This has been true ever since they took those offshore platforms and ACK'd a bunch of platforms on Crimea
That was the critical moment puccia just lost the ability to cover everything that needs to be covered. They have a choice of abandoning certain areas to get assfricked or spreading themselves too thin which might allow more platforms to get hit and further exacerbate the issue.

Pin-dick dictators tend to build huge structures to feel important and show how awesome their empire is. Putin is more moronic still, because he built that stupid fricking mall for himself only and tried to hide it away and then Navalny fricking outed this unfathomable bullshit dreamhouse of his. Which makes this THREE times as moronic as normal dictator moronic.

Most of /k/ (and most people, tbh) tend toward writing off authoritarianism as something that only arises in ignorant, easily manipulated populations when evil people take advantage of them, but this isn't actually the case. The truth is, it can establish itself, even and especially in well educated, well-ordered societies. In fact, an authoritarianism arising within a (relatively) well developed society is usually more complete than your typical tinpot and flavor-of-the-week 3rd world strong man or junta. The largest and longest lasting example of this is the Eastern Bloc of the Cold War. There, authoritarianism became so ingrained in their societies, that despite them being better educated and more prosperous than much of the world at that time, the system still perpetuated. It wasn't that they were stupid, it's that Soviet Totalitarianism was so ubiquitous within society as to become almost equivalent to it. What's created then is an authoritarianism so all-encompassing, that even the "leaders" of the system become victims of it.
While most of Eastern Europe was eventually able to leave this legacy behind, things were different in Russia. As the central hegemonic power heading this system, much of its prosperity was tied to its existence. That's in part why Russia had such a rough 90s. It wasn't able to pull itself out of the post-Soviet collapse shock the same way most other Eastern European countries were. So when Russians saw the new system and compared it to the old, they assessed that things were better under the stronger state, and they were fine to give power to the man promising to bring it back. What exists now in Russia is a Soviet-lite system. The power of the state is less of a universalism than in the past, and the leaders of the executive are certainly now more responsible for the system's existence, but the manner in which authoritarianism exists in Russia is much alike to the old.

Systems that base themselves of killing the shit out of educators, fabricators, scientists, artists and keeping everything aloft on bullshit always suffer, because they take a loan on reality and back it on bullshit until reality catches up to them. Happened in near damn every country there ever was. The trick is learning the first time and not doing it ever again. Bullshit is bullshit and it's dangerous whatever it is. Leftist bullshit, rightist bullshit, social bullshit, historical bullshit, religion-nationality-language-as-people bullshit. All of them lead to a fricking frick up that always caps off with failure. And then, there's two viable questions - who's to blame or... OR what to do. First one is popular. Then the bullshit restarts. The second requires some soul searching and if that doesn't happen - bullshit starts again with all too predictable results.

What's even more a shame now that the cycle's repeated again in Russia is that it no longer has an international satellite system to leech its wealth off of. It's been noted many times here, within the media, and elsewhere, how neglected the Russian countryside is outside the major metropolises of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Where in Soviet times, all of Russia acted as the "imperial core" (to use a gay term), Russia now only has Russia and Belarus. It's been forced to cannibalize itself to prop up its post-Soviet social contract, keeping the "core" prosperous while the "empire" is exploited and neglected. It's almost never a good idea to attempt divining the future when talking about these topics, but this obviously isn't a sustainable system. I know that TZD is the meme here, but just as democracy is never an invincible system, authoritarianism isn't either, it's not something that can be written into metaphysical law and attached permanently to a population. It's impossible to know what post-Putin Russia may look like, but treating Russians and Russia as an inevitable enemy is as short sighted as the Russian system itself. I don't think pessimism is necessarily any more realistic than it's opposite.

We Balts have been treating the Russian government as the enemy, not Russians. Sure, they've been told that everyone in the west hates them and acted as we are the enemy, but we knew better because we went through the same bullshit. That's how we instantly knew when Putin came to power that shit is going to go down as it is currently going down. Problem is, they have given away everything to Putin in hopes he will leave them alone as used to be back in Soviet times. But for fricks like him it's never enough. We feel for Russians, alright? We always did, but it's like trying to cure a zombie. They've LEARNED to hate the west because we were always out to get them, no reason given. Putin took away their history, their culture and enshrined himself as their one true and only future. And that's the horrible tragedy of it all. That's why that fricker and his corrupted temple has to be burned down to the ground. His fricking grave should be salted. All of these mindnumb vatniks and willing shit-stirrers who without any scruples want to make a buck and would sell their own mother are the enemy. The fricks in the Kremlin are the enemy. Russians are hostages. But until they understand that - there's no way to do anything. Not even good should be done by force. But by force you can destroy evil. And that should be absofrickinglutely done, no matter the cost. Because leaving it be will be way more costly.

