        Yes.
And since it is notably harder to stabilize a medium caliber gun on a wheeled vehicle than on a tracked one, because of ground pressure and all that, one may wonder how is it possible two of the best companies in the world can't integrate the CTAS 40 on tracked vehicles while Nexter can on the 25 tonnes Jaguar.

        Absolute garbage.

Scrap Ajax, CTA the Warrior as a stop gap, Buy the Lynx. Fixed.

        >CTA the Warrior as a stop gap
Anon? Are you aware that was the original plan but Lockheed Martin weren't capable of integrating the CT gun onto the warrior either, just like GDLS UK weren't able to do so on the Ajax?
Of course both of these guys blamed the gun because reasons.
By the way they won that battle already since brits will go with both 40 Bofors and 40x180mm, even if KMW were pushing hard for a CTC40-equiped Boxer with the support of Nexter. A Boxer which already equips the british forces.

        But what about France? Well:
        Nexter:
        3 turret designs developed
        >https://www.nexter-group.fr/sites/default/files/fichiers-catalogue-produit/40%20CTA_0.pdf
Of which 2 are offered as commercial products:
manned on the Jaguar, derivative of the T40:
unmanned, derivative of the Toutatis turret:
        Thalès:
2 variants of the same turret developed:
        land-based rapidfire:
        naval rapidfire:

Funny how the same exact gun works successfully in French hands (including a navalised version, IIRC), but fails completely in British hands.

        >Funny how the same exact gun works successfully in French hands (including a navalised version, IIRC), but fails completely in British hands.
That is indeed the most strange story anon.
A 40CTA turret was also installed onto the Patria AMV, pic related.
Nexter/KMW could have worked on a Boxer 40CT solution, brits refused.

The gun itself is fine, the problem comes with the integration between it and the rest of the vehicle. France sees it as a closed system as far as I could understand it, while the UK wanted a different kind of ammo and subsystems which don't mesh well with the gun.

What could be the cause of vibration and noise problems? Are we talking about a fundamental design flaw rather than a glitch?

      Anonymous

They are trying to fix the problem for over two years now

      62. Noise and vibration in the Ajax family of vehicles have both electrical and mechanical origins from the following broad sources:

      (a) Track, suspension and running gear, in particular the tension and sprocket design/track interface.

      (b) Engine and its mounting into the vehicle.

      (c) Quality issues associated with, but not limited to, inconsistent routing of cabling, lack of bonding and weld quality; all of which can lead to potential electromagnetic compatibility issues with communication equipment. As witnessed during trials, insecure components and bolting within the vehicle can also lead to noise and vibration, and again this was noted by ATDU crews.

Jesus. I thought problems like this would be obviated by good basic engineering design and experience. Humans have been making tracked vehicles for a century.

Its the issue with bending over for another company. Could have just had BAE roll out CV90 at their UK holdings with no issues since they are a proven and competent platform but after the last contracts, they are in "nowaygay" town so we went with the Ajax/ASCOD which GDLS went full israelite on and didn't bother to test.
We should just honestly sue GDLS for being turbogays, give BAE the cash and holdings and just go with the current top end CV90s in every facet, including the 40mm BOFORs etc.
That or just give Rheinmetall a bunch more money to make Boxers and just accept we will operate 1 vehicle platform for 99% of the roles in our military and just get 100% production and maintenance ability.
Maybe sweeten the deal with a potential KF51 Panther blowjob as well unless BAE can make the CV90 Mk IV legitimately mindblowingly competitive.

      Anonymous

Ajax weighs about 20% more than the Griffon does. I imagine GDLS didn't bother to factor in the huge weight difference and skimped on the suspension etc by sharing it with the Griffon/ASCOD rather than upgrade it to deal with the extra 14 tonnes of tolerance needed for Scout SV.
Save a penny and it adds up etc.
BAE CV90 Mk IV looks better and better with every day. Especially since I'm sure we could scrap the trashfire thats CT40 in return for the 50mm Bushmaster.

Griffin and Ajax are both variants of the ASCOD but there's probably significant difference between the two despite the common lineage I hope. The Griffin II (MPF)/III (IFV) are almost 40 tons so in about the same range as the jax only IIRC the III could scale up to almost 50 tons. I really like the Griffin III and was shilling for it in another thread but the jax vibration problems made me nervous. So I guess we will see.

      Anonymous

MPF make me irrationally angry. It's a lightly armored 105 that's bigger than an Abrams. Still using manual loader in TYOOL 2022. I have no idea what the army saw in this over AGS.

        Anonymous

Agree. IBCT's definitely needed a direct fire cannon so it's better than nothing but they easily could have gotten something better. Honestly they should have done a m256/xm360 in a low profile unmanned turret + bustle autoloader and 3 men in the hull. It would have been more expensive though. Pretty sure they did this thing the way they did for the cost savings.

no reason they can't upgrade it later.

        Anonymous

It's a very conservative design. But then again, they were the only competitor left after BAE got disqualified with their XM8 for missing deadlines.
I don't know how they are going to do logistics on it. IBCT has no organic wreckers that can deal with the MPFs weight of 38 tons, so they will have to scrounge some M88s from somewhere

Can someone give me a QRD on this and the possible alternatives?

Is this the supposed warrior replacement? But it's far too heavy for its suspension/chassis so fricks it all up and is hence way delayed and overbudget?

Why not just go to BAE and build nice modern CV90s with the latest and greatest upgrades in the UK to keep all that money in the country. I don't know much about IFVs but there must be plenty of comparable ones to choose from (Redback/CV90/Boxer/Puma/whatever is replacing the Bradley/Patria/Lynx/Ascod) that could easily be customised to meet their criteria and not suck up vast quantities of time and cash and never get any export success.

      Anonymous

      >But it's far too heavy for its suspension/chassis so fricks it all up and is hence way delayed and overbudget
The vibrations are so bad they damage the internal electronics and fricked the gun stability in addition to physically injuring the passengers and giving them tinnitus. They'd be lucky to only have the issues were being over budget and/or delayed lol. The thing itself is fricked.
They might be able to go back and see if BAE is still willing to produce them in the UK, pretty sure after the ajax was selected they offered to move production from Sweden to try and clinch the contract. If not then the American Griffin III may be an option later on, its developed from the ASCOD same as ajax but doesn't suffer from the vibrations to my knowledge and being a similar chassis might be easier to integrate their meme 40mm cannon on.
