basically when you buy a gun here you're supposed to drop off this card they give you with the local police department. They look like this: https://www.michigan.gov/-/media/Project/Websites/msp/forms/RI060.pdf If you're doing a private sale you still have to do one of these. Has to be turned in within 10 days. The problem is that there is conflicting information about how to register self-made firearms since they don't have serial numbers. The risk is a $200 civil fee and confiscation of the contraband versus potentially "lying" on the form and getting a felony or $2000 fee. So, in either case it's probably safer to not register them.
Since it's likely that people from other states bring firearms here to use them, they built an exeption from registration of pitols into the law meant for people vacationing here or whatever (180 day limit on that).
The real exception is that if you have an out-of-state concealed carry license for any other state you're exempt from ever registering them, even if you live here. So even if all states I planned on being in had constitutional carry, I'd still get the license.
I lived there for a few years. When I first moved there, I took my guns to the station and they wrote down all the serial #'s. That was it. Kinda dumb, but it was painless.

There are a couple of countries in europe where you can carry although sadly I don't live in one of those countries. You can concealed carry in at least Estonia, the Czech Republic and Austria as far as I remember and mayber a couple of others. We have constitutional carry in our state, but you can still get a concealed carry permit for reciprocity and to skip background checks when buying new firearms. I guess the way those work is the gun shop just accepts that you will pass your check with the honor system and gives you your gun and then runs the checks all at the end of the day.

Florida has a wait period so even with constitutional carry you want the license and I found private sellers commonly would not sell to me without a license.

Maybe the gun he has isn't safe to carry with a loaded chamber, like original Tokarev pistols, or some Saturday Night Specials. If that's the kind of gun you have, carrying a loaded magazine with an empty chamber would still let you have a loaded weapon on your person without the risk of an accidental discharge if you trip or get hit by a car. You'd have to practice racking on the draw, of course, but it would work.
Naturally, there's not much point to this practice if your gun isn't outright unsafe like that.