There's a video somewhere where he was singing "On Blueberry hill" to an obese frenchman and it's as cringe as you'd expect. Goddamn, I'm surprised a turd like him, with all the polishing he's been given still clings to this existence. You don't just leave the ships in port totally unmanned and unarmed unless they're actively undergoing maintenance or upgrades.

If you have a large amount of friendly AD assets nearby you MIGHT decide to forgo any naval AD, but I wouldn't expect that to be the case russia. Especially near an active warzone.

I absolutely love the idea that Russia went so hard on the offensive that they've no defense to spare. Its the absolute least thought out thing that they could have done, because it all traces back to the original folly that they'd be done in 3 days.
Instead they've leaned so hard onto offensives and meat waves that their regional defense, which was possibly already in shambles, is now certainly in shambles.

Do Russian boomers still need to surface to fire? How reliable in conflict are they nowadays, without any covering air?

Russian boomers don't need to surface to fire and can even break the arctic ice to launch their missiles. The bigger problem with them is that half of their fleet is 40 year old and is essentially mothballed. The remaining subs are fairly new but are too few to hide from numerous USN attack subs that can track them, rendering them a non-issue.
        https://ridl.io/russian-strategic-forces-after-the-start-treaty-the-problem-of-zombie-submarines/

Their launchers are their primary nuclear arm, hosting most of their strategic warheads and with the new MIRVed RS-24 hosting about half of their ICBM warheads this arm is fairly modern, and is the greatest threat to other nations by far.

How long will it take Russia to recover from this war? Like, even if Ukraine completely gave up and allowed Russia to occupy the entire country today, it seems like Russia would still be in a worse situation then when the war started

      Anonymous

Some things just likely won't be recoverable. The collapse of their arms exports won't be solved any time soon because they will need to spend decades replacing domestic equipment losses, their petro infrastructure is overwhelmingly designed around shipping product west to Europe and those markets are largely closed off - and to make matters worse the Russian petro industry expansions into central Russia were largely designed and maintained by European engineering firms. No one in Russia or China has the tested and proven technical skillset to design, build, and maintain oil infrastructure in the vast stretches of alternatingly frozen and muddy hellhole that would be needed to reach from Russia to China. On top of this the current Ukrainian strike campaign against refineries look to be aiming for components that Russia relied on German and Norwegian engineers to produce and maintain. Turkey has traditionally been on good terms with Ukraine very specifically to mediate Russian influence in the Black Sea so they will absolutely frick with Russian access to it long after the war is over. Sweden and Finland being in NATO is a huge problem for any actual confrontation, now NATO can easily shut down the single land access route to Murmansk in an instant AND pick and choose how they operate in the Baltic. In addition Russia has done long term reputational damage to their soft power in Central Asia and their CSTO project and Europe is finally admitting they are infested with Russian spies and saboteurs and fifth columnists, all of which took decades to plant.

Even ignoring the actual human losses the war has been very costly for Russia. There is a reason Putin crippled and gutted the oligarchs leading up to the war, they would be in open revolt right now if he hadn't brought them to heel.

        >Europe is finally admitting they are infested with Russian spies and saboteurs and fifth columnists, all of which took decades to plant.
The question is if they'll do something about it, though. We've (to include the US) been playing puss-games with enemies for too long. Fifth columnists should be deported (after all their liquid assets have been seized) and placed on no-fly lists. Spies should not be getting a couple of years in jail and a deportation, they should be tortured until they die for intelligence and their remains incinerated, with the government refusing to acknowledge they were ever arrested. When some homosexual from an organization like Rusich group shows up in a human country, he should only be "arrested" so he can "commit suicide in police custody." Treat enemies like enemies already.

