen lake.

    >Deputies could only get so far by snowmobile as they hit a rock face and would need him to hike up to meet them. Conti replied, “Fine, but I feel like I’m walking to disaster.” Conti then walked about a third of a mile in the wrong direction before going back to Walton Lake and sending a message to Dispatch at about 12:45 PM stating that he had stopped to set up camp as he was out of food, out of energy and was scared.

      >With this information, deputies left the trailhead and hiked down to Conti’s location which was approximately half a mile in approximately two feet of snow. Conti was found to be in good physical condition with no injuries and still had plenty of food and provisions in his backpack. Deputies helped Conti gather up his camp and walked him to the trailhead. He was taken by snowmobile back to the Ranger Station where the deputy’s patrol vehicles were parked, and then given a ride back to his vehicle on Forest Service Road 360.

Notice the time stamps on the messages he shows onscreen at around 18:05. He shows the messages out of order in an attempt to make the cops look worse. They say they’re on the trail and coming to him and then 20 mins later he sets up camp for the night? And expects them to stay there with him?

This guy lies numerous times in his video to make his situation appear like dire straits. Worst being how many times he gave the wrong elevations and terrain features, while doing a voice over from the comfort of his own home with no state of duress whatsoever. I could forgive this if he was in the field and disorientated but it's clear he is grossly moronic.
      >Plans for a 4 day hike, states he packs for 5,6, even 7 days.
Doesn't throw another gas canister in his pack. Doesn't bring any food besides dehydrated meals. Does not mention bringing a map.
      >pic rel
From when he displays a map at ~6:45, this is at 46.44164, -114.69418
      >8500 ft Pass
It's 6600 ft. The highest point on his planned route is 6800 ft. The highest point on the map he posts is 8000 ft which is not on his route.
      >The TH is set at 6100 ft and the lake at 6200 ft and you don't take into account the mountain at 7000 ft that's in between you. At the start of day 3 I hiked over that 7000 ft cliff there. (Glass brain sentences)
WHAT MOUNTAIN??? WHAT CLIFF??? The only peak he could be talking about is between the 2 lakes which he didn't make it to before he got "Lost."
      >Had to drop 1000 ft in a half mile, think of me rolling down a hill.
The farthest descent on his route is 600 ft. Clearly he didn't bring a map because he can't read one.
      Says multiple times
      >KNEE DEEP SNOW
      >HIP DEEP SNOW
Never films himself in snow above his mid-calf. The snow on the frozen surface of the creek shows it's ~2 ft deep.
      >I decided to scout the lake... like a real outdoors man in this situation would do.
      LOL
      >Shows landscape shot pointing east from the slope to road 362.
Strange, landscape looks to gently undulating with no odd cliffs or sharp peaks where he came from.
      >They doxxed me
Posts under his real name on several sites. Cueballs shouldn't have posted anything they should have just fined him for the trouble and moved on. There are no heroes in this story both parties are foul.

What's even stupider is that how easy he is to "rescue" just entirely contradicts how much danger he was in. They literally just walk up to him and he walks out with them.

Thanks for the giggles and thorough analysis anon, I also thought that this guy was an ultra giga moron for similar reasons. The absolute funniest to me was like you said about scouting the lake, peak LOL, but just prior to that he was squawking about how you have to stay in the same location during a rescue so that help can find you. Lmao even the dispatcher told him
        >wtf you’re going the wrong way bro
And then he decided to set up camp lol

I absolutely agree with the cops blasting this guys name, profession, and the details of moronation specific to this case. The reason is that they knew this guy was a YouTuber with a decent audience reach and that he was at least possibly filming them during the walk out, he had a camera around his neck in the cop selfies. Those cops had first hand experience with this giga moron and wanted to make sure to get ahead of whatever story he might have been trying to spin. By this time he had already proven himself to be moronic and manipulative. Did you notice he presented some of the texts out of order in an effort to make himself look less manipulative?

I remember seeing this come up in my recommended and thinking, This has to be someone who is either enough of an butthole to call on emergency rescue for something he could easily get out of barring some serious injury, or he has to be stupid enough to get himself into a situation where he can't get out of with even a modicum of thinking or brute force. Either way I knew, since it was a first-hand account rather than a news report, that I would wish him dead by the end of it. So i didnt watch it, but thanks for confirming this.

          >had shelter
          >had a PLB
          >was not injured
          >was not lost
His own shitty self-defeating attitude got the best of him. Not every county has a search and rescue team with helicopters and shit as he would find out when two normal police officers came to bail him out.

            >They cost $350 + $12.99 a month subscription.
He says right in the video that he pays $50/month for his subscription. But that's besides the point. The Garmin only guarantees that you'll be able to send out an SOS. They can't control how the local authorities handle the situation.

            >had food
He had dehydrated meals and no fuel to cook it

            >was not lost
He was lost, since he couldn't find the trail due to the snow, and was stuck deep in a canyon with no feasible way out. You don't just start blindly walking up snow covered mountains hoping you'll find the trail in situations like that. That's how you become a statistic.

