Now, that the dust has settled(mostly), was Iraq a success? Should we have ever gone in the first place? What would you do different if you were in Bremer's position?

Being a neverserved, I like hearing vet stories from /k/ about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That's why I made this thread.
Also, what would you say the proper way to deal with Saddam would have been? And what mistakes did the US makes militarily?

        >Also, what would you say the proper way to deal with Saddam would have been?

Why do you feel like you needed to deal with him in any way?

desu, if it was me in Bush's place, I probably wouldn't have started any wars. Not even Afghanistan. Just a few surgical strikes to deal with UBL and AQ's top leadership but no war.
But, I'm asking in the context of Bush already making up his mind.

The public would have had Bush's head in the 2nd term election, if he hadn't done something big and bold as a response to 9/11, though his decision to stick around and try to nation build instead of just fricking everyone up and leaving like we did during the first Gulf War might have been a mistake that every subsequent president doubled down on because they didn't want to be the guy to admit that it was never going to work until the voter base threw the metaphorical rock through the establishment's window that was Trump.

Yeah, the Iraq war was a response to 9/11, despite Iraq having absolutely nothing to do with it. People were baying for blood and wanted a war, any war. And luckily, Bush wanted to finish what his father started. Join those together and now you have an unholy confluence of interests that resulted in the Iraq war.

I'm sure the public would be pacified with Osama's head and a few dead Al Qaeda. Taliban offered to put him on trial iirc which the US declined. I'm sure something like that could be worked out with the Taliban.

Saddam was supported by western governments, including shipping him chemicals and know-how to make WMD's in with which he gassed the Kurds the first place lol. They also supported him in the war in Iran.

Then he invaded Kuwait and everyone started pretending he was the bad guy all of a sudden

Never go anywhere uninvited, unless they attacked you directly. Learn that lesson.

        Afghanistan didn't attack you.
Basically America should focus on the countries that welcome it. Like Taiwan, SK, Ukraine, Poland, Baltics. People there appreciate your support, so stick to them and avoid the buttholes who hate you.

What would your response be after 9/11 occured? Should've atleast invaded Saudi Arabia.

To be a success there needed to be an goal in the first place. Beyond feeding the MIC. The stated aim of the invasion was to stop a WMD program that never existed.

The main issue with reconstitution was that they didn't have a plan for how to fix Iraqi's economy which as well as being looted and set on fire was a soviet style centrally planned socialist economy that was completely unrecoverable and noone could decide exactly how to go about making it capitalist. Allegedly at one of the exclusive mutual wank sessions for only Bremner and the coalition governors when the governor of Maysan asked him what the plan was to fix the economy he said "it's not our job to fix the iraqi economy".

Then he wondered why there were so many insurgents when the country had like 50% unemployment and food rationing until a few years ago.

    >was Iraq a success?
As concession to Britbong geopolitical/economic factors toward the end of the Cold War and thereafter, possibly, and in anticipation of the false liberalization in China to go the way it has (together with Russia) along with the Belt & Road. Afghans have world class guerillas sitting smack dab in the middle of those designs, and next to Iran, sandwiched by Turkey thanks to decades straight of practical experience fighting first rate militaries. Then again people like Netanyahu shot calling an event on the scale of 9/11 to induce just the sort of dual citizen geopolitical double dealing skimming any fat off of it was never advisable, and if the gamble paid off, the 'Collective West' would be a limp dick in the hands of reactivated Cold War enemy Eurasian block, with armies and strategic missile stockpiles only fit for fighting insurgents.

Iraq worked out OK for now. People b***h and moan because they want a second vietnam but the country at least exists as a democracy on paper and can defend itself. It also got the rest of the middle east to start cracking down on terrorists within their borders out of fear that the US would make up an excuse to invade them.

In the first Gulf War, large portion of the iraqi military was destroyed. Even soviet supplied relatively new and modern warplanes were either sent to Iran or buried in the desert for not getting completely destroyed. After the first gulf war Saddam was left with only enough force to provide internal security, and he was kept bent with sanctions until 2003. That's why United States had low casualities and captured bagdat in very short time period. Tens of thousands of iraqi children died from malnutrion between 1991-2003 because of US imposed sanctions.

Was Iraq a success? Yes. We have a permanent little colony there called the Green Zone. Everytime the Mullahs send their militant boys to frick around, they find out and we return them in pieces charred and shredded. Saddam Hussein was a pompous fat homosexual who bragged about "winning" the 1st Gulf War so we made sure he knew what losing tastes like and he was hanged like the dog he was