Forgot to add that the US was the only one who warned Ukraine that Russia was going to invade, but Ukraine told them not spread information that isn't confirmed as it will cause panic. Look what happened. Even France told the US that Russia would not invade as Macron thought he & Putin were buddies for the most part. Hence, why the French & others like Germany disliked the US to a certain extent because they are included in things like the Five Eyes. Not even high ranking Russian military officials knew about the invasion until the last minute. The had a good idea, but it wasn't official until Putin gave the order. There is a reason why the US warned Ukraine - it was because the US & Five Eyes can penetrate the highest levels of inner circle communication in the Kremlin. The US's & Five Eyes spy satellite system is 10x better than every other country's combined.

Here's an article from 2018 describing Austria being a hub for Russian spies:
                https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-46228163

                And the more recent stuff:
                https://www.businessinsider.com/vienna-crawling-russian-spies-does-not-want-to-ban-them-2023-7
                >"Vienna is a perfect hub for spying, and always was," Gustav Gressel, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations and former Austrian military officer, told the Times. Austria has lax spy laws. You dont get into any trouble as long as you don't spy on Austrians or the austrian state. Even then the punishments are laughable. Deportation or five years jail time next to Josef Fritzl.
The more concerning thing are the big business and government connections the elite of Austria has. The far right party, that is going to win elections in fall, also drank the russian kool aid. Last time they were in power, they tried to allow russian cops to patrol Austrian streets and get russians in the federal academy (school for future Austrian IRS beraucrats). One of Austria's largest banks currently tries to get money out of Russia despite sanctions and the US OFAC is preparing throw out the bank of the dollar trade. One of Austria's largest and richest construction company, STRABAG, is also heavily entagled with Russia and allegedly built a lot of roads and parts of the crimean bridge.
Then you also have Oligarchs owning craploads of Villas south of Vienna. A close friend of mine lives there. The town is called Baden. If Budanov ever wanted to kill half the state duma and many of the Siloviki in one go, he'll just have to wait for the correct time of year. Putin himself has a big house in this town.

So yeah anon, saying Austria is infested wirh russian spies is kinda wrong. At this point Austria is a russian Oblast.

It gets worse the deeper you go. There are some mom and pop companies in Austria that produce machine parts that get exported to kasachstan.
Those specific machine parts are vital to produce new bmps and t90 tanks. And these companies are the only ones worldwide that are able to produce them at scale and acceptable quality.

Then you got the issue that everything the fire touched SHOULD be tested before use by xray to make sure that they can handle the pressures. I can bet that the ruskies will not do that. Then you gotta build the parts to replace it, the chinese maaaay be able to but no one else that sells to russia can fabricate these materials.

                Anonymous

Funny enough the 600,000 barrel estimate comes from Gunvor, which has Russian on it's board. JPMorgan said it's "at least" 900,000 barrels, with independent assessments putting it at 1.5 million.
The simple fact is Russia lost a lot of capacity very quickly, will not be able to simply fix it, and will likely continue to suffer currency depreciation, inflation, and persistently high interest levels due to a declining account balance.

We just moved from mass production of consumer commodities which any third-world country can do, to more advanced high-skill/high-knowledge production: Western factories build the factories that make everything else. There are specialised components that are hugely important for the functioning of the global economy that are only made by a handful of small businesses in Europe or the US.

Get cut off from the West economically and you won't die immediately but it will be a long, slow, and painful contraction into nothingness.

      >How long will it take Russia to recover from this war?
They won't. Russia's days of being a great power are over. Russia's days of successfully appearing to be a great power are over too, thanks to the war. At this point the question is really whether Russia finally accepts, gracefully, that they are not a great power anymore (as Britain, France, Japan, etc did) or whether they continue to cling to the delusion. The latter will be particularly ruinous for them.

The smartest thing Russia ever could have done was accept that they're not destined to be masters of Eurasia and integrate with Europe, where they could still be the largest swinging dick at the table while also benefiting from economic growth and reindustrialization. Instead they decided to go it alone and this is the result.

              Anglo superiority

Its about small advantages building into an overall one. It's cumulative Anon. F-16's alone wont change the air war. Its the combination of F-16s, and Patriots and Franken SAMs and all the other systems used well. And then that is unlikely to to totally defeat the Russians because they have so many bases deep within Russia. But even being able to just gain temporary air superiority over a small section of the battlefield for a day at a time can enable big changes on the ground. If the Ukrainian air force are able to support ground troops directly then they can do a lot to neutralize Russia's small drones at that time and place. That means you can remove mines without constantly getting bombarded and the tanks might be able to do their jobs. If you can get mechanized units past the hardened defenses then they will be able to do a lot of work very quickly. But this is all working in unison. Combined arms are complicated and hard.