            >His own shitty self-defeating attitude got the best of him
I'd say his own inexperience was the biggest problem. He didn't read his topo map correctly, he didn't bring enough fuel, he didn't bring any real survival food (probably an ultralight gay who thinks pemmican, cheese and cured meat are too heavy)

            > Not every county has a search and rescue team with helicopters and shit as he would find out when two normal police officers came to bail him out.
I can guarantee you that if it was some 20 year old girl they would have shown up in a chopper and carried her out on their shoulders.

Yeah Idk, I have one, with rescue insurance and I pay $12.99 a month
              >He had dehydrated meals and no fuel to cook it
He had access to water, he could have cold soaked his meals. I cold soaked my ramen and beans on the PCT. He could have started a fire as well, assuming he had a lighter, which he probably did.
              >He was lost, since he couldn't find the trail due to the snow
I dont really consider that lost. He lost the trail, but he was not "lost", he knew where he needed to go, knew the direction and distance.
              >I'd say his own inexperience was the biggest problem
I think his inexperience got him in trouble, but his shitty attitude is what made everything worse.
              > he didn't bring any real survival food (probably an ultralight gay

                >He could have started a fire as well, assuming he had a lighter, which he probably did.
He most likely did not have the skillset to start a fire in a situation like that. Otherwise he probably would have. That's why everyone who goes on expeditions like that should learn some bushcrafting skills first.

                >He lost the trail, but he was not "lost", he knew where he needed to go, knew the direction and distance.
We're arguing semantics. If you're in a situation where you don't feel you're capable of progressing, you're as good as lost and you should stay put until someone comes to help you. He was right about the staying where you are part. If the SAR dudes were telling him he could hike up to them, then surely they were capable of hiking down to him (which they would have done if they were professionals and not some lazy boomer police).

I mean I'm not trying to defend the guy too much, he clearly fricked up and is a goofball for getting himself into that situation. But everyone makes mistakes. People shouldn't be publicly made fun of by their rescuers, those who are meant to serve and protect.

The officers weren't trained in SAR, they were just regular sheriff's officers.

i watched this whole video a couple days back, im fairly certain he did this stunt to drive clicks but it go the way he liked. if you look at the map he chose an ideal spot for them to send a heli for evac(a frozen lake),he immediately asks for helicopter and they tell him to frick off almost right away. they then ask him if hes okay for food he says yes, then he "runs out of fuel" and now doesnt have food which is when the cops actually gave a shit enough to rush to him on snowmobiles.

on the other hand the cops sounded like huge homosexuals. if he legit was worried for his survival and in over his head then these guys acted extremely unprofessional. they waffled about forever about how they planned to get to him, didnt give clear plan to him, didnt follow search and rescue protocols and then got b***hy when they finally found him and then took selfies like narcissistic homosexuals to publically shame him for boomers on facebook.

both parties were moronic and doesnt bode well for my confidence as a garmin inreach user worried about a injury or other SHTF in a solo setting

      >if he legit was worried for his survival and in over his head
He wasn't though, he was just some homosexual trying to make a youtube video for clicks. Even if he was "pretending" to be worried, people can pick up on that OVER THE FRICKING PHONE HE WAS TALKING TO THEM ON. He probably kept asking for a helicopter, and they should've given him a ride and then charged him the full price of it.

        >dude just hike the small trail out
that was a trail that was marked in summer and is now completely covered in snow other than maybe some markings on trees(if any even existed) and was extremely steep, not a great time to do risky moves when you are running low on energy and fuel to cook your food

        >dude just melt snow and eat your prepackaged meals cold
do you know how long and inefficient this is going to be and potentially dangerous to cool your body temperature just to get some water out of it

he didnt talk to them over the phone you moron, he talked to them via text message via garmin. they dont know what fricking state hes in, he asked once and they said they dont do heli extracts.

They only walked to the snowmobiles and then drove out. They had to cut down like 30 trees just to make it walkable.

What is walkable and what is snowmobile-able are two entirely different things. Generally it is better to just walk around, over, or under a downed tree.

Because when there’s a wailing homosexual in the woods aiming his daddy’s lawyer at your 6 man sheriffs office you shouldn’t waste time. If they had to have walked in I think it should be firmly within the law that each officer be allowed to strike him 1 time per mile. Inexperienced underprepared ‘influencers’ need to stay indoors

Haven't posted ITT yet. I'm none of the (You)s that the rest of (You) are arguing with.

This unprepared, inexperienced wimp is a YouTuber who set out to make money by recording himself engaged in survivalist activities in the woods during the wintertime. That makes him 1.) a public entertainment figure who 2.) was out in the woods in a "professional" capacity.

