We did. And did an 8 year long "competition" to discover the best fighter on the market, turns out it's still the F-35.

no offense canada I dont think youd be allowed to buy anything else

god what a whole fricking mess that was.

american news outlets start generating cheap clicks over """f35 expensive""" so the geniuses at cbc's 5th Estate decide to jump on the bandwagon and put pierre sprey of all god-befricked people on to spout his bullshit.
Then, because election, the schmuck who is now our prime minister decides we can't buy the obvious choice as a big campaign promise, trying to make hat out of "warmongering steven harper"
add in a dash of trade war because of US subsidies to Boeing making Bombardier's new jet less competitive.
Next thing you know we're buying clapped-out og f18s from australia while we waste time and money desperately trying to find a reason NOT to buy the f35.
Then, after alllllll that they can't find a single solitary justification to buy anything else and decide to put the order back in. So now we're at the back of the queue and have lost any and all contract bids to make parts for it.
Oh yeah, and now we have no pilots because they didn't train any new ones to fly our fleet of half century old garbage.

          Anonymous

We don't have trainers to train pilots now anyway so it's not like it matters lel.

i'd also argue spain should be in the potential category since there's no other option than the F-35B for a harrier replacement

China still has developing nation status in a lot of international organizations. It's what lets them play frick frick games with their exchange rates to make exports more competitive.

No you fricking moron third world means aligned with neither the Soviet Union nor the United States. I don't see China shining Uncle Sam's shoes and Chang is looking at Russia like a nice juicy steak right now. Honestly "third world" could stand to have a bit of a definition update because in all likelihood China will eventually have its own sphere of influence including shithole states that can't get western gibs and are too stupid to realize the Chinese are worthless as overlords.

Poland doesn't have any. Supposed to be getting F-35's this year, but there's the delay with TR-3 and Block 4.

      Anonymous

Why are there so many delays with the F-35? Is just anything 5-th gen just really hard to make?

        Anonymous

TR-3 and Block 4 is a catch all term for some 100 upgrades including improved sensors, completely new missiles systems (and making it so older missiles are operable on the F-35), E-Warfare, maintenance etc etc, also hardware improvements

Seems like this tech really needs another 5 years in the oven before it can be used against each other

        Anonymous

Well, yes, they really are hard to make. But a big part of the problem is the absolute clusterfrick of different companies and countries all making one component or another and shipping them all over the world to get assembled in different places at various stages of production. It’s an extremely moronic concept that was concocted when the establishment thought nothing would ever threaten the US again, and while they’ve been making some efforts to untangle it in recent years it’s just deeply fricked on a fundamental level. Lots of software problems too (mostly solved now, but it’s been a very long time coming) for similar reasons, LockMart sold the DoD on an idea where they would start production before the software was ready and then deliver it in patches, for efficiency. Shockingly the plan of “start shipping products before they’re done and figure it out later” did not, in fact, turn out to be efficient.

        Anonymous

Other than the initial procurement snafu, software has been the F-35's biggest problem. Software takes enormous amounts of skilled man-hours to develop and test (at least, if you want to make sure it doesn't crash the plane). Sensor fusion and lots of wienerpit automation make for some massive amounts of code.

Nobody ever budgets enough time or money for it, either.

Why 210? Why not 200? Seems like data manipulation.

Why not just write 211+? It's functionally the same.