More than likely with the border 'holed' by the Belgorod push its opened up a lot of avenues for teams to go in on the quiet and spike some shit.
The other more tangible benefit to this push is that all the fixed point ECM and jamming gear along the border got blown up by them on the way past. So its much easier to get drones into that region and then spread them out on the interior of Russia.

When something real happens Dvach /news/ gets flooded with Ukrainians trolling, and it’s usually preceded by threads about "explosions heard" or "AD fire seen" in such and such locations. The fact is if there’s nothing at all then it means it’s just a random fake pushed by some grifter and not even from a main Ukrainian propaganda source.

Funnily enough, Lithuania is older than Russia itself.
Confederation of Lithuania formed earlier than duchy of Moscow.
And Russia stole Russian name from Lithuanians, since according to legal succession Lithuanians were rightful rulers of Ruthenians and Kyiv. Muscovy had 0 legitimacy when they made the claim of being ruler of Russians.

Belarus, formerly Ruthenia, is older than fricking Moscow. Funnily enough, they're technically Balts rather than Slavs, so they could claim a sort of historical union with Lithuania and that would result in a union state with two capitals: Minsk and Vilnius. Which is very improbable, but I'd like that because it'd piss off Vilnesians to no end.
            >I'm from Vilnius?

Minsk is a shit city unfit to be a capital, it's peak USR design tho.

Vilnius was built as a capital of the pseudo-empire, and it still would be cultural and political capital in proposed dual state.
Though knowing Lithuanians and their xenophobia towards slavs nowadays, they would only accept Belarus if they spoke Lithuanian and would be Catholic/Protestant, which is impossible.

We'll see how it goes for them when Russia starts getting serious fever shivers and Luka is left without backup from Moscow. Honestly, before all of this bullshit we were fine with Russians, but now if you meet a Russian from Russia you automatically quiz him if he's a vatnik or not. Any inclination towards "Z" shit and you keep them at double the arms length and keep it kurt. Even local vatniks have gotten tamer after Kherson retreat. Only reason we were ever pissed off at contemporary Russians was because they allowed that fake-heel wearing prick to frick up their country without growing a pair and molotoving cops until they run away and Putin flies to frickknowswhere after shitting his diaper from fear of getting cornered by pissed off Russian citizens. Poland started LARPing as ruler of teh Rvs at the same time, the only difference is Lithuanians got buckbroken and outnumbered by the local Rus nobility, so laws were written in the local language and even some kangz were Rus

              >LARPing as ruler of teh Rvs
Ruler of what? The Rus went up to "make" Moscow and that was that.
              >Lithuanians got buckbroken and outnumbered by the local Rus nobility
Poles and Lithuanians pretending to be Poles ain't Rus nobility. There is, in fact, no Rus nobility. It was either Swedes or Krauts. Hell, even Brits. Rus nobility has never ever been a thing. Maybe except Tsar Rurik, who was a hopped up Norg slave trader. Noble as frick, right?
              >kangz were Rus thats why to this day some schizoid belarusian nationalists say they're the real lithuanians
What Kangz you on about? Jagellio (not to be confused with an ICP fan) or Mindaugas (demo monarch) that never happened again? As for schizoid belarusian nationalists it's just selective nitpicking to come up with a fan-fic version of history. Lithuanian or Polish nationalists are the same type of schizoid. F-16s aren't wunderwaffe. They give Ukraine options. But they aren't going to turn the tide of the war. However I would expect them to pull off some pretty cheeky plays with them. Killing A-50s has been a deliberate shaping operation to break Russia's AEW coverage. With that, there's more room for Ukraine to operate their aircraft and perform other missions like SEAD. If you can start to break up Russian air defense then you can begin to use your air force offensively and support ground operations.

        Anonymous

        >They aren't going to turn the tide

That seems like it would turn the tide.

