    That's the point, you don't.
If you are already stuck in the kill zone you are fucked.
The enemy has to be extremely incompetent for a well planned ambush to fail.

Hope that you have at least some sort of terrain to hide behind. Establish a base of fire and maneuver to a point where you can either egress or force parts of the L to either fire in the general direction of their comrades or stop shooting to shift their positions. That's really about it. All other options involve hunkering down and hoping your artillery is REALLY good at danger close.

You have to push through it, because you usually don't have good cover available since you're already being flanked.

Retreating is only an option if they initiated the ambush too early.

Mass and recoil, I think. Go watch a video of a mk19 firing the HV variety and watch how much it shakes that fucking chassis.

I donwant to talk to someone who got to shoot a m397 to know if those work worth a shit. Or especially a xm1060. Because if those actually work? Whew.

Because 40mm is big enough to kill everybody in the room and smaller grenades mean you can carry more of them.

Yeah but the wimpy explosive charge makes it ineffective at blowing apart walls or other hard cover.

The current 40mm handfired guns don't have any real recoil-absorbing stuff like springs or buffers. People shoulderfire .50BMG without too much difficulty. Something like that or 700 nitro has much more momentum than a low velocity 40 mm.

I suppose it's possible but other anon is right, the requirement isn't there. I just felt that if 6 wimpy grenades in quick succesion is good, then surely a big grenade that can blow apart walls and cover is better.

            >blowing apart walls or other hard cover
I assume that's why they have been working on thermobaric grenades.

            > People shoulderfire .50BMG
Yeah, but the HV versions of 40mm quadruple the velocity of the rounds, so you"re going from half the momentum of .50 bmg to 2x as much.

But even then, each 40mm is half a pound. So six rounds of 40mm is the same weight as 90 rounds of 5.56 in loaded mags. Fuck that shit. You have to _really_ want that indirect fire at that point.

            Anonymous

Grenades don't "blow apart" anything, unless you sit on it maybe. They poke little holes with their weak shaped charges about the diameter and length of a icepick.

I argued this two years ago on this board, but was laughed at. Infantry squads should focus on grenadiers and automatic riflemen for maximum suppression. PDWs for the grenadiers, anti-tank weapons can be deployed at the platoon or company level. Anti-drone weapons will also need to be considered.

Right angles are tough. IN THEORY you can attack left and create a second right angle to ruin their day too. In practice that requires knowing the ambush is L-shaped.

More importantly the attempt causes your lines to flatten out so rear units are no longer blocking the retreat of front units.

They should be numerically weaker where ever you're pushing through.

Also it's better to be literally anywhere other than the kill zone of an enemy ambush and a lot of times you can't get there by retreating, especially if they chose their ambush site well.

And if its a trained ambush you can bet your ass that there is either mortar or artillery shooting at your basis to prevent falling back and another predetermined firing spot on top of you to help ambushers escape.

If possible, get your squad off the line and form up on the the upper right (your behind and to the left if you're the one getting ambushed) along the y axis. Realistically, your best option is to lay down as much fire as you can while getting the absolute fuck out of there and call for support like anyone with a brain.

That's a lot of hoping and praying. Good way to get you and other people killed if you're wrong.

"In theory" is the key phrase. Hard telling what kind of bush you're walking into, especially when all hell breaks loose. You're almost always better off laying down as much firepower as you can while you attempt to pull back.

Getting out of there vehicles and engaging in a dick measuring contest with a couple hundred ISIS Militants instead of just speeding off the second they began to take fire.

Then the only two survivors decide "now's a good time to run" befote abandoning their vehicles and just trying to run with no cover or concealment, they are subsequently cut down.

Military Anons, if you ever find yourself in this situation, please don't try to act like a hero. Retreating and surviving is better than being killed and having your go-pro's recording of the last moments of your life get cut up and turned into Propaganda.

ive always been wondering, was the car stuck or disabled? i mean they seemed to have a very good idea where the fire was coming from. it shouldve been pretty obvious that the car is not enough cover to get away far enough before the enemy can see you again, terrain is flat all around
if the car still worked it wouldve offered much better chances of retreating

I'm pretty sure they had multiple vehicles, so I highly doubt they were all stuck, and they were using them as mobile cover in the video's. I guess the shock of having two of their buddies being killed along with like 5 Nigerian soldiers was too much and they made dumb decisions.

They got abandoned by the entire Nigerian force they were embedded in. Some of these guys weren't even SF they were just conventional Army embedded with SF. They couldn't simply run away, their vic would have been annihilated even worse than it was. They truly had no option here. War and life is like that sometimes, not that I'd expect a brainlet 14 yo retard on PrepHole to know that.

Why stop and fight at all? Why didn't they just immediately speed off, set up position in an easier to defend position, and try to figure out what they're dealing with. All I saw was a couple mutts and a few Dindu's being way too cocky and getting obliterated because of it.

Brainless response. It's flat, even terrain. There's literally no where to run. No position to take. The Nigerian forces only escaped because they weren't the target, the embedded US forces were. Using the vic for cover was their only real option, they would have never escaped. Not only that but they were not expecting the Nigerians to pussy out and run away. If anything you cna only fault them in their overconfidence in their African allies.

You don't. You maintain dispersion on the march to ensure that a minimal amount of troops are caught in the killzone; there's a reserve outside of it capable of attacking the ambushing enemy.
Troops in the killzone attempt to continue forward or retreat out of the killzone at speed. If the route is blocked, e.g. lead and trailing vehicles blown up or impossible, they attempt to assault through the enemy instead.

    tactical retreat
    1. two guys remain to lay down suppresive fire, while everyone else retreats
    2. the second step is for the retreating troops to lay down suppressive fire for the two troops to retreat
    3. call in mortar fire
the better the troops are trained, the better this is pulled off

If only there were some easily accessible materials out there which cover this sort of thing, like I don't know field manuals or something.

SOP is you get behind cover, return fire, respond with HE(handheld grenades for near side, 40mms for far), counter assault, and destroy the enemy.

You have to have lots of rockets or recoilless rifles(i.e. Gustavs) and belt fed machine guns to gain fire superiority but the odds of surviving such an ambush are very low without armored vehicles(at LEAST up armored humvees with 50 cals or maybe even an M134 or a GAU19b(these were seen on some American vehicles in Iraq), it's much better to have MRAP or Strykers or something.

But odds are you just die and so do your friends.

Like grenade launchers and miniguns and mortars type heavy weapons, and the ammo to feed them. If you're surrounded you're going to need better tools than the other guys unless you're just really skilled, I wouldn't risk it.
