They are not more obsolete now than they were in WWII, especially in asymmetrical warfare.
Even in a regular war, like 'kraine, they are supposed to be dropped in the back of the enemy line just before an assault to prevent all logistical move and delay the coming of the second line.

Obviously dropping them deep in enemy territory without preparation or support is just sending them straight to the internment camp. But Russians don't believe in strategy it appear.

it's unhealthy to be this fixated and bitter about Russian victories in a war that doesn't involve you. until Ukraine has occupied more land than Russia, there isn't a discussion to be had about Russian failure. To say otherwise is immoral, as every dead uki is an innocent life saved. This is on top of the fact that /k/ is and always has been a pro-Russian board, so gtfo newbies

Go back into the archive and read a few tank, plane, and ship threads and try to say that /k/ is unilaterally pro-Russian with a straight face.
/k/ has always been at best a random assortment of autistic fricks arguing about shit that doesn't matter for fun.
Historically dispersed by the few magical moments where everyone comes together and just gets along and it's great, despite being short-lived.
Now it's just you fricking election and war tourists shitting up the board 24/7 or doomer/zoomer c**ts who think being depressed and vicious is a personality.

Pretty sure everyone is training their airborne forces for both. Jump badge to qualify then spend most of your time practicing walking to targets or getting out of helicopters.

WTF don't they use at least Para-wings or WTF they called, instead of dropping them like sacks of potatoes?

I know idiots who can do all sorts of shit with para-sail 'chute and it didn't take any big training. AFAIK you can do it on your 2nd jump and could be on 1st.

I went tow behind boat parasailing and it was shit easy and at end of ride you have slack line and pretty much do full self control. It was so easy it was almost boring and "exactly what I though it would be".

glide ratios from 3 to 9, depending on how fancy.

seems like dropping in middle of big field is asking to be BTFO and rekt.

SF do. But (for a number of reasons) the regular troops don't.
      -dont want to change
-dont want 3000 troops steering into each other
-doesnt matter because the only places they'd ever be used are large/open enough parawings don't give much benefit

The point is to get hundreds of men to the ground with +50kg of equipment each in the middle of the night and to do it all with minimal injuries

        Anonymous

And a para glider is massively superior....

          Anonymous

Paraglider can stall, crash and cause certain death if you don't fly correctly. Steerable chutes and gliders have advantages, but airborne ops are a one-way air assault from a fast flying aircraft onto literally any terrain, including terrains you could not land helicopters. Helicopters are slower than jets and paragliders are even slower.

Paraglider is also heavier than a chute with the same weight capacity.

Static line jumping is really just designed to cram the most dudes and equipment in the smallest possible drop zone. If everyone used steerable chutes they would collide with each other, get wrapped up, and be injured/killed.
Steerables are important for high jumps with a small team, but a LALO is static all the way baby.

They dont WANT the soldiers to be able to steer. They want the soldiers to land exactly where they were dropped, with as little glide time as possible.

How many knee replacements and disk fuses have my tax dollars had to pay for because the army thinks jumping out of planes is still cool in the 21st century? I bet the cost in dead marines eaten by Ospreys is cheaper.

You have to actually support and resupply them. Otherwise they're an isolated light infantry battalion. VDV did capture their objective, then when no help came.

Change my mind: Air Assault training should be part of basic training. Airborne is one thing, but these days so much stuff gets moved by helicopter that everyone should be familiar with it all.

      Anonymous

The real red pill is that Air Assault is a dumb school and should be disbanded. You don’t need 14 days to learn how to slide down a rope. We teach privates how to do that in about an afternoon.

Sling loading is useful and should be available as a course on every post, not just part of some gay school.

        Anonymous

A big part of the problem is the Army's badge/tab/special school culture. Courses that don't give you something to display on your uniform and show everybody how cool you are don't get nearly as much attention or acknowledgement. Air Assault has a whole division devoted to worshiping it to boot, so of course it can't just dissolve into the curriculum at BCT or become a course offered everywhere like hazmat handler or something.

Drop pods are being looked into for rapid supply, only a step away from 40k infantry ones with some rocket boost deceleration, or semi-glide ones from very low and fast.