          Anonymous

Who will give them enough f16 to gain air superiority? It's not like they're alien tech that can do anything and be completely invincible. They're good jets (though somewhat old by now) but they're not magic

          Anonymous

            Anonymous

You are talking like Ukraine is planning to attack inside russian territory. Ukraine want to gain air superiority inside their borders, destroy radar posts and artillery, also using long range missiles to hit bombers in russian airspace from inside Ukraine. This will allow ground force to advance, pushing EAST and SOUTH, consolidate, reinforce, rinse and repeat.

      Anonymous

I don't think anybody knows. I doubt they'd be the wunderwaffe many think since I doubt they're getting them in high numbers.

The main outcome is going to be increased degradation of Russian IADS, at least for a while.

The amusing part is that in both presumed cases, one being to make Russia into a superpower and a great geopolitical player again OR the other where it's just about making himself and his oligarchs rich Putin has failed. And he has failed catastrophically. No matter the outcome of the war Russia is filtered out of equations both in the West and the East. If anything it made the West stronger, especially Europe with all the rearmament and diversification of energy sources and so on, while in the East Russia is wholly dependent on Chinese and North Korean mercy. It's a total collapse of their influence, power, prestige and tech.

Putin is the best thing that happened to Europe and Trump will (hopefully) accelerate the readjustment of our societies and politics through his own brand of idiocy. We need that moron in the White house so that Europe gets another kick in the ass to go deeper into reassuming its rightful place under the sun, with more force and steel to back it up.

If this isn't the kick they needed then we have to take it upon ourselves to start badgering the everliving frick out of our own governments to finally start talking to eachother about shit that NEEDS to be concrete and non-negotiable. Failing to plan is planing to fail and this is the shit they have to get through their lazy, thick skulls, but it's not some fake-tan bozo boning his own country that's supposed to make them realize that they have to have a plan A, plan B and a plan C when there's funding available. I fricking adore the Finns because they have the proper mentality of knowing that shit might go from Walk in the Park to Defcon 1 in a tick-picking minute. Sitting around and scratching their c**ts is not how you get ready for a fricking crisis. You got no plan, you got no reserves, your allies got no plan or reserves, you don't communicate? You. Are. >That’s the real-world adult geopolitical and economic factors at play
    Lol

There are two critically important factors you didn't cover, one political, one economic:
    1) Putin is partly but a figurehead for his cabal of oligarchs. All leaders are held up by a number of "barons" who all hold some power to dethrone him if necessary, and he has to take their considerations into account and well, not just his personal gain.

    2) Oil and gas only makes up a third of Russian state revenues. TAXES makes up the majority, as it is for most countries. Invading Ukraine would have grown the Russian economy and taxpayer base by a third again, and that's the real money maker.

      >Putin is partly but a figurehead for his cabal of oligarchs.
this hasn't been true in years, he's been thinning out his opponents for decades and at this point he's the actual leading oligarch of the cabal itself

"MOSCOW, Feb 23 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that 95% of Russia's strategic nuclear forces had been modernised and that the Air Force had just taken delivery of four new supersonic nuclear-capable bombers.
Putin made the comments in a recorded speech to mark Russia's annual Defender of the Fatherland Day, which celebrates the armed forces, a day after he flew on a modernised Tu-160M nuclear-capable strategic bomber.
On the eve of the second anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, the Russian leader praised soldiers fighting there in what he called a "special military operation", hailing them as heroes battling for "truth and justice."

Yeah. Russian military personnel posted footage from a "secret military air base" and uploaded it online for you to see.

Here's some good footage. But you're not gonna watch it. You're gonna b***h that there's no footage from the russian MoD about their fricked up airbase. You don't like good footage. Hell, if there was good footage you'd either disappear like the pungent fart of a worm infested anus you are or b***h about how it was doctored or outright faked because you are here to stir shit. I'd say "Frick you" but you're already plenty fricked. Only good thing about braindead fricks like you is that you die without regrets, because you are empty fricking people. If Spooky Buddy Budanov has anything to do with it, which it's almost certain that he does, we'll get some info two days after the fact. But that shit will be official. Meanwhile we can only have sketchy shit and hoping OSINTgays come through somehow.

It can take some time for it to appear, either on sat image or random dirtbags with a phone camera to get an idea. There's nothing really firm apart from three fricking huge explosions there and a lot of ground AA fire with AK's it sounded like.
Just speculating on 'how big' those explosions were, whatever they're packing into those drones was at least the explosive yield of heavy artillery shells.