Because of this, I find it entirely acceptable for the sheriffs, the general public, YouTube users, and everyone else alive to ridicule him as a fool. The world needs more ridicule to minimize stupid people doing stupid things.

It's one thing for you to expect rescuers who have to come bail out some unprepared, non-map-reading private citizen who overestimated his abilities to respect their privacy, not openly ridicule them, etc.

But that wasn't this guy. He was trying to portray himself as some sort of woodsman when he clearly wasn't, and he was doing os publicly, for profit. He made a goofball of himself and deserves to be mocked.

As a matter of fact, in my opinion the state shouldn't be obligated to rescue anyone at all. People love to complain about the big and oppressive police-state nanny government until they fall down and twist their ankle, and then the government can't come to bail them out with a fleet of gunships, an airborne division, and ten pallets of emergency supplies fast enough.

        >I’m sorry what? So if you’re an actual moron with zero skills it’s okay to waste everyone’s time
I never even implied such a thing. I don't think it's okay to waste search and rescue resources at all, no matter who you are. If you, a private citizen, end up needing rescue, you should call for that rescue; but you should also feel ashamed of yourself, learn from your mistakes, and not overestimate your abilities moving forward.

The guy in the OP who needed rescue made himself a public figure, for profit, and the situation he needed rescuing from was the very same one that he created for himself in order to turn that profit. For this reason, it's okay for everyone to ridicule him.

However, it's never "okay" to waste search and rescue resources. Never said it was. In fact, people these days are needing rescuing so much more often than in past decades that authorities are talking about charging people for their rescues.

That's fine with me. Let them charge. If you can't afford recreational rescues, then make sure you don't need one by being prepared, or just don't go. Assuming the government will bail you out is a dumbass way to go through life anyway, and besides: sometimes they won't be able to due to weather and/or terrain conditions.

          >no insurance
          >no law enforcement
Exceptionally unbased. In order for that to happen, you would have to restrict people from engaging in free trade of those things, which is asinine and defeats the entire purpose of opt in taxes.

          >(don't even give me that private healthcare bs)
Explain yourse, this makes no sense. Most healthcare is private healthcare. Very few countries have a nationalized medical industry.

Like seriously, insurance is overwhelmingly a private industry. And law enforcement is also exceptionally private industry, despite not being to an overwhelming degree.

What do those three things have to do with taxes.

As others have said, it’s pretty clear that OP video guy wanted the chopper to land on the lake. If you wanted to ‘scout’ why not scout TOWARDS the trail your rescue is coming down. Unless he wanted to stay near the lake for cool chopper thumbnail pics and to enshrine himself forever as the greatest of all Garmin shills

Another reason I think he did it for the views was because the first video in the recommended next to his video is "I pressed SOS on my InReach and a helicopter showed up?!?!" with some homosexual doing a goyface and a helicopter in the background, and that video has 100x more views that his whole channel.

      >There was a woman that died like half a mile from the trail and no one was able to find her for a month, despite her staying alive
This is why I tell people on this board to learn to use a topo map and base plate compass if they plan to leave sight of an established trail.

It bears repeating: You can get lost just out of sight of an established trail, and a topo map and compass have infinite battery life. To make best use of those old-school tools, you do need to keep track of where you are as you hike in at least a general sense, but even if you don't, at least with the compass you can follow a heading or bearing, even if you can't manage to estimate or triangulate your precise position on the map.

Without at least a compass that you know how to use, you can't reliably head in any direction at all as you'll veer off-course. You may die. You can learn to use this shit with a Google search and some practice, so do it.

This is what his exit route looks like with an ascent of a measly 281m. It's about 2 miles?? He had 2 hours until darkness, even with the snow he had snowshoes so he could at least get within earshot of the boomer cops.

If he didnt want to chance it he could stay a night at the lake with access to water and shelter he would certainly survive and hike out the next morning? WTF would you hike into the snow if you are mentally unprepared for things to go wrong and get panicky at the first signs of trouble. I bet if he didn't have the safety net of communicating with SAR he would just man up and hiked to safety.

Weak human beings like this used to be naturally selected out of the gene pool.
Thanks to "modernity" and "rescue" forces, we're seeing a level of dysgenics that shouldn't be naturally possible.

Anyone with a crippling disease (in this case, mental moronation) gets to reproduce, and taint the gene pool further, weakening society even more.
All of this degeneracy stacks up, and up, and up, until eventually, the few remaining strong individuals in society can no longer support the enormous snowball of obese, bloated, diseased, undernourished, myopic, mentally ill, disabled beings, and everything collapses.

It will be for the best though - as they say, everything in this world is in its rightful place.

My take at the time was that the guy was a genuine Dunning Kruger doesn't-know-he-doesn't-know-shit type of guy. He even admits in the video to not understanding that the path to the lake actually had a goddamn MOUNTAIN in between - I guess no one told him how height curves work? But I thought "OK, he got out alive, the SAR guys were a bit unprofessional, and he seems to have learned his lesson".
